RE: [IMail Forum] 150K mailing list

2004-08-30 Thread Vince Iannelli
If it was inappropriate an inappropriate question, I think that you would have heard
more than silence...

I would think that to avoid getting blacklisted, then you have to make sure this isn't
spam, as the volume itself shouldn't cause any problems if it is going to legit
subscribers/customers. 150K is a big list though. Are they a large enough site so that
it makes sense that they could generate a list that big? Do you see any mention of
them or previous incarnations of their companies in any of the spam blacklists?

Have you previewed the message that they are going to send out?

We're about to have a client that has a mailing list with 150K users on it.
I've checked their database and these appear to all be previous customers of
theirs. The concern I have is will we run the risk of getting blacklisted
sending out their newsletter and how could we avoid that?

Thanks in advance,

Bill

[IMail Forum] IMail Forum] mail::sendmail and Imail problem

2004-08-17 Thread Vince Iannelli
I use the mail::sendmail perl module on my windows 2003 server to send mail from my
cgi scripts through Imail.

It has worked great for months, but all of a sudden I am not able to send mail to most
external domains.

For example, when trying to go to my @mac.com address, I get the error (from the
script):

550 not local host mac.com, not a gateway

And no error or log makes it into the Imail sys logs...

I can send mail directly from Imail webmail to these addresses and if I have the cgi
scripts use the Imail1.exe application.

And I can use mail::sendmail to send email to addresses in my own domain.

Any ideas why this would stop working or where to look? Could it be an Imail problem
(I'm guessing not, but I don't know what else to do).

Thanks for any ideas or tips on getting this working again.

RE: [IMail Forum] mail::sendmail and Imail problem

2004-08-17 Thread Vince Iannelli
I did just bind some new IP addresses to the server, so maybe that is the problem (I
can't remember if I did that after this problem started or just before :- )...

The IP of the server didn't change though, and that was already on the list of trusted
IP addresses in Imail, so I wouldn't think that could cause a problem...

I added them all and restarted, so will see what happens.

Thanks for the suggestion.

From what I've seen, the not local host... not a gateway error
 has to do

RE: [IMail Forum] mail::sendmail and Imail problem

2004-08-17 Thread Vince Iannelli
That didn't work...

Looking at my Imail server logs, I get this for example:

08:12 04:50 SMTPD(3d4a7c8500a62cd3) [216.122.xxx.xxx] connect 216.122.xxx.xxx port 2779

Unfortunately, 216.122.xxx.xxx is not the IP for my imail.mydomain.com. It is instead
one of the new IP addresses I had to bind to the server.

The server logs from before the problem started have the real IP address for my mail
server in them.

Any ideas on where I screwed up here? Again, I'm on a Windows 2003 server.

Thanks

RE: [IMail Forum] mail::sendmail and Imail problem

2004-08-17 Thread Vince Iannelli
The 550 not local host error was from the script itself. These are from my imail
server logs.

And no, I don't have mac.com setup as a local domain.

And I got the same log entries for a ton of other domains I tried to send to that day.

I was thinking the error was in that IP address in the log being incorrect. It doesn't
match the one in my MX records for the mail server and is instead one of the new ones
I added to the server for some new websites I am creating...

Is the email address you are trying to send to spelled correctly?
Is mac.com setup as a local domain?

I am using IMail on a Windows 2003 server.

I noticed your comment 'be sure to turn of EDNS (Google)' and didn't really
understand what that means so am guess I haven't done it. I use Simple DNS on the same
server for my DNS. Is that an issue for me?

Gotcha's I need to be aware of?

We have been instructed to upgrade the NT4 box to the latest and
then make the move to the new box against a fresh install.

This is a good method which keeps the new server feelin' fresh.

However, the most important consideration with IMail and W2K3 is with
W2K3 DNS; if you are using W2K3 DNS (on localhost or elsewhere), you
must be sure to turn of EDNS (Google), or mail to many domains will
fail.
