2018-06-12 Thread Steven A. Falco
@lkundrak, the Fedora KiCad package admin, should pick up my -rc2 changes very
soon - they will go into Fedora Rawhide.

So we should be well positioned for a stable release to appear there soon after
everything is tagged for the official 5.0.0 release.

I'm not opposed to this as long as the risk of adding new bugs to the
P router is low. If not, I would rather wait until the first v5 point
release. @Tom or @Orson, do you have any input on this?

Re: [Kicad-developers] Stable release update.

2018-06-12 Thread John Beard
Hi Wayne,

Great news!

I have one suggestion for a currently-un-milestoned bug that I'd (partly
selfishly) really like to see fixed for v5:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/kicad/+bug/1518694

This is the one where you can't shift posture when routing to a pad in the
PNS router. It's certainly not a critical bug, and can be worked around by
routing "backwards". However, if it's an easy fix (I'm trying to find it,
but I don't know anything about the router code, so I have so far only
managed to add a ton of trace and confuse myself), it would be shame IMO to
leave it in for release. It's something that pretty much all users of the
PNS router would run into almost as soon as they try to use it. If it's a
harder fix or introduces unacceptably risky changes to the router, then it
can wait.

Cheers,

John

I should be able to get the Mac packaging release-candidate ready by
the middle of next week, which gives us more than a week of testing of
that version. I already have folks testing on it now.

Agreed. Given the nature of this issue it's not going to be fixed for
quite some time I think. It's silly to hold back the release for a very
long time because of it.

I think it Importance should be High and this bug should be fixed
before Release (I think maybe I'm wrong)

I've got it ready to go. I will go ahead an release it tomorrow.
Anyone have an issue with this? Package devs please note I had to
re-tag 4.0.3 to r6302 so if you built 4.0.3 prior to this revision,
please rebuild to the correct version. Sorry, there was a flurry of
last minute bug fixes that effected the stable branch.

I only need the update from the german translator for the
kicad-i18n,

the docs and libs have been tagged and uploaded now.

Thanks!

Then I will trigger a stable build as a release candidate in testing
for a sanity check. Poke Adam (OSX) and JS-reynaud (ubuntu PPA) if
they can do that too and we can publish the release note on the
 website.

I already have the announcement in my kicad-website-dev repo so I will

website

repo) the announcement.

Re: [Kicad-developers] Stable release update.

2016-08-06 Thread Nick Østergaard
Please note that you write that it does not contain a new snapshot of
the docs or libs, this is not the case. There is a new snapshot of the
docs, the stable banch supposed to match the stable kicad. It is
mostly improved translations.

Also the libs are updated. :)

do a pull request and merge (I think I have admin rights to the website

I vote for tagging, I don't think we will have much use of branching the
libs. When they are tagged on all repos we can easily fetch a consistent
package, and we can provide that as a download for those who wants that. I
can tag them if you want.

Re: [Kicad-developers] Stable release update.

2015-11-28 Thread Wayne Stambaugh
I would tag them. User's who get their footprints via the github plugin
are going to get the latest and greatest. This would only impact
packages that distribute the footprint libraries. Same goes for the
symbols and 3D model libraries. We may want to create a 4.0 archive of
the symbol and 3D model libraries for package builders to download.

The list I suggested:

If you package a stable package, where only the footprints are able to
be fetched "dynamically" it makes no sense. IMHO they should be
packaged by the packagers statically. Because the sch symbols are so
(and 3D models). Feel free to oppose my suggestion.

 It can

will be provided it requires some cleanup. I can make pull request to
remove some outdated libraries from fp-lib-table.

I'm being lazy which is why I asked for fp-lib-table.for-github to be
kept up to date. I have several custom fp-lib-tables that I use for
testing purposes. This is one of them. When I want to test the latest
github footprint library changes, I would rather not have regenerate it
every time with the fp-lib-table wizard to make sure I have the latest
and greatest fp-lib-table. For normal users, this probably isn't needed

Aah right, Google has guessed I needed the date for the latter more than
the former. :-P

It will be updating quite a good chunk of the symbols maybe up to half of

anything.

Yea! I wont have to go back and change all of the text sizes that
aren't 50mils every time I create a new schematic. It seems like all of
the op-amp and power symbols have a text size other than 50mils which I
use a lot. Thanks!

2015-08-04 Thread Carl Poirier
 I'd like this
https://github.com/KiCad/TO_SOT_Packages_SMD.pretty/issues/1 to be
merged. In a few words, it consists of merging some libraries dating back
from pre-github
era into two cleaner ones: TO_SOT_Packages_SMD.pretty and
TO_SOT_Packages_THT.pretty. Possibly
also renaming the _ThroughHole suffix to _THT for the other libraries.

Hi,

This is just to let you guys know that this has been merged. The
repositories to be deleted will be kept a while although they are marked as
deprecated. You should see no issue if you wait to update your
kicad-library and fp-lib-table.

Regards,

Carl

We are getting closer to the stable release branch. I am on vacation
from June 27th to July 5th so I will be making a big push to create a
stable release candidate branch on Lauchpad some time that week. I will
need some help to make that happen. Here are the main issues:

 Bugs:

 See

 https://bugs.launchpad.net/kicad/+bugs?field.searchtext=orderby=-importancesearch=Searchfield.status%3Alist=NEWfield.status%3Alist=CONFIRMEDfield.status%3Alist=TRIAGEDfield.status%3Alist=INPROGRESSfield.status%3Alist=INCOMPLETE_WITH_RESPONSEfield.status%3Alist=INCOMPLETE_WITHOUT_RESPONSEfield.importance%3Alist=CRITICALfield.importance%3Alist=HIGHassignee_option=anyfield.assignee=field.bug_reporter=field.bug_commenter=field.subscriber=field.structural_subscriber=field.tag=field.tags_combinator=ANYfield.has_cve.used=field.omit_dupes.used=field.omit_dupes=onfield.affects_me.used=field.has_patch.used=field.has_branches.used=field.has_branches=onfield.has_no_branches.used=field.has_no_branches=onfield.has_blueprints.used=field.has_blueprints=onfield.has_no_blueprints.used=field.has_no_blueprints=on

There are a few bugs in this list that probably shouldn't have a
critical or high severity. I've already commented on bugs that I
believe should have their severity changed. The rest need to be
addressed before the stable branch occurs. The one that is the most
disconcerting is the symbol library editor bug #1445848. If someone can
come up with a reliable method to reproduce this I would appreciate it.
I also think most of the GAL bugs in this list have already been
 addressed. Can someone please confirm?

 Documentation:

Is the documentation ready to be transferred to
https://github.com/KiCad? If not, what is left to do? At one point I
was waiting on Orson to merge the PS router documentation and Brian to
merge the CMake configuration code. Have both of these been completed?

Yes. Orson put the pns doc in the pcbnew doc and Brian's cmake stuff has
been merged. It can still be improved, but it will build html and pdf now.

Also, some of the grammar in our English documentation could use some
work. If you have the time please fix as much as possible before the
stable release. Every little bit makes a difference.

By the way, with the removal of cvpcb as a standalone exe, what should
we do about the document describing it? Should it be compressed a bit
more and put into the eeschema doc somehow?

The CvPcb documentation should at least be linked somewhere in the
Eeschema documentation if we don't want to merge it into the Eeschema
documentation. There may be some advantages to leaving it as a separate
document. In the future we may want to leverage CvPcb to assign
footprints in Pcbnew as well.

You can view its current form on http://docs.kicad-pcb.org/CvPcb/CvPcb.html

 Libraries:

If there are any last minute changes to the symbol, footprint, and/or 3D
model libraries, now is the time to get that done. We should probably
tag the library repos when we release the stable branch so the packagers
can pull the same libraries if the need be.

 Packages:

We will have to provide stable packages for windows, osx, and debian
based distros. Do we have an rpm distro package? If so, that would be
useful as well. I will add the stable source package to Launchpad for
package builders to download. I will also update the msys2/mingw
PKGBUILD file to download the stable source.

 Website:

There was a request to update the website with some new images for the
stable release which I think is a good idea. If anyone can make that
happen by the end of July, that would be awesome. It's not a show
stopper but it would be a nice touch.

 Stable branch:

Once the bugs above have been addressed, I will create a stable release
branch 4.0.0-rc1 on launchpad. This branch should be used to create
stable packages for testing. I would like a few weeks of calm before
the actual stable release is made to make sure we didn't miss anything.
Once the rc stable branch is created on launchpad, I will still place a
moratorium on new features being added to the product branch in order to
keep the focus on the stable branch until it's released. Once the
stable branch is release is official, I will open up the product branch
 for new feature development.

If there is anything I missed, please let me know and thank you to
everyone who has put forth the effort to make this happen.

 Cheers,

 Wayne

If you do this, someone will have to convert them back to AsciiDoc *by

The official documentation is now https://github.com/KiCad/kicad-doc.
Please do not make any changes to the legacy .odt documentation on
launchpad as it will surely get lost.

Hi,
OK, I'll start today by reviewing and editing the kiCad.adoc document

https://github.com/ciampix/kicad-doc/blob/master/src/KiCad/KiCad.adoc

I'll see how it goes with this first. Thanks.

sort of an extension of the made with kicad page.

It seems to me that everyone agrees on HackRF so I'll add VRML models
to that. If there are others that people will vote for I'll add them to my
 list.

I think for the IDF feature, the screenshot with the video board showing
both IDF and VRML will be enough. If we add a 'Gallery' page in the future
I can add a few more IDF models.

Hi,
Unfortunately I can just about log into Github. I have no idea how to
Fork,Edit and ask for a Pull. The simplest way I can contribute is to
download each of the existing HTML files, edit them is LibreOffice
4.4.3.2 and then send them to someone in a zip file as an attachment.
This is what I used to do with the edits of the original French open
office files a few years back. I'm afraid I will screw up the files on
Github so probably better for me to do it the old fashioned way. Who can
I send the edited files to?

If you do this, someone will have to convert them back to AsciiDoc *by
hand*. The AsciiDoc is the original source now. You'll have to learn

Actually with Github you can do all three from your web browser,
following those instructions:
https://help.github.com/articles/editing-files-in-another-user-s-repository/

Try on this document for instance:

 Libraries:

If there are any last minute changes to the symbol, footprint, and/or 3D
model libraries, now is the time to get that done. We should probably
tag the library repos when we release the stable branch so the packagers
can pull the same libraries if the need be.

I'd like this https://github.com/KiCad/TO_SOT_Packages_SMD.pretty/issues/1
to be merged. In a few words, it consists of merging some libraries dating
back from pre-github era into two cleaner ones: TO_SOT_Packages_SMD.pretty
and TO_SOT_Packages_THT.pretty. Possibly also renaming the _ThroughHole
suffix to _THT for the other libraries.

I think for the IDF feature, the screenshot with the video board showing

We are getting closer to the stable release branch. I am on vacation
from June 27th to July 5th so I will be making a big push to create a
stable release candidate branch on Lauchpad some time that week. I will
need some help to make that happen. Here are the main issues:

 Bugs:

 See

 https://bugs.launchpad.net/kicad/+bugs?field.searchtext=orderby=-importancesearch=Searchfield.status%3Alist=NEWfield.status%3Alist=CONFIRMEDfield.status%3Alist=TRIAGEDfield.status%3Alist=INPROGRESSfield.status%3Alist=INCOMPLETE_WITH_RESPONSEfield.status%3Alist=INCOMPLETE_WITHOUT_RESPONSEfield.importance%3Alist=CRITICALfield.importance%3Alist=HIGHassignee_option=anyfield.assignee=field.bug_reporter=field.bug_commenter=field.subscriber=field.structural_subscriber=field.tag=field.tags_combinator=ANYfield.has_cve.used=field.omit_dupes.used=field.omit_dupes=onfield.affects_me.used=field.has_patch.used=field.has_branches.used=field.has_branches=onfield.has_no_branches.used=field.has_no_branches=onfield.has_blueprints.used=field.has_blueprints=onfield.has_no_blueprints.used=field.has_no_blueprints=on

There are a few bugs in this list that probably shouldn't have a
critical or high severity. I've already commented on bugs that I
believe should have their severity changed. The rest need to be
addressed before the stable branch occurs. The one that is the most
disconcerting is the symbol library editor bug #1445848. If someone can
come up with a reliable method to reproduce this I would appreciate it.
I also think most of the GAL bugs in this list have already been
 addressed. Can someone please confirm?

 Documentation:

Is the documentation ready to be transferred to
https://github.com/KiCad? If not, what is left to do? At one point I
was waiting on Orson to merge the PS router documentation and Brian to
merge the CMake configuration code. Have both of these been completed?
Also, some of the grammar in our English documentation could use some
work. If you have the time please fix as much as possible before the
stable release. Every little bit makes a difference.

 Cheers,

 Wayne

Hi,

I don’t know how it fits together (I never get the direction of scripting
right… outside of KiCad or inside), but…
if sys.platform.startswith('darwin'):
for singlepath in sys.path:
if os.path.isdir( os.path.join( singlepath, 'scripting', 'plugins')
):
plugin_directories.append( os.path.join( singlepath,
'scripting', 'plugins') )
shouldn’t this be the same/similar as set in pcbnew?
// User scripting folder (~/Library/Application
Support/kicad/scripting/plugins)
pypath = GetOSXKicadUserDataDir() + wxT( /scripting/plugins );

// Machine scripting folder (/Library/Application
Support/kicad/scripting/plugins)
pypath += wxT( : ) + GetOSXKicadMachineDataDir() + wxT(
/scripting/plugins );

// Bundle scripting folder
(kicad.app/Contents/SharedSupport/scripting/plugins)
pypath += wxT( : ) + GetOSXKicadDataDir() + wxT( /scripting/plugins );
Instead of just using sys.path set somewhere else as base?

We need to go through the bug tracker and make sure we don't have any
known severe bugs which cause crashes and/or data loss that have not
been tagged fix committed and take the appropriate action. This number
will have to be zero before I will make the stable release. Obviously I
would like to get as many of non-critical bugs fixed as well.

What is the current status of the documentation and it's CMake build
configuration code? Are we far enough along that we can move the repo
to https://github.com/KiCad? I want all of the official KiCad repos
there for obvious reasons. We also need to get this set up soon so the
documentation for the new router features can be added which I'm
guessing will take awhile. I will give all of the necessary document
developers commit access to that repo once it is set up. I'm going to
let the doc developers handle the pull requests so I can keep my
involvement to a minimum. Also, what about nightly builds of the
documentation? We will need them as well.

I think we are in pretty good shape as far as nightly builds go for all
of the major platforms. Thanks to all of you who have worked tirelessly
on this. If we are missing anything in this regard, please help out if
you can so we can have as many bases covered as possible once the stable
 release is out.

Hopefully I can announce the feature freeze in the next few weeks so we
can start focusing on the stable release.

Thank you all for efforts. I hoping the next stable release of KiCad
will meet the needs of our users.

 Cheers,

 Wayne

2015-03-16 Thread Adam Wolf
Hi folks,

There is a debug night build of Python scripting on OS X, thanks to Collin.
I haven't switched it over because the scripting console is messed up. I
posted details on the list a few weeks ago, but here's the link.

http://downloads.kicad-pcb.org/osx/DEBUG/

If folks think I should switch it over to be the regular nightlies, I can
do that no problem.

Good timing! I just 5 minutes ago filed a pull request for the last two
chapters of the Pcbnew documentation, which I believe means all existing
(English) documentation is now in Asciidoc format.

Writing the array tool documentation is next on my docs list.

Excellent work! I'll have to clone the repo an see if I can get the
documentation to build. If we are this far along, we should be able to
get the GAL canvas, PS router, and diff/pair router documentation
merged into the Pcbnew manual before too long. Thank you doc devs for
all of your hard work.

Cheers,

Wayne

These are my suggestions for new features for this stable release or the
next, whatever you think is better.

* new documentation access in place

I mean, you know, the new documentation format is able to produce:

1) nationalized output
2) more than one format output: html, pdf, epub and more

Now the program use a pdf reader for consulting the documentation.
We can:

1) switch to html format for the default documentation format to be more
easily consulted (so no pdf reader but an html browser instead)

2) enable a fallback to let people do not install kicad doc package and
read the docs direcly on line

3) let the program switch the language docs automatically using the
program language preference (if I use the program in Italian I would
probably prefer to read the docs in Italian too)

4) in the future this switch will enable us to have even a context
sensitive help command in which a user will be able to open the user
(reference) manual directy in the page describing the command icon under
which the mouse pointer is in that moment. To make sure that this happens
the docs should be edited by inserting references to the right places.

* move the .po files from the docs tree to the main source tree

This to manage automatically during compilation process:

1) the production of the binary .mo files

2) update automatically the .po files from the sources without relying on
an external program (poedit) features and having to commit the binary .mo
files together with the source .po files

...

Bear in mind that I am not a programmer, and these are suggestions that I
am not able to do by myself. I really wish I were able to attach a patch
for this!

I can’t guarantee that I’ll be able to do anything, but I will try.

I have no Windows or Linux machines so if someone could provide me a Windows
binary of the trackpad branch maybe I can beg or borrow a box to at least
observe the behavior. I won’t have a Windows development environment so I’ll
just have to hope I can see something by inspection.
