Re: [lace] pinterest question
I was looking at this last night and the link was a yahoo one, which led to a photo album in which I couldn't even find the photo of the angels, or any connection to Sherry's website. I had found the photo by doing a search in Pinterest under 'bobbin lace angels' and the copy of Sherry's photo I found said where that person had pinned it from. Going to that person's boards, she has probably tens of thousands of pins (over 2000 on one of several marked as crochet!). There is only one board of 'lace' and the angels weren't on that, but she has several named generic things like 'handwork', 'handicrafts' and 'things I'd like to make' but as it was getting late and as she has so many things pinned it was hard to know where to start looking. I'm not sure quite how she uses her own pins as there are just so many, how does she re-find things that she was interested in enough to pin them. Or perhaps she spends so much time searching and saving, she never has time to look at them again :-) I am too new to Pinterest to know how to follow the trail back to the Celtic Dream Weaver website, but obviously somewhere along the way the link was broken. Is it possible that the photo was 'stolen' from Sherry's website and placed in someone's photo album, and then perhaps taken from there and posted in other places before it got as far as Pinterest? And it's in one of those moves that the link was lost? Jacquie in Lincolnshire. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Hi All I've just done the same thing and got back to a 'yahoo images search'. If the person in question has copied it from one of the 'images' pages on yahoo or google then it probably has been 'spidered' by them and the original site doesn't always show! However, as I have a page with 'lacefully elegant' in the title on Pinterest, I'll put your photo up there with your permission Sherry then it may just propogate round the world with a link back to your site! [lace] Long term Project finally finished
Clay has very kindly posted a picture of a lace edging that I started in a class with Jane Atkinson at Lace Convention in Bristol in 2005. I had changed the ground to Rose Ground and after I was turning the 3rd corner I noticed that Iâd done Torchon Ground just after the 2nd corner, so I started retro-lacing. Of course, Iâd taken out many of the pins by then so it took a while to replace the pins and work backwards. The pillow had been at my boyfriends apartment and the lace was only worked on when I was there. Finally it is done and I have my lovely cover cloths and pin cushion that Jacquie had embroidered with a spider and web are back home. When I saw my picture I spent about 20 minutes trying to see if I could find the link back to my website and couldn't find it. This pinterest to me is another way of taking other people's stuff and spreading it around to the point nobody owns it anymore. It reminds me of books that have been copied and put up on paciso. I can remember years ago even on this lists when people were so upset about their stuff being taken that pattern pages you had to get a password to get them. I guess nowadays anything goes. Now all this being said...I don't mind if someone likes my picture so much that they take it some where else but all pictures no matter where they are taken from should have where it came from right with the picture. Your edging is beautiful!! What an inspiration you are!! Clay I also looked in your folder and I love your Binche lace. I do love the look of Bunche lace. Maybe sometime if I have the opportunity to take a Beginner's class or able to get a book on begining Binche I will give it a whirl. Clay and so many other lacers including Tamara several ( who has been quiet on here too long) are all so inspirational. You probably know by now that I use Pinterest extensively as a links page for LaceNews, and it has been extremely effective in that regard. Pinterest does have a few that it will not allow, such as pins from facebook pages. No one has complained about any of the over 1000 pins, except once. And that came directly from Pinterest itself: We're getting in touch to let you know that we received a copyright complaint and have removed one (or more) of your pins. The complaint wasn't directed against you or your pin; it was directed against another user's pin of the same content. While many copyright owners are happy to have their content on Pinterest, we recognize that some do not want their content to appear on Pinterest, or did not receive attribution for the content. When a copyright owner sends us a complete notice per the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), it's our policy to remove these pin(s). Again, this complaint was not directed at you, or anything you did. We just thought you'd like to know why we removed your Pin. So your proper recourse is to send Pinterest a notice per the DMCA (and everyone who does anything on the internet should be familiar with this act). But you could also just write to the pinner and ask her to give you proper attribution. Pinterest is by no means a bad thing, although when I first heard about it I thought it was just another useless, self-aggrandizing social media site. It's actually the third largest one after Facebook and Twitter. It turns out to be exactly suited for simple advertisements, and wonderful for a link site. Sherry, I'm on Pinterest but I gather things only with the red Pin to repost on mine. Below each pin on a board you can write a comment, so I would go back to the offending page and make a comment that you are happy to see lace being spread around, but that they should say where the picture came from, and add your web address. My boards are simply there as a reminder to me for ideas and recipes with an easy way to re-find them when I need them. Usually they include the link back to the page I pinned them from and if they don't, I remove them as it is no good having just a photo and not the link for the recipe or pattern. Just pinned a neat idea to make a yarn swift using coat hangers. I have pinned a few lace ideas and it amazes me when I get emails telling me how many people around the world liked the idea. Re: [lace] Malvary's lace and clay
Sherry, thank you so much! Binche is a very demanding lace, and it is the one which continues to seduce me! If you're interested in learning Binche, I suggest that you start with Flanders Lace. There are two reasons for this... First, the threads used in Flanders are heavier and easier to see. Secondly, many of the basic stitches and rules are the same as in Binche, and when you feel comfortable with Flanders, then you can move to Binche with more confidence. Of course, finding a teacher is extremely helpful, but that can be expensive. [lace] pinterest question
When pinterest started a few years ago, people were pinning photos with no indication where they came from. A lot of people complained to pinterest, including me. At some point within the last year (I can't remember exactly when) pinterest changed its policy and how its software works. Now any and every pin gets posted with its source posted just below it. This happens automatically, without the pinner having to do anything to achieve this result. If a photo of mine or yours comes up on a google search, and you click on it, you get a little box which gives you the option of viewing just the full size image, naked without comment, or you can choose to view the web page the image is from. The web page is the source, such as your website or mine. Since pinterest made this change in how it functions my attitude towards them has changed, and I find it quite useful. I'm using it to collect good pictures of historic and modern laces. I'm often searching for illustrative examples for lace identification. There are others on pinterest with the same interest. Sometimes I pin their pins (when they have found something I hadn't seen) and sometimes they pin my pins. Either way the source address gets attached. [lace] pinterest question
Sherry -- I went to pinterest and did a search on the name of your website. In the upper left hand corner is a search slot that works on pinterest content. I pasted the link to your website into the search slot. It gave me 6 images from your lovely tatting. All but one had a link to your webpage under the photo. The one that didn't -- I clicked on the pinner's name and that took me to her pinboard which had the photo of your 3d flower. And that page had your photo with your website link below it. Sometimes the chain to get back to the source is a little long, when pinners take pins from other pinners. For myself, so long as the viewer can get back to me as the ultimate source, I'm OK with it. But I do realize that not everyone will agree. You could think of it as a form of flattery. My web host has an activity statistics program on his server. It tells me where my website visitors come from, where they got the link to my site. During the last year I have seen the number of visitors coming from pinterest grow exponentially. Pinterest is now a major source of traffic to my website. That ain't a bad thing. Lorelei - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] RE Pinterest
I love pinterest! I use it in several ways. I use it to collect pictures or links on a subject, to collect photos on a subject, to collect project ideas, to organize gif sets or memes for use on twitter/FB, and to collect sayings art work I just think are nice. When someone Pins something it can come from either a web site or from their own computer. If the before mentioned angels were pinned from the Yahoo image search page than it would Not lead to the full web page. The pinner just viewed Image copied the URL then and pinned it. I do this a lot. I'm not always interested in the full page loading with all the bloggy text and sometimes if you do you have to then wade through more recent postings or articles to find what you want. Oft times I only want the pic, not because I'm stealing it for some nefarious reason, but I simply only want the pic as a inspiration, A future share on other sites, or that's pretty to look at again. While Pinterest is a searchable/followable site everyone I know uses it for personal reasons. I like seeing what recipes one friend is collecting or the latest picture of Tom Hiddleston from another. It's not really a public forum, but more like someone looking over my shoulder while I'm clipping magazines or scrap-booking. I wouldn't worry too much about it. If it bugs you that much start watermarking all your pics - that's what I do. And in the end the truth is if you don't want someone to pin it or copy it or reblog it, etc...just don't put it online. Robin -- Never, ever, let anyone tell you what you can and can't do. Prove the cynics wrong. Pity them for they have no imagination. The sky's the limit. *Your* sky. *Your *limit.
