[lace] spanish bobbins
Hello everyone, Can any of you tell me what kind of bobbins are used in Majorca? I've searched the internet without much luck. They have been described to me as having no neck or beads, about 1cm wide and 10-12cm long. They are suitable for a lady who has arthritis, does sewing in her lace and needs to find more of the same. Best wishes, Liz Pass In Poole, where it's warm and sunny. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Majorca bobbins
Firstly i do not know the answer to your question. Do they follow the Spanish styles? If so many would be quite large and fat and even long. No spangles certainly. However there is a high use of plain, almost Honiton like bobbins (with no pointed end) How's that for a useless contribution? I do not even know if i will send it... Yes i will, this list builds on each others ideas and thoughts Brian Cooranbong. Re: [lace] Majorca bobbins
I have friends who live in Majorca, as well as an uncle in Gibraltar, and friends in mainland Spain. It would appear that they use the same style bobbins as mainland Spain! This means that the bobbins are large and fat, for the most part. The other thing to think about is surely as a 'hobby' bobbin lacemaker, we use the style of bobbins which suit us, rather than the other way round! We like a particular style, or bobbin maker, and tend to concentrate on collecting those bobbins, which may be heavier or lighter than others. Just my 'ten pennorth'!! [lace] Jack A. Smith, LePuy Lace Expert ?
There is a prestigious Embroiderers' Guild of America scholarly event taking place next year here in the U.S. I hope I am not the only one interested in having the very best Lace scholars as speakers at such an event, especially since (generally speaking) the subject of Lace is not being taught in American institutions of higher learning. In a field of truly major embroidery and textile experts, Jack A. Smith is the one speaker who will give a Lace talk: Traditional Lace Making Techniques from the LePuy Area of France. Does anyone on Arachne know of this man and his level of Lace expertise? His official credentials are Professor of the History of Costuming and Costume Design at Elon University. He could not be found when I searched the faculty at this university, so I wrote to EGA for more information. By G**gling the Performing Arts Department at Elon University, he can be found, with a photo. No mention of Lace. He teaches Costume Design, Introduction to Theatre, Costume Construction, Theatre History and Literature, Theatrical Make-up and Global Studies. The Chairman of the EGA event has written to me that Dr. Smith is fascinated enough about LePuy Lace, that in his travels he returns to LePuy to hours and hours of study with the ladies who are continuing this tradition. She says he is a very entertaining speaker, has spoken to EGA chapters about his love of Lace making in LePuy. We should be delighted that Lace has even been considered for this EGA event. I will tell you in a later memo about it, since someone on Arachne may be interested in attending and it is open to all. I might attend, but will need a roommate. I know a lot about 4 of the 5 other speakers (all formidable experts) and their books. It will be an honor to be in their presence. Re: [lace] Majorca bobbins
I do not know if this will help you, but since I started learning bobbin lace here in Spain (about ten years ago) I was told that Mallorca bobbins were just like the regular ones used in the inland, but with a point in the lower end. This point is intended to make the sewings with the hook easier. Please take a look at the picture and you will see different sizes of this kind of bobbin, i.e. the smallest is 10 cms long and the biggest 14. https://picasaweb.google.com/108272442967349260352/Mallorquines?authkey=Gv1sRgCL6Qoc21yoKK8QE If I make a lace for which I need many bobbins then I use the thin ones; if I do a tape lace with only a couple of pairs then I take the thicker ones.
