Job offer: Looking for a Linux kernel driver developer

2022-12-21 Thread Shachar Shemesh

Hello everyone,

The company I work for, speedata.io, is looking for a Linux
  kernel developer.

A little about us:
The company is producing a domain specific processor. Think GPU,
but for a different type of task. The end result will be a PCI
card sitting in a PC, offloading some of the tasks.

As such, we need a kernel developer. This is both for writing the
host side drivers (not a huge part of stage 1, as we'll probably
rely quite heavily on the VFIO driver) and for an ARM Linux kernel
that orchestrate the device side operations.

I've had my share of startups, and while I haven't been there
long, I really like the vibe of the company. Both in terms of the
people working there and the focus on the right aspects of the
technology and in terms of the extras. And by that, I do not mean
the swag and happy hours (though there is a fair share of those),
but the family friendliness and respect of private time. I joined
the company late August. I always shut down my computer on
Thursday and turn it back on on Sunday. I've yet to see emails
  sent on Friday or Saturday.

If any of that sounds interesting to you, please let me know.

Shachar

Need Geek Code variant for determining expert-job fit (Re: [Job Offer] - Linux Sysadmin)

2021-10-24 Thread Omer Zak
Given that several questions need to be answered to determine fit among
a sysadmin and its prospective employer, one-liner description of the
job would require something similar to the Geek Code which was in use
during the Early Internet era.

[Job offer] LiveU is seeking Linux developers

2012-08-07 Thread Shachar Shemesh
Hi all,

LiveU (http://liveu.tv), my employer, currently has four open positions
for Linux developers at various skill levels.

About the company:
LiveU is the market leader in the field of cellular video bonding. The
company provides a bonded cellular UPLINK connection, as a cheap and
convenient replacement for a satellite truck for TV stations, as well as
some smaller form factors for more casual use. The company is located in
Kfar Sava, very close to my home, so it's very convenient, assuming you
are me.

The company is about five and a half years old, and is considered the
market leader in the video uplinking market. The company has clients in
most major TV stations in all continents.

The first response any programmer worth his salt has when hearing what
the company does is that this is something that can be completely
written in a weekend. This reaction is very understandable, but also
very wrong. Trying to balance the different properties, reliability and
performance of the various link types (LTE, 3G, Wifi, Ethernet) while
allowing low latency video so that an interviewer can ask a question and
not get 10 seconds of head nods is a challenge which is still being
improved.

The development is utilizing test driven development, agile (scrum) and
pair programming. The product is written mostly in Python and C++, and,
of course, runs on Linux. Due to the extensive use of pair programming,
at least reasonable interpersonal skills is an unmitigated requirement.

Please send all CVs directly to me, either this email or shachar at
LiveU dot tv. *Please do NOT call my, or Lingnu's, phone at 10pm**,
waking my child,**asking whether it is okay to fax me CVs.* I can't
believe this needs to be said, but prior experience shows otherwise.
Email is the only way to send CVs.

The open positions are:

Full Stack senior Linux developer

The position seeks someone who can take in the entire system. The other
positions are for someone who's going to specialize. This one is for
someone who is already familiar with as many aspects of our system as
possible. Experience in as many as possible of the following, in no
particular order:

  * C++
  * Python
  * TCP servers/clients
  * jQuery/Javascript/HTML5
  * Agile, eXtreme Programming
  * Linux internals - boot process, package management, make files.

Engine Developer

The engine is the component in the LiveU system whose job it is to
balance the traffic between the modems in order to create a useable
unified channel with maximal bandwidth and minimal latency. LiveU
systems currently support 2 seconds delay channels with HD quality
video. The primary purpose of this position is to modify the algorithms
used in order to bring the latency further down, while also improving
the end video quality.

The job entails building models of network behavior, analyzing these
models, and creating algorithms to maximize efficiency based on these
models.

Job requirements:

  * High skill level with C++ and STL
  * Understanding network protocols, such as TCP/IP. Ability to debug
network problems, and, more specifically, network performance
problems with a sniffer is a must.
  * Inquisitive mind and a researcher's attitude.
  * Python knowledge is an advantage

Senior Core Developer

This position is for a member of the core development team, currently
working on the LU40 product. The job entails mostly Python, with some
C++. Development is using test driver methodology. The tasks include
developing new feature, as well as the obvious solving bugs and helping
the support team.

Requirements:

  * Excellent familiarity of user level programming in Linux
  * Experience with large code base application development

Software front end

This position is for the GUI and other front ends of the system, both on
the device end and on the server side. The qualifications needed:

  * Familiarity with Javascript, jQuery, HTML and CSS. You will be asked
to show previous projects done
  * Python
  * CherryPy - an advantage
  * Django - an advantage

[job offer] RT/Embedded software engineer for its driver team

2012-07-24 Thread Gilad Ben-Yossef
Hi all,

EZChip Semiconductors ltd. is looking for a RT/Embedded software engineer
for its driver team.

This is a full time position, in Yokenam. Main development enshrinement is
Linux on embedded CPUs, but various other RTOS/OS are in the mix as well.

I can personally attest that its a good company to work for, full of bright
and nice people, that respects its employees and knows how to reward them
for their work.

The official requirements from HR are as follows (but do give me a buzz if
you're good but don't technically meet the requirements):

- Relevant academic background (software / electrical engineering) from
a respectable academic institute (e.g. University / Technion) with a
minimum grade average of 85
- Team player with good social skills
- Willingness to work hard

Previous experience with the following buzz words is an advantage:

Previous experience with embedded systems, networking, RTOS, embedded
Linux, packet processing, protocol stacks, profile, debug, unicycle riding

OK, I was joking about the unicycle riding, but the rest is real. :-)

Please send your application via:
http://atav.co.il/fb/show_job.php?jid=129th_uid=768tp=0

Feel free to email me privately if you have any questions.

Cheers,
Gilad

Failures are important, as long as you learned from them, although, failed
badly at X isn't something one sees often on resumes. Maybe we should
though.

At the worse case though you can claim having double experience

חנונים are nerds, there's a difference.
 http://www.nerdist.com/2010/03/geeknerddorkdweeb-venn-diagram/

I think what people object to here (or at least what I object to) is the
entire premise of the whole show.
There are a few base assumptions here which are, imo, not necessarily true:

1. All geeks are men.
2. By inference, no pretty women are geeks.
3. Men geeks want an air-headed pretty woman as their significant other.
4. Men geeks are incapable of talking to and impressing a woman on their
own, and therefore need a tv show to do it for them.

The whole show is degrading and embarrassing to any intelligent person, men
and women alike. The only possible reason I can see for wanting to
participate in this show is to say Look Ma! I'm on TV! Which is a
 boneheaded reason.
I think that's why anybody who does participate should not affiliate
him/herself with any self-respecting geek organization.

So this is yet another show that is trying to reinforce the
stereotype that girls need to be beautiful and stupid while
guys need to be clever.
Do they also pick the girls to be blond?

Or do they run the show with half of the beauties being
male for half of the geeks who are female?

I have a (probably unfounded) hope that guys on the linux

external (!) beauty.

BTW Was the name of the show originally

Yeah, go geeks. Apply!

Of course, if they can't cook then they're right out!

Seriously, though, a production company was looking for stereotypical
geeks and approached a Linux list maintainer. Were you not aware of
the stereotype before you joined the list? Would you think it
insulting if they were looking for Jewish extremists and approached
the Hebron community? If they were looking for Salsa dancers and
approached a community of Bolivian immigrants? These people know where
to find what they need. It does not mean that everybody on the list
meets the stereotype (they contacted Orna, a _female_) but it is
reasonable to assume that there exist in this community stereotypical
geeks. Where else should they have looked, in a gym? On the beach?

Sometimes they dress up the reality as well, to make it fit their stereotypes:

I suppose you don't expect pretty young girls to use Linux. So I guess
you think the men who use Linux are all geeks?

I think there are many geeks (and I do not mean hnoonim=socially
challenged , but people who are autodidact, keen on technology/science, have
a lot of enthusiasm and proud of it) in the FOSS community, both male and
female. I doubt the production was looking for the females, though, when
they asked me to forward this.

I think this list is at least 90% men. And the Hebrew word for geeks
is חנונים...

So this is yet another show that is trying to reinforce the
stereotype that girls need to be beautiful and stupid while
guys need to be clever.
Do they also pick the girls to be blond?

Or do they run the show with half of the beauties being
male for half of the geeks who are female?

I have a (probably unfounded) hope that guys on the linux
lists will look for other things in women than just their
external (!) beauty.

BTW Was the name of the show originally
The Beauty and the Beast?

Yeah, go geeks. Apply!

Gabor

Original name of the show was Beauty and the Geek, so close enough.

No, the Beuties are all women, and the geeks are all men, but the
criteria (de facto) is not how good the women look, nor how much
tech-savy the men. The real criteria is how uneducated/stupid the women
are, and how socially incapable the men.

I do not follow the show myself (there was some intention to watch it
during the first season, but there was a scheduling conflict with, no
less, The Big Bang, which carries the exact same line, only is
funnier, and you don't feel dirty for watching it). However, I actually
think that this is really a case of all round everybody wins. The Joe
public satisfies its curiosity for the bizarre, the production makes
lots of money, but more strangely, the participants actually get to
participate in a situation they would not, normally, get exposed to.
Yes, the price is relatively high, but this is an actual opportunity to
come out a better person, with better tools for dealing with life. There
is no stated aim of making the couples in the show couples in real life,
as far as I know.

It is my opinion (and people who watch the second season actually
disagree, saying I'm being optimistic) that the girls are not so much
stupid as they are comfortably narrow minded to the extreme (of course).
As for the guys, again, it's people who have no self awareness, no grasp
of how social interaction should take place and no tools to pick up the
hints that such interaction entails. While it has been ages since this
has been a description of the typical geek, if you cannot think of two
or three more or less usual contributors to this list who fit that bill
then you are either lying, have not been paying attention or one of them
yourself.

So, yes, the show promotes prejudice through selection bias, and most
people here would do well to not go to the trials, but then again, most
people here would not pass said trials because they are not interesting
enough anyways (read - not freaks enough to give a good peep show).
Those who are, though, have something to gain.

A true story. While back a client of mine was looking for an employee. I
passed the news along to the community, and one of the people who sent
them his resume was one of those names. After some consideration, I
decided not to warn the client, thinking that everyone deserve a decent
chance. I told the client something along the lines of he's technically
very good.

It didn't take long for the client to figure it out. Less than 10
minutes into the interview. After it was over, the interviewer came to
me, all in shock that such people even exist. The point I'm trying to
make is that these people advertise it by the way they look, the way
they talk and, most of all, the way they interact wherever they go.
Being a weirdo on TV for a chance to fix some of it may not be such a
bad trade off.

Hi,

After three years of being a happy Linux user, my mom had to replace her
computer for a new one. The problem is that she lives near Tiberias and
I Live abroad and she does not know any technitian that knows about

The task is easy to do. To put the old HD in the new PC, update Xubuntu

Please, contact me for your disponibility and prices.

Job offer: Linux programmer (can be a contractor)

Hi all,

This is actually two job offers disguised as one. One if working for
Lingnu itself, for which we are looking for a full time employee. The
other is for a client of ours, for a temporary position (about four
months, give or take). This can be either full time or contractors. The

The qualifications for both jobs are similar. Mostly user space (but
some kernel is not out of the question), ability for independent
working, and embedded oriented.

Applicants are welcome to contact me off list.

Second job - mostly C.

First job (for Lingnu) - whatever lifes brings on. C, C++ and Java
(Android) are a definite candidates. Anything else may go as well.

* Years of experience

At this point in time, I am not limiting the search. Pay would, of
course, vary accordingly.

* Remote work (from home for example)

In principle, the job is on site. For the first job there may be
specific cases where remote work will be possible. For the second one
it's on site only.

[Job offer] Lingnu Open Source Consulting is looking for a full time Linux programmer

2009-11-02 Thread Shachar Shemesh
Lingnu Open Source Consulting is a consulting (duh!) company based in
Kfar Sava. Most of our activities are doing projects for clients.
Working for us means being exposed to new challenges every few months,
as the tasks change. Not all of them are equally interesting, but we do
our best to make all of them open opportunities for personal growth.
Most of the projects are relatively short, which means that there's
always the next one...

Over the past year, we were involved in creating a Linux distribution
for a wireless modem, adapting a build environment for unmanned
airplanes, and adding Hebrew support to the HTC Magic - an Android
phone. At least at the moment, the future does not seem any less diverse
than our past.

In addition to that, we pride ourselves in providing an almost nonsense
free work environment. Our employees are there to work, not fill in
forms, attend meetings, give micro-reports to the boss (me) or any of
the other stuff that makes technical work less fun. We can not keep this
out altogether, but we certainly do our best to keep it to a minimum.
This list has at least one former employee, and a few people I've worked
with, and I'm hoping they can attest to this :-)

We are looking for a full time employee. Consultants and contractors
need not apply at this point in time.

We are looking for the following skills:

   * Programming experience with Linux at the Posix API level (fork,
 execve, dup, select etc.)
   * Linux kernel programming experience.
   * Working with the standard toolchains - gcc make are a must.
automake and autoconf a definite advantage.
   * At least one of QT, GTK or wxWidgets.

Experience in any of the following will be an advantage:

   * C++ and Object Oriented programming
   * Android development (or, failing that, Java)
   * Active participation in an open source project, preferably either
one you didn't start or one that has over 20 users and/or over one
 contributer, is a definite advantage

The job is customer facing. We are looking for someone with good human
relations skills. The projects will, often, mean being away from the
office with no direct management involvement. We are looking for
autonomous person with the ability to spot what needs to be done and
come up with suggestions for what to work on, and with the self
discipline to carry it through.

Resumes should be sent to jobs2...@lingnu.com.

Thanks,
Shachar

I speak for myself here, but I don't think, especially in this rocky
era, that we should be too picky. I wouldn't like to see openings for
Windows system programmers, but as far as I'm concerned, anything FOSS
related flies.

i only mentioned this, because someone else from my workplace posted
this job opening on the python-il mailing list earlier - and i wanted to
explain why i'm sending this to linux-il. also, since the original text
didn't mention linux anywhere - i wanted to make it clear, that the work
is being done on linux systems - you wouldn't find me there if that
wasn't the case ;)

sorry for the noise,

[Job Offer] Linux C/C++ programmer

2008-11-03 Thread Gilad Ben-Yossef

Hi there,

Codefidence is looking for a great C/C++ Linux programmer to join an
existing customer team as Codefidence liaison and resident Linux guru.

Excellent knowledge of C and/or C++, mastery of Linux and excellent
social and communication skills are required. Kernel programming or
embedded background are NOT required (but would be an advantage).

In other words - this is NOT a job for someone right out of college or
that has hard time expressing himself in person to other people but you
don't need to be a assembly eating, python wielding, compiler grokking
guru to apply.

Work will mostly be on the customer site in Raanana with some trips to
Codefidence office in Ness Ziona industrial park (but you can take a
train to get here, if you prefer).

Any questions? want to apply? contact me ([EMAIL PROTECTED]).

I'll try to answer anyone, but experience shows It usually takes me some
time to get back to everyone after the flood that follows such email, so
please excuse me in advance - it's nothing personal.

Cheers,

Gilad

Job offer: Lingnu Open Source Consulting

2008-09-11 Thread Shachar Shemesh

Hi all,

Lingnu Open Source Consulting, which is my company (I'm assuming most
list members know who I am) is looking for a full time software
developer. Our web site is as http://www.lingnu.com. We are located in
Kfar Sava, but sometimes the work entails working at client's locations,
wherever they may be.

About the company: Lingnu is a consulting company. Most of our work is
by doing smaller or larger scale projects for clients. This means that
we often get to do just the most interesting parts of what our clients
need doing :-). This is a non-stagnant work with plenty of opportunities
to learn and do new things on a monthly basis.

Lingnu offers a no-nonsense work environment. We believe that our
employees work best when they are not bothered by performance reviews,
constant requirement changes, status reports and meetings. We also
believe that personal time is as important to keeping an employee
productive as anything else, and do not believe in over-time unless a
client's server catches fire on a Saturday. Our work week is 42.5 net
hours long, and we will actively kick you out to see your family.

Lingnu is a strong believer in Free Software. The business reality is
that not all of our work can be open source, but we do try. We also
encourage our employees to work on open source, even, *within reason*,
sponsoring said work by allowing them to work during payed work hours or
hosting the results on our servers.

Job requirements:

   * Self managing autonomous personality. Employee must be able to
help diagnose what needs to be done, set up reasonable estimates
for how long it should take, and do it.
   * Desire to learn new technologies
   * Willingness to hunt problems down in other people's code and
 submit patches
   * People's person. Much of the work is customer facing, so good
 human relations is a must
   * Must understand and at least mildly support free and open source
 software.
   * Hamakor membership - an advantage
   * Familiarity with as many of the following technologies:
 o C and C++ - a must
 o Linux programming
 o Linux kernel programming
 o Windows (win32) programming
o Linux system - what goes where and why. Major advantage to
people who can show they have installed Linux From Scratch,
or at least know how it's done
o wxWidgets or other cross-platform GUI technologies.

Please send CVs to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Please be sure to include which
Linux distribution you use in the approach letter. Only suitable
candidates will be contacted. Confidentiality assured.
