Re: Where to buy a Linux based desktop in Israel?

2020-05-15 Thread marc volovic
I missed mist of the discussion, so pardon me for possible going over plowed
ground - it is probably difficult to nigh impossible to buy a linux-installed
machine, but it is quite easy to buy a "no os" machine (actually, with
freedos). Why not get one of them and deploy whatever flavour of Linux the
tickles your fancy?

And no - I am not going to debate which distro is shiniest.

Be actually constructive and more on-topic and answer the question.

The last computer I bought with Linux pre-installed was a purism laptop.
Rather expensive and cannot be bought in Israel. The OS is a Debian
derivative, and it works well out of that specific box. But then again,
if you don't limit yourself to Israel, there are a number of others.

I'm going to bow out of this debate now. I should have bowed out of it
long ago. First of all, I'm presumably on the same side as most of you
when it comes to the major important facts, as opposed to the side show
I've been discussing. Number two, I have nowhere near as much skin in

That's perfectly reasonable, although I'll personally never use or
recommend Mint again.

Here's the thing though: Somebody asks about about a pre-loaded
computer, and another guy says, to roll your own with Mint. There are
zillions of "we do it all for you", hardware ultrarecognition, easy to
install distros. So which did the person recommend *on an Israeli LUG
mail list*? Mint.

Huh? Which part of the preceding link's 20997 word pile of diatribes is

And that would have been sufficient if the Mint project

As of 2012, an Israeli company is listed (with an Israeli flag) in Linux

That is what you wrote then. However it is not really based on any data.
At the time IBM really wanted to continue developing its own fork of
OpenOffice and for that they did not want OpenOffice to continue with
the LibreOffice fork, that already existed (and had a license that would
prevent them from making a priprietary fork).

That is the most probably cause for Oracle to move OpenOffice to Apache.
Stallman wasn't really involved with LibreOffice at the time.

See my reply from then:
https://www.mail-archive.com/linux-il@cs.huji.ac.il/msg66440.html

Oh, and if you go a bit up that thread you see another message that
happened to be by me that mentions that Mint is such an anti-Israeli
distribution that it has partnered to Compulab (an Israeli company) that
ships boxes with Mint pre-installed, and they are clearly listed with an
Israeli flag in their "partners" page:
https://www.linuxmint.com/partners.php

So Clem was ignorant and made incorrect statements almost 15 years ago.
He realized he was wrong and repented (again, almost 15 years ago). And
yet you keep making those false accusations. Even after you were
corrected time and again.

Well, speaking only for myself, in 2009 I erased Mint from all my

FWIW: Around two months ago, when it was clear that with the corona
situation I'll need another laptop, for my kids' home-schooling, I
went to the nearby KSP store, asked what they can offer (without even
searching their site), and bought something that I can't find on their
site anymore, but similar ones are:

https://ksp.co.il/?select=.268..271..132..1784.==1=2=0=0_search===0=0==_real=

This link to a search result gives you all their Dell laptops with
Linux on them, cheapest first, which is currently ~ 2500 NIS. Mine was
~ 2300 NIS and has 256GB SSD (vs 512 for cheapest now).

It arrived with Ubuntu 18.04, everything worked out of the box. My
kids generally like it, and I too (but hardly ever use it, other than
for helping them), definitely for this price.

Cheapest there with 16GB RAM (which is what you wanted) is ~ 4000,
quite a lot higher, but perhaps you can add RAM to one of the others,
no idea.

Of course, if you buy a brand name, you can get it in any other
store, and are quite likely to get exactly the same thing, as opposed
to someone building it for you from parts.

RMS was bullied into canceling his Israeli University talks by his (paying)
Palestinian hosts. He explains here:

Can we PLEASE stop playing politics now? This is NOT the right forum, and
we're none of us any good at it. RMS himself is a great example.

So it has everything to do with Linux Mint, and the tiresome argument that
it should be avoided just because one of its lead developers may hold

Re: Where to buy a Linux based desktop in Israel?

2020-05-12 Thread Shlomi Fish
I have now tested all three links using chromium-browser and the "lynx"
browser on fedora and they all open fine in both browsers (as well as
firefox). Something is broken on your end, and I have no control on
proprietary browsers.

 Hi,

I'm looking to buy a desktop computer with Linux pre-installed for a
couple of senior citizens. I'd usually buy a generic PC and install myself,
but now due to the coronavirus that's not an option.
The main uses are web browsing and skype/zoom. Looking for a stable
distro and long term support (e.g. the latest Ubuntu LTS). The hardware
 needs to work out-of-the-box.
 Specification wish list:
 512GB SSD
 16GB RAM
A high-quality case and PSU (preferably 80+ gold)
 Webcam

The budget is around 2k shekels.
Are there any Israeli retailers that sell such configurations?

Regarding Safari, see

. Chrome is proprietary too (as opposed to chromium). Are you on an Apple
