Sorry for the delay. The programme does not respond to 30-seconds-long
 key presses.

I am sorry, it seems to be an issue in the game.

I have forwarded your bug report to upstream. Please continue the thread
 there.

 Thanks.

Here is the response I got from upstream:

This is about the following oolite bug

Bug #12620 ] Debian bug#400028: oolite does not respond to keyboard

I noticed that the user had a russian locale. Even if he has a latin alphabet
overlay, cyrillic
keyboards have different keymappings to us/uk keyboards. He'll probably need to
define a completely
different keyconfig.plist to get oolite to work properly with his locale.

Hope this helps!

Kaks.

I tag the bug as unreproductible for the moment since nobody is able to
reproducte it with a fresh Sid.

It would be really useful if the bug title would be present in the subject.

  Hi Eddy!

Hello,

 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ LC_ALL=C ls .kde
ls: .kde: No such file or directory

No, haven't got that. Still works.

Sorry, can't reproduce this bug, but I was using 1.4.0-4. Perhaps that
problem got solved somehow in the meantime? Would it be possible for
you to check, if the problems still exists in lenny? (Can't check the
  stable version myself right now.)

I tried to see if the bug still reproduces with the new neverball,
after Alexander and others said that they couldn't reproduce the bug
with the new version of neverball.

I backported the 1.4.0-4 version to etch and tried it again. The bug
was still there.

Then I suspected pulseaudio, which proved to be the culprit (the first
number in the prompt is the exist status of the previous command):

0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ neverball
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:864:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
Creating link /home/eddy/.kde/socket-twix.
can't create mcop directory
1 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ killall pulseaudio

I am a member of the usual pulse groups:

0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ groups eddy
eddy : eddy adm dialout cdrom floppy audio video plugdev staff users
powerdev fuse debpool pulse pulse-access pulse-rt packages

My pulseaudio config is attached. Nothing is enabled in client.conf.
Ditto for daemon.conf.

/etc/default/pulseaudio has:

PULSEAUDIO_SYSTEM_START=0
and
DISALLOW_MODULE_LOADING=0

Bug#470301: neverball: doesn't start if not using arts/kde

2008-03-10 Thread Eddy Petrișor
Subject: neverball: doesn't start if not using arts/kde
Package: neverball
Version: 1.4.0-1
Severity: serious
Justification: this bug should be gone in lenny

When trying to start nverball on a GNOME system without arts, neverball
fails:

0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ neverball
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:864:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
Creating link /home/eddy/.kde/socket-twix.
can't create mcop directory

This looks a lot like http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=396219
and I think the proper fix would be not to let an arts failure bring
down the entire game.

Known workaround is to create the ~/.kde/socket-`hostname -s` directory.

Your package fails to build with GCC 4.3. Version 4.3 has not been
released yet but I'm building with a snapshot in order to find errors
and give people an advance warning.

You can reproduce this problem with gcc-4.3 or gcc-snapshot from
 unstable.

I have just finished and committed (r4065) a patch against upstream
 trunk that fixes this issue.

Now I am too tired to backport it to sid's wormux right now, but here is
patch attached for reference. I'll probably backport this by the end of
 the weekend.

I backported and added yet another patch to fix 0.8beta4 since trunk was
more advanced wrt to gcc-4.3 compatible fixes than 0.8beta4.

If any DD from the Debian Games Team would be kind enough to test and
upload the package I prepared (I haven't uploaded the binaries due to
bandwidth concerns and because the package will be compiled anyway).

I'm not sure what would be the best way to handle the installation.
synaptic install game would be great, except synaptic doesn't

Synaptic must have *some* support for that, since update-manager uses it

As reported in Launchpad[1] by Ryan Prior, the
startup-script used for the Debian (and thus Ubuntu)
packages does not seem to detect direct rendering
properly if using proprietary ATI drivers

/usr/games/warsow:34 makes Warsow not start if
`glxinfo | grep direct rendering: No` returns any
 content,

This test is correct, since the only content that test should generate is
actually any line containing that string, which can't be anything else but an
indication of lack of direct rendering support.

I can't reproduce this on my system; the game plays fine.

Wow, your defoma installation was broken. Any true type font that you install on
your system should have been registered with defoma.

This issue looks to me like #402014. I am merging with that.

Bug#448991: Update on Attempt

2007-11-05 Thread Eddy Petrișor
On 04/11/2007, ericzen [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
 Package: wormux

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

I, too, found that point on their site and gna (regarding an ubuntu
report). I did a complete removal (and deleted lingering directories
(moving the one in my home over).

Ok...

I don't have that classics, but that's not the problem. An attempted
fresh re-install came to the same problem.

Well, I think you kind of null-ified any chance of reproducing the
same bug you encountered and reported initially. I asked for the
classic.xml file *you* modified.

That was the file I was interested in.

Getting the original file was as simple as reinstalling the wormux-data package.

You say that after install you found the same problem. Do you mean
that you *purged* *both* wormux and womux-data and *still* got a
segfault?

I was trying to install it via source from their site (after another
fresh complete removal (+directories) ) and came across an odd problem:
It can't find libcurl or libxml++, despite me adjusting the individual

Yes, because they are versioned in Debian. But still I don't think is
relevant for Debian you reproducing that bug with the original source,
since the Debian source contains some fixes which the original source
does not.

Please, if you still have your modified classic.xml file, send that to
the BTS. After that, purge and reinstall both wormux and wormux-data
and see if your bug is still present.

P.S.: If you really want to compile from upstream's source, which I
*don't*recommend*, try to apt-get build-dep wormux (as root) and
then to compile the source. That command will take care to install the
build dependencies and will allow a clean build.

Also, if after you send a copy of your altered xlassic.xml file, would you

problems have otherwise occurred from it (freeze on some suicides and
 accidental infinite teleports)

To be honest, wormux's upstream has acknowledged that currently a badly modified
classic.xml file could lead to freezes, infinite rounds/ammo, deadlocks and it
might be a cause for segfaults. All these since the game doesn't really do
validation for the data inclassic.xml.

Also it is considered good practice to register desktop files (via dh_desktop -
take care, it does not install the file, it just registers it)

Can you explain the reason. The manpage is not very clear about
 that.

- First note that I said 'dh_install*' not 'dh_install'.
- Second, consistency with the rest of the rules file and ease of following up
of the flow (e.g. oh, they're using debhelper, ok, all thos missing files in
the .install file)
- debian/rules is cleaner this way
- usually dh_* scripts are a lot smarter that any individual can come up with in
a shot
- why would you use install for some of files and leave the rest to dh_install*?
- dh_* offers really nice ways to deal with exceptions

Question of the day: Did you know that debhelper compat 5 does not install 0
sized files?

(which is the case for uscan). You can check that by echo-ing stuff and
piping them into “perl -ne 'print if /[\d.]/'”.

You can also look for “character class” in perlre(1).

uscan's man page suggests otherwise

Anyway, some things are missing, like lintian overrides. I'm not saying
one cannot install them through dh_install*, but that's usually a pain.

wow, lintian overrides are missing what's the pain? look at oolite's
override installation:

If you're talking about dh_installdocs, yes. Because it is documented in

 about the debhelper compatibility bumps).

I have the feeling you are a minority, that's why I asked. I hope people are

Sorry. To be honest I am never sure how verbose to get in commit logs.

Well, the problem was that this change was not mentioned at all in the commit

IIRC there is a tool that allows to commit with the appended changes in
debian/changelog, so all you have to do is document properly in the changelog

About the archive rebuild: The rebuild was done on about 50 AMD64 nodes
of the Grid'5000 platform, using a clean chroot containing a sid i386
environment. Internet was not accessible from the build systems.

This is due to the changes in the underlying tools, gnustep-make and
libgnustep-base-dev which are in a transition currently. The package in our
(Debian Games Team's) repo fixes these issues and is addapted to the new tools,
but I needed to do a build in sid before requesting for an upload.

I'll do that tonight and ask for the upload. Lucas, I guess you just voluneered

Hmm, well, the creative commons is a suite of licenses, not a single license.
Also, they have passed through several reviews and the most recent version of
the licenses is version 3.0 (by chance, this is also the first version that
includes at least one license considered as free by the Debian Project).

I prefer you use the models for demos or freeware projects.

I am not sure what you mean by „freeware projects”[1]

A license as the GNU GPL, 2 or 3 clause BSD-like license, MIT, or CC-BY 3.0
/CC-BY-SA 3.0 are considered free according to those points.

So the question is: which rights you want be available with your work? I
strongly suggest either CC-BY or CC-BY-SA in order to allow the work to be
included in the collection of free (as in freedom) software/works included in
Debian and also other distributions.

Note that having a restriction on non-commercial use qualifies the work as
non-free since that would mean also:
- not being to create a compilation that contains the game and sell that
compilation
- not being able to create a commercial product (be it a game or some other
work) based on that (art)work
- not being able to use the game in a commercial environment (like a gaming
room, a commercially sponsored game tour that uses the game for the contest)

You might find it easier to choose your license by using the license selector
the CC site offers at this address (then reply with the address of the resulted
page):

http://creativecommons.org/license/

Regards and sorry for my bad english :-S

No problem, we all have that same problem ;-)

Thanks for the reply and all the help!

of guidelines by which the Debian Project considers free (as in freedom) a piece
of software/artwork/copyrighted work:

Well, I didn't work on this issue, but I worked on another issue that affected
team work, namely the fact that the layout information was written always in
.svn/deb-layout and local changes had precedence over any remote changes; that
sounds sane, but is not since old information stored (after being imported from
the remote info) locally was not following remote changes, making team work a
pain and forcing people to see .svn/deb-layout as a real pain.

since the issue does not affect core functionality, nor does it disregards

Please upload wormux 0.8beta2-1

2007-09-09 Thread Eddy Petrișor
Hello,

The Wormux project released today Wormux 0.8beta2 and I updated the package in
svn. I've build the package in Lenny (I did the testing for the Wormux project
on my latop :-) ) and also one in a sid chroot.

The (Sid) package (not signed) is available at:

http://users.alioth.debian.org/~eddyp-guest/upload/wormux_0.8beta2-1/

The lenny files (signed) are available at:

http://users.alioth.debian.org/~eddyp-guest/upload/wormux_0.8beta2-1/lenny/

Please someone upload the package to Sid, 0.8 is stable enough to replace
0.7.9-4.

Hello,

First I want to thank you for the incredible game that you created. I have
played the game quite some time and every
time I start it I am impressed with the complexity and polishing that went into
this game. It is, by far, one of the
best (if not the best) free software games that exist today. Thank you.

Since I liked it so much, I decided that people using the same GNU/Linux as
myself would probably like the game
themselves, too, so I packaged it for Debian (starting from some preliminary
work made by Giuseppe Borzi (gborzi on the
forum).

Recently I finished packaging it and I proceeded to upload it into the official
Debian archive. The upload was rejected
because the license of the glest-data package only allows redistribution, but
without allowing the same things that the
glest license (GPL) allows.

This means that, although the game (engine) itself would allow it, the whole
game can't be a part of an official Debian
release because the depended upon data does not allow the same rights as the
code license (modification, redistribution
of modified versions, not being entangled to one jurisdiction or one person,
etc...). What a shame!

Since having this game in Debian proper would be a really nice, I wanted to ask
you if you would like to change the
license for the data package to allow redistribution under a license that would
offer the same/equivalent terms as the
code of the game.

Note: Please don't worry now about which license you should use or create. I am
part of the Debian Games Team (cc-ed
address) which has quite some experience in choosing proper licenses for -data
packages (this is a common problem for
games since most developers don't think in the same terms about data material
as they do with code).

+The prboom debian package is maintained in subversion by the Debian Games

if the tarball for the current version in trunk is linked through the property

 Hello,

I think there should be a versioned dependency between the -dev
package and the library. If the user installed a newer -dev with older
library, he would probably not be able to link against the older
library (because of the new API).

 Yes you're right.

Make sure you use the upsteam source as version since there might be binNMUs
and the API should not change anyway from
a.b.c-X to a.b.c-Y.

I use pulseaudio on an etch system. I installed (pinned) chromium from sid (it
pulled openal from lenny) and the only
weird thing I could hear was some noise that sounded more like interference
from the internal bus or bad quality
speakers. I think this is a hardware issue ...

I didn't try with oss as an openal backend, but probably the reason for the
distortion happening only for alsa is that
in oss mode there is only one timing thread/one app accessing (or trying to
access the sound card) causing enough delay
for the sound to resonate with the frequencies on some internal bus (which
applies perfectlyto your case).

Jean, do you have time to take care of the packaging? If not, I will probably
be able to make a package only during my
stay in debconf (16th-24th) since the next week I'll buried in preparation for
the trip.

 Hello!!

Wormux 0.8beta1 will be released soon (today or tomorrow)!!

The branch is created, we are only waiting documentation howto play in
french and in english to release it!! If anybody knows how to export it
from the wiki (http://www.wormux.org/wiki/howto/fr/play.php), please let
 us now!

Or better, if you are team member, you can create the tar.bz2 archive
(with the doc in documentation directory) with make dist-bzip2 and
upload it on the download web pages!!

 Here is the changelog:
 - Better network game support (visible by default)
 - Use 3826 as default network port. This number is registred by IANA for
 Wormux
 - Music during the game
 - Better result menu
 - New maps: Bankiz, Christmas, Crystal, Green Hills, Halloween 2, Space 2
 - Experimental random map generator
 - Optimize water rendering
 - Bug fixes

i'd like to see a backtrace of the crash. please run the following
 commands from the command line:

 cd /usr/lib/games/sauerbraten
 gdb ./sauer_client

then type 'run' at the gdb prompt. once it's crashed send the output of
the 'bt' command at the gdb prompt to this bug.

Unless you haven't stripped the binaries in the package (which is against the
policy) or you provided a -dbg package
with the symbols and asked the user to install it, your advice is useless.
Please clarify.

Hello,

I have finished the gcc-4.2 compatibility backport (from upstream's trunk) of

initially[*], but I don't mind if someone else
does it faster :-)

Michael, do you think that a reference to this page would be enough to close
this bug? (maybe even add a html export of
hte page as it was at some point and include that in the package?)

 hello eddy,

/usr/share/doc/wormux/README does indeed have information about keys
to use, but i'm thinking about the newbies who have no idea where a
readme would be and how to get started with a game like this. even
the readme doesn't describe the objective of the game. i am
wishlisting a first brief map that will start of by saying press this
key, aim with this, shoot with this, select weapons with this, your
goal is to wipe out all the other chars, etc.

 thanks for your consideration.

 mike

I have a few proposals to the resolution of this bug. Will forward to upstream
the proposal, and will forward the bug,
after I'll open it.

Where is the change about the compatibility? I don't see it.

Also, it is a good idea to state that you are aware of the
differences between the two compatibility levels (I assume you are,
aren't you?) and those do not affect the package.

AFAICT this would count as a feature release and I think this
release will not be hinted into testing, if you plan for an upload.

Please note that Oolite is a game that runs on OS X, linux and

If anyone wants to play the game, there is a workaround:

# mkdir -p /usr/share/games/wormux/font/
# ln -s /var/lib/defoma/fontconfig.d/D/DejaVu-Sans.ttf
/usr/share/games/wormux/font/DejaVuSans.ttf

this path is stored in pieces and I haven't found it yet.(

If a game project releases versions X, Y and Z, and is only to host Z on its
server, what will distros A and B do if they included X and Y and promise
many years of support for it.

Obviously, depending on specific server versions is a bad idea, but this
 seems
to be increasingly common. For example, there are many packages which have
something to do with Google, and if Google changes its remote APIs then the
packages will break. They already ceased to offer their SOAP service, and as
a result, packages such as libnet-google-perl are basically worthless, unless
someone writes a replacement service for it.
(Hm, I should file a bug report against it...)

I wonder what can be done about this for games which depend on specific game
servers. For example, would there be an issue to let new game clients go into
proposed-updates for a stable Debian release if that happens?

The package dependency management of dpkg is currently entirely unaware of
such dependencies, but I think at some point one wants to keep track of this.
 Suggestions?

AFAICT, this is currently covered either by backports or unofficial packages
(either client or server).

Another alternative would be placing such packages under the volatile section,
but I doubt it would be accepted by release managers since new server versions.

Another idea would be to have something like games.debian.net as a server for
the games delivered in Debian stable. There have been some discussions around
this topic, but there are things like bandwidth which are a concern.

Yet another idea is (as a user) to pin packages from testing or try to install
via source the game from testing (by means or srcinst which is able to install
packages from source).

I know, neither of these is a good solution, although the games.debian.net
would be the most smart one, IMHO, but the most expensive, too.

Both are in the ttf-bitstream-vera package on Debian.

Since Gonéri confirmed that Bitstream Vera fonts work instead of the tahoma, I

The Dejavu font is derived from the bitstream vera font, and is a superset of

The DejaVu fonts are a based on the Bitstream Vera fonts. They support a

Indeed, ttf-dejavu *is* a better font and will be the first font alternative in

TEAM17's Worms (heh, I
am so wired into wormux that I wrote three times wormux before writing worms)
game.

I think we should fix/investigate this issue first...

You mean Worms of Prey, not Wormux, right?

Yes, Worms of Prey :-D . And I mean skins (the worms are identical, AFAICT),
not the whole graphics

I am not sure about graphics (they do NOT look like what I have seen in
the Worms games, but I have not seen many), but the sound effects are
clearly stolen... Just look for Team17 Software Ltd. in the WAV's.

Too bad. Looks like a fun game.

Hmm, maybe that free content database might help us WRT sounds. I have looked
at the short clips and
the sounds are very similar to the ones I heard in Quake3 or maybe Unreal
Tournament.

I wouldn't want to cripple the game, but I was wondering if nosound would be an
option to start with
and we could focus on the graphics for the moment.

Bug#400333: wormux - FTBFS: Build-depends on unavailable package libsdl-ttf1.2-dev

# fix is pending in our SVN in the Etch branch of wormux

sbuild never looks past the first branch of an or'ed build-dependency. This
is a known, long-standing behavior, and is fairly desirable in this case
anyway because we don't want a package uploaded to unstable that's built
 against an obsolete libsdl-ttf1.2-dev package.

With this upload we'll have builds for all arches done against 2.0-dev

At minimum, please reverse the order of these or'ed build-dependencies; at
best, please drop libsdl-ttf1.2-dev from the list, since it's obsolete.

... since I implemented the best solution.

Will do a local build and then I'll ask for a sponsor.

Bug#395992: new upstream release

The code is not stable enough to enter Etch, thus we will not

it's reasonable to upload it then not to sid, yes.

That's why it was prepared for experimental ;-)

We do, in spite of that fact,
an experimental package in our SVN and our autobuilder should
build a package from our SVN repo.

please don't do 'unofficial' packages. experimental is a very nice
test-bed excately for that purpose.

We have an autobuilder which helps us see which packages are broken
in our SVN trunk. Is as unofficial as the packages you build on your
system before uploads ;-).

Currently I would like to make some more (experimental) changes to
the wormux package (not even committed in SVN :-) then request for
an upload.

if sponsoring is the issue, just tell me and I'll sponsor it.

Thanks. We could also use another active DD in the Debian Games Team.

I would have liked better a patch that wouldn't make this confusion. I
will look in the upstream repo to see if their patch is better (I think
they fixed this issue in r904 in their svn)

I have changed the patch as seen at:
http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/pkg-games?op=comp[EMAIL PROTECTED][EMAIL PROTECTED]

Changelog (in SVN):
* no more redundant resolutions in the resolution list
* the current resolution is marked by * since it doesn't need translation
* unfortunately the current resolution is always at the top, not ordered

Thanks again, Hanna :-) .

If the package is ready to upload, please let me know if you'd like to
upload the source to mentors.debian.net, which is the mechanism we've used
up until now, or if you'd prefer that I pull directly from you SVN
repository. If the latter, please go ahead and tag the package and I'll
use that tag for the upload.
I will shout and give complete details when I have a prepared package.
but I want to incorporate the patch for #395217 since an upload will be
 done.

The package is ready for upload and can be found at
http://pkg-games.alioth.debian.org/upload/wormux/

The urgency has been set to medium as it fixes 2 RC bugs, although I am
not sure if this shouldn't have been high. Steve?

Also, I have seen that wormux has been removed from testing, I hope this
package will replace the missing one, right (i.e. Etch will release with
wormux included in it)?

sorry Eddy. My fault. I've to do a script to find missing or

If one uses svn-buildpackage, this should not happen because after
tagging a pending commit with the suite set to UNRELEASED is
automatically prepared.

I don't think tools are the answer here, but personal order.
