running totem from the command line on a file causes various fonts to

is an accessibility issue for some people.

This must be because totem starts gnome-settings-daemon. As of
gnome-control-center/capplets-data 1:2.20.3-2, the settings daemon will
not be spawned automatically through dbus, so this should be fine now.
Could you confirm this fixes your issue?

For these ones, this is not obvious, although they only use a small

After moving my ~/.gnupg folder somewhere else seahorse worked again. I
could copy my private keyring back and migrated all important keys back
into my new public keyring. The problem still occurs with my old
 pubring.gpg.

I’d be interested to know whether the bug still happens with version
2.20.3-2, which fixes an important issue with ElGamal keys.

On a new installation, it is impossible to use gnome-keyring through
dbus (for example to save a WPA key with network-keyring).
 Creating a
 file /usr/share/dbus-1/services/gnome-keyring-daemon.service
 containing the three lines

 [D-BUS Service]
 Name=org.gnome.keyring
 Exec=/usr/bin/gnome-keyring-daemon

 solves the problem.
I suggest that this file is created when gnome-keyring is installed.

Sorry, but we are not going to do that. If gnome-keyring-daemon is
started through dbus-daemon instead of the session manager, it won’t
obtain the correct environment variables and it is going to break one
way or another while interacting with other agents.

I can’t reproduce that specific issue; such problems usually have their

What video driver are you using?
Does the problem also happen with iceweasel or with other gecko-based

How can I change this to correct?

If you mean that other applications deal with filenames in the UTF8
encoding, this is expected. The shell is broken in the sense that it
supposes the on-disk encoding is the same as that of the locale.

As the shell is unlikely to ever be fixed, the only solution if you want
to use both a shell and GUI applications is to use an UTF8 locale (or to
set G_BROKEN_FILENAMES, but this is not recommended).

packages where update-icon-caches is the last command in the postrm
script and thus determines the exit code, e.g. openoffice.org-common.

While the problem with the icon cache was real and not related to
update-icon-caches, the information is too little and the consequences
of serious upgrade problems are too severe. This should be improved.

I guess we can display a big warning if gtk-update-icon-cache fails, and
exit without error to allow the upgrade to proceed nevertheless.

Would that be OK for you?

Indeed it work. There may be something to do at least for the error

mount it by command line but not by the applet.

It seems that calling “mount /net/maison” (without the trailing slash)

If there is a bug somewhere, I’d say it is in mount itself; it is not
unreasonable to expect paths to be canonicalized, so mount should

When my laptop battery gets low, the battstat-applet displays a warning
dialog according to its configuration. When AC power is connected, this
dialog is automatically dismissed; however, when the depleted battery is
replaced with a fresh one (e.g. by initiating a TuxOnIce suspend cycle,
replacing the battery, and resuming from TuxOnIce), the battstat-applet
warning dialog remains on the screen. The warning text predicts battery
failure more than an hour in the future and a charge level of 100%.

The battstat-applet warning dialog should disappear automatically if the
battery capacity or remaining charge increase to the extent that the
conditions for displaying the warning dialog are no longer true.

Does this bug still happen with gnome-applets 2.20 in unstable?

Epiphany renders the body text font differently to iceweasel.
Iceweasel's version looks nice and smooth, but Epiphany's has extra

I have installed all the toem, dvd, css, and gstreamer plugings I

This is a known issue; you should use totem-xine to read your DVDs,
because totem-gstreamer cannot anymore.

BTW this is one of the reasons why I’ve been arguing for letting
totem-xine become the default for lenny, because I don’t see this fixed

Bug#461373: netspeed_applet: Monitors the wmaster0 interface when configured to monitor a connected device

Wireless devices drivers using the mac80211 stack have a wmaster%d
supplementary interface that is used internally. This interface doesn't
have RX/TX statistics (probably because it's unconfigured, which is
intended), so when netspeed monitors it, it fails to monitor bandwidth.

It appears netspeed picks wmaster0 over wlan0 when configured to monitor
a connected device. It should prefer wlan0.

Normally, Netspeed uses the default route to select the device. If the
route method fails, it uses libgtop which should also say wmaster0 is
unconfigured.

Could you send the output of “route -n” and “ifconfig -a” on your
system?

Bug#461829: seahorse-agent Improperly Caches SSH Keys by Default; Refuses to Relinquish Them

 Package: seahorse

seahorse-agent upon startup appears to sniff through my ~/.ssh
directory, find any SSH identity keys, and automagically add them to
ssh-agent. This appears to be default behavior, and is really, really
 wrong.

This setup is far from being the standard, even among people heavily
using SSH keys. This problem will exist only for a very small minority,
for which the preferences are here to deactivate the behavior.

Frankly, I think you should talk about that with upstream, on
seahorse-list at gnome.org. This is far beyond the things we are ready
to change for the Debian package.

After some Googling around, I discovered this broken behavior
can be disabled via seahorse-preferences, so my immediate issue is
solved. Nevertheless, I contend this, at the very least, should not be
default behavior, and in fact should be seriously reconsidered. There
is absolutely no way for seahorse-agent to know the policy
considerations attached to any keys it may find lurking in ~/.ssh, and
therefore should not -- by default, anyway -- be trying to do anything
 clever or helpful with them.

Seahorse is precisely here for doing helpful things with, among other
things, SSH keys. The behavior you find annoying is helpful for people
with a sane setup.

So, we are not going to change the default unless something useful
arises from your discussion with upstream.

Cheers,

was in fact different from the one in 2.10 too, but the 2.10 one
hasn't departed from the original so much yet, only colors changed).

There is ClearlooksClassic, which is shipped in gnome-themes.

Apparently, removing the colons from the patch fixes the problem. I

No, this is not the problem. The “uri” argument is already cut at the
first column.

Ah, sorry about that; could you confirm the encoding with your setup?
I think having a trailing delimiter for the protocols is useful,
especiallyt if you imagine caldav2:// or webcal-something:// URLs
in the future, so would prefer keeping the anchor.

Well, as the uri is already correctly split, this shouldn’t happen, so
the current version of the patch in the SVN (without the columns) should
be fine.

Bug#460811: change depends on gnome-cups-manager to system-config-printer

 Package: gnome
 Version: 1:2.20.2
 Severity: wishlist

please consider changing the gnome depends on gnome-cups-manager to
 system-config-printer

gnome-cups-manager no longer has an active upstream and has (at the
 moment) 39 bugs against it.

system-config-printer has an active upstream and less bugs (albeit with far
 few users)

I see system-config-printer has much improved in the last release
(meaning it is now usable), but there is still to do; currently it seems
impossible to use it to setup new printers because of its handling of
passwords.

I’ll try too see with the system-config-printer maintainer how we can
make it good enough to be the default.

Cheers,

if (strncmp (mount_point, fhs23_toplevel_mount_points[i],
 sizeof(fhs23_toplevel_mount_points[i])) == 0)

so that it would exclude both '/home/' and any filesystems mounted under
'/home'? This is just an example, it should be more elaborate since the
above code can lead to false positives as it would also exclude the
'/home_company' filesystem (which would not mounted underneath '/home'). It
wouldn't be too difficult to implement a patch for this feature (hide a
system volume and all volumes underneath it). Should I do it?

This is a good idea, but that needs better thought. Especially, volumes
under /media and /mnt must not be ignored.

The way I have dealt with it until now is to add commonly found
locations in 06_blacklist-directories.patch.

You say that Nautilus only blacklists from a hardcoded list but, actually,
reading that code I see it calls libhal_volume_should_ignore() to
explicitly ignore volumes. It seems that if a volume has the property
volume.ignore defined in HAL it is not presented. So it actually seems that
the sysadmin could adjust the configuration files under /etc/hal/fdi to
explicitly tell nautilus to ignore a volume.

Yes, both blacklists add together.

Could this behaviour please be documented somewhere?

It could, but I???m not sure where to put it so that people interested in
  it will find it.

It should be in Nautilus Help documentation (as the manpage is very brief).

Frankly I don’t think so. This is the user manual and should not talk
about such advanced settings.

That's where I tried to look for it first. Other options would be GNOME's
System Admistrators Guide, maybe under the 'lockdown' section. Since this is
actually limiting what users see of the system underneath from their
 Desktops.

That would be a better option indeed. As it is a translated manual, I
also think it should be done upstream.

Bug#456114: gconf: Please support splitting preferences into multiple files by path

2008-01-11 Thread Josselin Mouette
Hi,

Le mercredi 12 décembre 2007 à 23:49 -0800, Josh Triplett a écrit :
I keep my home directory in version control, as a means of sharing it
across systems, keeping it backed up, and tracking changes to it. I'd
like to add some of my gconf configuration to version control as well.
However, gconf contains various types of preferences, some of which I
want to version and some of which I do not. For instance, I would
 like to version /apps/metacity/general/num_workspaces,
 /apps/evolution/mail/display/thread_list, and most of
/apps/gnome-terminal, but I do not want to version
 /apps/evolution/last_version,
 /apps/gnome-settings/gnome-panel/history-gnome-run, or
 /apps/meld/window_size_{x,y}.

Thus, I'd like the ability to have multiple readwrite gconf stores,
with different (non-overlapping) sets of preferences stored in each.
I could then have all the prefs I want to version stored in one file,
machine-specific prefs stored in another file (bonus if I can use the
hostname in the filename, so all the machine-specific files can
coexist in parallel), all the prefs I never want to version in a file
to ignore, and all other prefs in a new file so I can check and
 classify them.

This potentially shares some goals with online-prefs-sync, which would
also benefit from having a list of preferences safe to sync across
machines, and which provides some support for the idea of safely
changing a store underneath gconf and having it notice. However, it
differs in several ways, most notably the use of local stores for
 everything.

This is definitely a good idea, but it far outreaches what we can afford
to do in Debian. You should bring this up on the upstream list
(gconf-list at gnome dot org).

Just like online-prefs-sync, this is also probably something that would
be more easily implemented as a separate application. Just define a list
of directories and dump them in a versioned directory, and you just have
to write some code to go back and forth. Symbolic links in the gconf
tree might also work.

Cheers,

Bug#372450: gnome-power-manager: should be fixed now

yeah, and (beeing the direct opposite of what Martin wrote) IMHO this
behaviour totally sucks. I've never seen that any system is so ignorant
to a user pressing the power button. I actually accept that the system
shall not shutdown _immediately_ if someone presses the power button,
because it might happen by accident (also I can not really understand
how someone can press the power button accidental) but at least it
should do that after a timeout just like it does if I call
System-Shutdown in the gnome menu. Actually this is the behaviour I
expect and so certainly the most of previous windows users do.

Is there any chance that this will be changed?

The behavior you are describing (shutdown dialog with a timeout) is
already implemented in our SVN. You can expect that it will work in
unstable soon.

File renaming is a crucial functionality of a file manager, and we would

Many bugs in the testing version are already fixed in the unstable
version, this is why there is no use in reporting them.

You can temporarily point your sources to unstable and upgrade only the

For some reason, this Nautilus version does not represent all of the
available partitions as devices in the Desktop and in the Places.
It currently only shows icons for the following locations:

 /usr2
 /home/mirrors
 /home/mirrors/debian

Previous versions did show all the devices, including /usr, /var and /home.

I've been unable to find in Nautilus documentation what criteria does it use
to present volumes in the user's Desktop and how to adjust that criteria to
 suit my needs.

The exclusion list is hardcoded in gnome-vfs and based on the FHS v2.3.

Could this behaviour please be documented somewhere?

It could, but I’m not sure where to put it so that people interested in
it will find it.

libeel2-2.20 is a library! Why is it recommending applications? IMO
it's perfectly reasonable to have libeel2-2.20 installed for e.g.
gnome-mount without wanting or needing synaptic and app-install-data,

Certainly. And this is why these are recommends, not depends.

so these packages SHOULD NOT be recommended by libeel2-2.20.

Is there a good reason for this change?

The reason is, eel-open-with-dialog now uses app-install-data and
synaptic to install applications able to read a specific MIME type.

Granted, these recommendations could be moved to nautilus, but this
change is not nautilus-specific; that was the whole point in doing it in
libeel.

of what I've been doing at that time.

Some process seems to keep the desktop alive, but top shows nothing but

Logout functions normally after the desktop has been runing for a few

Maybe this is related: After logging in, the splash window persists for
about a minute with the word nautilus at the bottom.

Yes, this is related. This is certainly caused by a buggy application
that is declared to the session manager but doesn’t register to it.
There is a 2 minutes timeout, until which gnome-session is waiting for
it to register.

You need to dig in the programs launched in .gnome2/session to find out

this issue. Apparently, there might some broken schemas in the user

 was to run:

 gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/gnome-power-manager

I guess this bug can be closed now.

Thanks for the investigation, it is good to know that it comes from a
configuration issue.

However I’d like to know which exact key is causing the issue; if the
problems occurs often when doing upgrades, it would be better to fix it
for all users instead of asking them to wipe their configuration.

Bug#452162: libgtk2.0-0: gtkPrint blank pages in gnucash and gnumeric

Beginning somewhere around November 19, 2007 some printing has broken
and I think its related to gtkPrint. I realise there are lots of
printing changes going on in deb right now, but I think the commonality
I'm seeing in symptoms points to gtkPrint.

Specifically, in gnucash (which uses both gnomeprint and gtkprint) check
printing is broken. For each check printed, a blank page is printed.
This result is consistent whether printing to a file (pdf or ps) or to an
 actual
printer. Check printing in gnucash uses gtkprint. Meanwhile, report
printing, using gnomeprint, functions just fine. I've also tested this
on gnucash svn trunk with the same results.

GtkPrint does not do the actual printing stuff, which is handed to
cairo. It seems more likely to me that this code, being new in gnucash,
has a few bugs.

In gnumeric, which uses gtkprint, printing is completely broken. It
causes an foomatic-rip failed error in cups. There is more to the
gnumeric issue, I think. I downgraded out of the ghostscript package
into the gs-* packages and the foomatic-rip failure went away, and
gnumeric then printed only blank pages.

There have been serious printing issues with gnumeric, but they should
be mostly solved with 1.8.0. Could you please try again?

This is very strange, because the only things that changed is the way to

of dbus-daemon. However it shouldn’t affect any of the functionality,
unless there is some weird XKB dark magic somewhere.

Something that may be a hint is that Super is now recognized as Mod4 by
the keybindings properties. Maybe you just need to update your shortcuts
to match this - although I have no idea why it would have changed in the

This is probably because you configured your session to be in German.
You can do this by selecting the language in the login screen. There
could also be something about GDM which now reads /etc/profile and
~/.profile (this will probably be dropped in a future upload).

 Which “shutdown” button is missing?
In taskbar desktop was a button or item to shut down the pc. Now the
button / item is missing. I can only lock the screen or log out, but
 no shut down.

This is because of:

gdm to be updated in testing before it should have.

bug? I checked the python-support and debhelper BTS pages and didn't
see any recent python-support upload either, but would like this to be
fixed, could you confirm the issue has been reported already?

This is a limitation of dh_pysupport but it hasn’t been reported
otherwise yet. I’ll probably fix it in the next upload. It wasn’t done
in the first time because debhelper doesn’t provide any facility to
parse the control file.

Gnome tries to open the gdm_socket in /tmp/.gdm_socket and fails if it
can't be found. The default location in latest versions of gdm
 is /var/run/gdm_socket.

There's a fix in ubuntu, see bug 83810.

This patch has been integrated upstream, and gnome-session 2.20.2
uses /var/run/gdm_socket.

Could you please describe what is happening to you instead of trying to
provide your analysis?

Thanks for your report. Unfortunately this doesn’t tell us much. You
should try to run “apt-get install gnome-desktop-environment” and so on,
until you get a meaningful error message.

Bug#457383: libgtk2.0-0: should libcupsys2 be a recommends rather than a depends?

gtk ends up getting removed if the user tries to remove cups from
their system. this is because libgtk2.0-0 has a dependency on libcupsys2.
it seems like this is an undesirable effect because gtk should be
pretty much fully functional even without the printing system. if this
is the case, then the depends on libcupsys2 should be changed to a
 recommends instead.

This sounds like a reasonable request. I can see two ways to do this:
  * either we downgrade the dependencies for print backends with a
number of hacks;
  * or we move them to a libgtk2.0-printing package that is
recommended, and added to the metapackages.

I don’t like adding new packages much, but the second solution looks
saner. Of course, the drawback in both cases will come from the
countless “YOU HAS EATED MY PRINTER” but reports.

Bug#368916: Patch in debian package?

Seeing not much progress on this issue upstream, a patch on the Debian
side would be useful, I think. The variable actually should be
TERM=gnome-256color, which is included in the ncurses-term package. A
dependency on this package should be introduced together with the patch
(kterm depends on it as well, so that shouldn't be much of a problem).

This is feasible, but we’d need to test it on a wide scale, because it
could break a lot of things.

Daniel, do you know how the gnome-* terminfo entries were written? Are
they actually based on the vte capabilities? If they do, why not
shipping them directly in the vte packages?

Yesterday I upgraded my kernel and stupidly proceeded to hibernate as I
was running out of power. This resulted in the new kernel being unable
to load the s2disk images and them being lost. It would be nice if the
gnome-panel could detect this situation (kernel upgraded without
rebooting) and either prevent me from hibernating by disabling the
hibernate button or by popping up an error dialog explaining the
 situation.

This would indeed be nice, but for GNOME (gnome-power-manager, actually)
to do that, it would need hal to report it (which in turn may need a
decent error message from pm-utils).

Reassigning to the Utopia guys, who know better how this could be done.

 It seems that the line

some reason. This, in turn, kill quodlibet.

Downgrading to python-gnome2 2.20.0-1 fixes the problem.

This could be caused by the missing dependency on python-pyorbit, but
only if it has been automatically removed from your system during the
upgrade.

Does 2.20.1-2 work for you?

This behavior occurs from time to time, and seems to be caused by the
combination of two things:
 1. Some daemon not exiting when your session is closed;
evolution-data-server used to do that, but I thought it was
fixed. You can check what is still running by logging in a
console after logging out.
 2. In this case, bonobo-activation-server doesn’t work anymore for
some not understood reason.

The package is in section libs and as a result orphaner presents it

packages with detached debugging symbols is libdevel for libraries

I have fixed the section in our SVN repository, but it also needs to be

Bug#457564: gnome-control-center: fonts too big after the upgrade!

 Followup-For: Bug #457564

With the last version the fonts appear too big on one of my PC and
 normal on another one.
The PC on which the fonts appear normal has a screen resolution of
96 dpi. The other one (fonts too big) has a screen resolution of 113 dpi.
So it seems that the screen resolution is no longer taken in account with
this gnome-control-center version in opposition to the previous one (2.18).

This is exactly the opposite: the screen resolution, that used to be
ignored by GDM and forced to 96 DPI, is now correctly taken into
account.

If the screen resolution is wrongly detected, this may be a bug in the X
server, but most probably the behavior you are describing is expected:
the fonts used to look smaller or bigger than what they should, and now
they have the correct size you have to fix your font settings.
