Bug#845938: pulseaudio: bt headset: a2dp sink is not selectable - only hsp/hfp works

The problem is not limited to GDM, tho.

If you have several users logged in at the same time, only one of them
gets to use the bluetooth speaker, and once he gets it, the only way to
"free" the speaker (so another user can use it) seems to be to kill that
user's pulseaudio daemon.

The worst part is that the bluetooth speaker can easily get awarded to
a user who hasn't actually played any sound at all.

Currently, I work around this by manually removing bluetooth from the
pulseaudio config of all users except for the lucky one who is "more
deserving". But it's a real PITA.

Package: pulseaudio-equalizer
Version: 11.1-4
Severity: normal

I wanted to install pulseaudio-equalizer but bailed out when I saw this:
# aptitude install pulseaudio-equalizer
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  libqt4-designer{a} libqt4-help{a} libqt4-scripttools{a} libqt4-test{a}
  libqtassistantclient4{a} pulseaudio-equalizer python-qt4{a} python-qt4-dbus{a}

Afaik the plan is to remove qt4 from the archives before the Buster
release, so that means that this program/module should be upgraded to
Qt5.
That's also the reason I choose severity normal instead of wishlist.
(It would also be great if the depends is more restrictive as I see no
reason to install qt(4) designer/help/test packages while only runtime things
should be needed)

Luckily I found a commit on the GitHub mirror of the PulseAudio repo:
https://github.com/pulseaudio/pulseaudio/commit/480e0e74f43565d7ece72141666961ae8cc2ed75

titled: qpaeq: port to PyQt5

Added debian-qt-...@lists.debian.org as they track/manage the removal of
qt4 and it looks like this one was missed.

Cheers,
  Diederik

Bug#894489: pulseaudio-equalizer: Please upgrade to Qt5 instead of Qt4

2018-03-31 Thread Diederik de Haas
Package: pulseaudio-equalizer
Version: 11.1-4
Severity: normal

I wanted to install pulseaudio-equalizer but bailed out when I saw this:
# aptitude install pulseaudio-equalizer
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  libqt4-designer{a} libqt4-help{a} libqt4-scripttools{a} libqt4-test{a}
  libqtassistantclient4{a} pulseaudio-equalizer python-qt4{a} python-qt4-dbus{a}

Cheers,
  Diederik

2018-03-25 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Control: severity -1 serious

As announced [1], we are working to remove gconf from Debian. As part of this
process, I am now raising the severity of this bug.

Please try to port your package away from gconf. Otherwise, please consider
requesting that your package be removed from Debian to help us complete this
goal.

Very Urgent

2018-03-09 Thread Barrister Wilson Hart

Hello Good Friend

My Name is Barrister Wilson Hart, I am contacting you for a business
proposal, I need you to assist me to claim my late client Fund with a
bank here.

I will like to give you details for a better understanding, I have
been instructed by the Bank to present the next of kin to my deceased
client for the claim of his fund in the bank valued US$5,500,000.00
USD which he deposited with the Bank.

If this fund is not claimed, it will be transferred to the Central
bank treasury as unclaimed bill and will be shared among the board of
directors due to high level of corruption here and that will become
history.

There is nothing to worry about as everything is legal and devoid of
any illegal activities, it is my duty to provide the next of kin and
whosoever I approve as the next of kin will become the
beneficiary/next of kin to the fund and will inherit the money.
Let us be in this deal together for our mutual benefit.

I await your quick reply to enable us proceed immediately and if I
don’t hear from you within the next 7 days, I will assume that you are
not interested .

Thanks for your anticipated cooperation.

Bug#541538: duplicates and age of this bug

2018-03-09 Thread draeath
Hello,

it seems that there are several older bugs about this configuration:
#674935 and #674936 (duplicate submission)
#697119

These go back to *early 2012*

Can we maybe get this default configuration value adjusted? We're not
talking about a code patch, here.

Thanks.

It seems, that it was a hardwareproblem. My Laptopscreen got horizontal
lines and startet flickering around. So i dismantled my whole laptop and
build it together again.

Now, the flickering and the lines are gone. Seemd it was a loose contact...

And now pavucontrol starts also in wayland without segfault.

The bug can be closed.

But the question is, why segfaults it in wayland, but not in xorg??? How
is this possible, that a loose contact can segfault a program in
wayland, and not in xorg?

I can't reproduce the problem. Could you install the debug symbols of

Bug#808894: FIX: pulseaudio: No sound output to headphones even though headphones are detected and pavucontrol shows output.

2018-02-15 Thread Nate TeBlunthuis
Original reporter here.  I now believe my initial problem was a hardware
issue found in third gen Carbon X1s, not a bug in pulseaudio.

My original problem spontaneously fixed itself. I assumed that maybe the
issue went away. It just recurred today. I found this thread on the
Lenovo forums.

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X1-Carbon-3rd-Gen-Audio-Jack-Doesn-t-Work/td-p/2116099

The final comment in that thread suggests pushing down a connector on
the motherboard. I gave it a shot and it worked, my audio is back.

It appears that other people replied to this bug with their own audio
issues. I'm not a Debian developer, but I think this bug should be
closed. New issues might be created for the other problems, but I don't
know if any of them have provided enough information.

Thanks,

Bug#886782: pulseaudio: Audio playback is slow (sample rate mismatch?)

2018-02-03 Thread Andy Simpkins

Control: reassign -1 linux-image-4.9.0-5-amd64
Control: retitle -1 Audio playback is slow over DisplayPort on AMD Tahiti
hardware (sample rate mismatch?)
Control: version -1 4.9.65-3+deb9u2

On Tue, Jan 9, 2018 at 5:44 PM, Andy Simpkins wrote:

Package: pulseaudio

Dear Maintainer,

Following the upgrade to stretch sound on my system has stopped
working correctly. Instead of normal sounding playback, all audio now
plays back slower than it should.

This feels like it could be a sample rate issue. The only speakers on
my system are on my monitors and derive their audio over display port.
As part of the Squeeze upgrade I am aware that my Graphic Card drivers
got changed from the 'non-free ATI drivers to the recommended FLOSS
driver so it could be something there...

Could you try with the trivial resampler? That should rule out the
resampler as a source of the slowness.

The driver change sounds a lot more likely to be the cause. Could you
try booting with the jessie kernel to see if the slowness goes away?
Also relevant, is the slowness present when playing to any output, or
only on one (HDMI, internal, etc)?

Another avenue to try is to set default-fragment-size-msec to some
very high value, like 250ms.

Hi Again

Sorry for the long time to respond, I needed to get time with someone who knows
what they are doing so they can sit with me (many thanks Sledge)

OK so we have tried the following:
1) reverted back to the Jessie Kernel with free drivers, and that does not work with sound through the hdmi display port at all (the OLD fglrx catalyst non-free driver was what I used to use in Jessie
did however work)

2) tested analogue output (PC motherboard) and sound works correctly.

3) moving back to Stretch, 4.9.X kernel and we have also tested using the
Analogue sound port. this plays output correctly.

4) switching to hdmi / display port and the sound problem returns

5) when we try playback from different applications we get different results.
Playback through VLC is 'bursty': that is sound plays for a fraction of a second, stops, then starts again having skipped some of a track. playback is also SLOW as previously reported, it sounds like
VLC might be trying to re-sync.

When using Quod Libet the playback is just slow (without the skipping that VLC
appears to do to 'resync')

Finally using speaker-test with a 1khz sine output this to my ears also sounds
off pitch.

6) setting the resample method to trivial has no obvious effect (audio is still
slow)

7) setting default fragment size to 0.25s only changes the 'chunk' of audio
duration, playback speed is still slow, and it still pauses and skips before
playing the next 'chunk' of audio (using VLC)

Many thanks for your help and suggestions, this is now sounding like a driver
issue. We'll re-assign this to the appropriate linux-image package I'm using
and CC the kernel folks too.

Dear kernel folks - sorry, looks like this is your bug (and clearly upstream!).

Cheers

/Andy

I wonder, do udev and dbus ever fight? If so, what if any action does
pulseaudio take during any such fight? Perhaps a priority assignment is
done and in some instances the priority assignment turns out wrong for

There are two mechanisms by which pulseaudio coordinates device access.

The first one is the `uaccess` mechanism provided by udev. Pulseaudio
monitors the device for ACL changes, and releases it when the device
is no longer accessible to the user. This is how pulseaudio drops
access to the device when switching VT.

The second one is a dbus negotiation protocol. It is described
here[1]. Currently it is respected by at least pulseaudio, jack2 and
kodi. The pulseaudio support is implemented in src/modules/reserve*.

Bug#541538: pulseaudio: disable flat volumes

2018-01-31 Thread Roland Hieber
I came here because I was just playing [1] on headphones, and Firefox
seemed to think that it would be a good idea to set the master volume to
100%. My ears are still ringing. At least now I know what to do.

[1]: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:AFSK_1200_baud.ogg

The fix of changing "flat-volumes = yes" to "flat-volumes = no" in
/etc/pulse/daemon.conf seems to be fairly easy to implement, considering
the fact that this bug is blocking a great number of other bugs, and no
one here apparently has to say any word against it in the comments. Is
there something else blocking it?

Package: pulseaudio

Dear Maintainer,

pulseaudio callback is such penetrant that it brings down my desktop
environment.
The current situation is as running GSequencer with pulseaudio on a macbook pro
2016
it slows down the entire desktop. The mouse pointer starts to jump and no
precise
pointing anymore possible. Keyboard input is delayed, too. The input subsystem
went
mad.

The issue was introduced recently. Prior it worked seemless. There was some
modifications
in pulseaudio disturbing my application and desktop environment.

During early development of GSequencer, I experienced similar problems as
writing to
ALSA.

A software mustn't bring down the input subsystem.

Dear Maintainer,

Pulseaudio does not play well with Google Docs and speech recognition.
I have fiddled with settings and it now works a bit with Input Device

Why should it work with that, and not "internal microphone"?
I have an older computer and after fiddling for a long time I got it to work
very well, but I can't figure it out again.

were not originally meant to be machine readable, so if the
reason for removing your package seems to be nonsense, it is
probably the reporting script that got confused. Please check the
actual hints file before you complain about meaningless removals.

You mean in the module "speak" thread, right, I didn't think about
that. Actually, I've wondered why each and every module reimplements a
queueing system, more or less safely. I guess depending on the synthesis
it can be easier to write it one way or the other, but I believe we'd
gain from factorizing this.

I think we're dealing with option 4: not actually writing enough and
allowing the stream to drain.
The stream flags on the streams in question are generally 'drained' not
'corked'. I don't know if corked displays as a status in
list-sink-inputs, but if it does, we're not seeing that.

Auto suspend is enabled and these streams are sufficient to block
autosuspend. I get that by comparing the output of list-cards and
list-sinks when the streams are not present (and the card does
autosuspend) to the output when it is present.

Samuel>Speech dispatcher controls the audio output, it does not matter how
Samuel>many modules are there, speech dispatcher can still shut down the

So, I think you're aware of this, but just to make sure the broader we
are all on the same page:

Speech-dispatcher the program (the speech dispatcher server in the
source tree) doesn't do anything with audio.
The modules are not modules in the libtool or dll sense, and certainly
anyone coming from Pulseaudio would get the wrong impression thinking
about them.

Instead each speech-dispatcher module is its own process, forked and
execed from a different binary by the speech dispatcher server.

Speech dispatcher provides a set of audio libraries that get linked in
(statically?) to each module, including a pulse library.
Because of the structure of that module it's mostly assumed that the
module rather than the audio library will control when the stream is
open or not.
It looked tricky in the Jessie version of speech-dispatcher to change
that and for example close the Pulse stream without closing the
speech-dispatcher abstraction.
This is mostly true because speech-dispatcher uses blocking threads
rather than an event loop. The blocking happens in the module, *not*
the audio library.
So it's hard for the audio library to notice that nothing is going on.

The Stretch version seems better in this regard. It looks like there's
an interface for a module to communicate to an audio library that a
stream has stopped.

It might be relatively easy to use that abstraction to cork or entirely
close a Pulse stream.

It was definitely easy to modify the espeak module in the Jessie speech
dispatcher to entirely close its speech dispatcher audio abstraction
after an idle timeout.
It looks like doing something similar to the stretch Espeak-ng module
would be possible.

So, this is more of a Pulse question.
We know even dormant streams are sufficient to keep the audio card from
suspending.
I don't know if dormant streams have mixing overhead or impact the
volume algorithms being used.

This depends on what dormant means, I think. Dormant audio can mean:

1. Steady stream of 0s.
2. Pausing (corking in pulse-speak) the stream.
3. Closing the stream entirely.

We know option 3 has not been taken. We can try to determine if 1 or 2 with
the output of `pactl list` while the system is idle.

I'm not at my laptop so I can't check if we have it by default (we should),
but do you have suspend-on-idle module enabled? This information should
appear in the pactl list output.

IIRC, suspension cannot happen as long as any stream is connected, even
when corked.

Speech dispatcher controls the audio output, it does not matter how
many modules are there, speech dispatcher can still shut down the
corresponding audio streams.

Yeah.
That makes sense to me, but is different than your earlier answer of it
shouldn't matter because they are dormant.
If there's a benefit in suspending the card that we lose even with
dormant streams, then that's a cost.
I cannot imagine having sd_dummy be low latency be worth any cost at
all:-)
Similarly for non-active synthesizers: high latency to switch synths
seems entirely reasonable.

It looks like the pulse code in speech-dispatcher may make this easier
than it was with the old code.
I'll see what I can pull together and see what happens.
I'll try and open the feature request soon, but throwing together an
initial implementation may take a couple of months just because it's
competing with a lot of things.

It seems promising but I need more details. At which layer does this
happen? Does pulseaudio have hooks for this? I.e. espeakup would provide
hooks for relieving the audio device when pulseaudio feels the need to?
It seems to me that it's the kind of approach which would work.

> a little wrapper for the speakup daemons that sets up a

That can't work.

espeakup is not a screen reader that lives within a session like orca
does, for the simple reason that one needs it *before* logging in. In X,
one copes with it by having a lightdm/gdm user running the logging
session. In the console, there is no such thing, getty is running as
root.

Actually espeakup is not even a screen reader, the actual screen reading
happens in the kernel, and espeakup is just a deamon which basically
reads text from /dev/softsynthu and uses the audio card to synthesize
it. espeakup should be fine with the card being taken away, because it
probably means that the console got switched to some X session, and thus
the in-kernel screen reader won't have anything to say anyway.

Yes, because the drivers want to be ready to emit sound very quickly.
But to me it makes sense that e.g. after one minute or such speech
dispatcher shuts down its stream to let the card get idle, at the
expense of a little extra latency to reopen it again, but that should be
hardly noticeable: it's only during work that one notices latency.

It's like screen saving: one is used to have to wait a bit for the
screen to wake up after having left the system idle for some time.

Orca, Speech-dispatcher and power management

2018-01-06 Thread Sam Hartman

I'd appreciate being copied on replies.

hi.

A while ago I was looking at the power usage of our GUI screen reader
stack. I came back to that project recently.

I'm running stock stretch with Orca. I'm running pulseaudio and
speech-dispatcher both as user processes.

I was initially suspicious of the power used by the accessibility stack
because speech-dispatcher is very heavy-handed in how it interacts with
Pulse.
On my system, it starts up sd_generic, sd_espeak_ng and sd_dummy.
Each of these opens an audio stream with Pulse for the entire lifetime
of the process.

It seemed excessive to have that many processes running when all I want
is Espeak.

Another red (or at least bright yellow) flag is that the sound card can
never auto suspend. That seemed concerning.

Past experiments with the Jesse pulseaudio and speech-dispatcher
suggested that the power usage was quite significant. I wrote a local
patch that closed the sd_espeak pulse stream after seven seconds of
inactivity.
I did not get any significant clicking from such a patch.

On Jesse that seemed to get me significantly better battery life.
Certainly the powertop output was more promising. Battery usage was
down as well as wakeups/second.

On Stretch, things seem to be better without a patch. Several streams
are still opened. Pulse still never auto-suspends the audio card.

I sshed into the machine remotely and compared power usage when I ran
pacmd suspend 1 (force suspend of the audio card) against what I got
with the audio card running.

Things seem to be significantly better than what I remember from
Jessie. The estimated power draw from powertop can be as low as about
3.6W with pulse enabled and 3.2W with it suspended.
It looks like it takes an hour of battery life or so to have pulse
running with streams present and no actual sound being sent to these
streams.

It also looks like speech-dispatcher may have tried to improve things.
It looks like sd_espeak_ng has a better concept of a stopped stream.

That said, there are a couple of concerning factors. With Pulse streams
present, pulse is responsible for about 230 additional powertop wakeups
per second.
It ends up being the top CPU utilization, although I think it stays down
under 1ms/second.

Clearly, this gets lost in the noise if the system is active. If you're
actually interacting with GUI applications, the power used by the GUI,
Orca, and AT-SPI (Orca and AT-SPI are surprisingly greedy) dwarfs the
power used by Pulse and speech-dispatcher.

However, what I'm worried about is idle power usage. There are a lot of
times where my laptop will be sitting on the table idle for 15 minutes
while I'm talking. The lower power usage at idle goes, the longer it
will last under work loads I care a lot about.

I'd like to figure out whether:

* Will limiting the number of streams speech-dispatcher opens have any
significant improvement. Are there actual costs to having the
sd_generic and sd_dummy streams open even when they are unneeded?

* Would it be worth the complexity to close the speech dispatcher
streams after a period of inactivity?

Has anyone else looked at stuff like this? Would anyone be interested
in working with me on accessibility power usage?

Thanks for your consideration,

--Sam

I was just thinking about accessibility in general, AIUI the problem
is generally known since quite a long time, and AFAIK some discussions
happened somewhere on some pulseaudio lists but without actual
conclusions and solutions, while this does not seem to be a so technical
issue like Debian packaging is, so a lot of people could have led the

What do you think about this solution?
It seems it's not only a accessibility issue because a computer could be
used by multiple users and in some situations sighted users encounter
this problem also.

In the end, I have no idea how this situation is supposed to work, and
for now I have just made the espeakup d-i script *purge* pulseaudio,

saying one could use a system-mode daemon, but upstream doesn't want
that. Normally, espeakup could have its own pulseaudio server, playing
well along pulseaudio servers of other users, but I failed to get

I'm not sure removing PulseAudio is a good idea. As I understand New

Re: pulseaudio and espeakup

2017-12-30 Thread Jude DaShiell
If pulseaudio actually did what pulseaudio was advertised as doing,
anything that wanted sound resources would have to go through pulseaudio
and play nicely with pulseaudio to get those sound resources. As things
stand, such is not yet the case.

Does Espeakup really "take" the device? ALSA does support mixing these days and
I would be surprised if Espeakup would grab the whole device. That would mean

Sorry for the nitpicking, but I think that's important here.

2017-12-29 Thread Jude DaShiell
When I start running espeakup then run emacspeak or speechd-el and then
return to espeakup the espeakup speech is trashed and barely
understandable. This all can happen on the text console with no need
whatever to touch graphics interface. Neither running any of the
alternative screen readers like flite or festival helps this situation
either. For those with usb or serial or parallel speech synthesizers
perhaps outsourcing some of this work to those synthesizers might help a
little but that does nothing for those who only have a sound card.

Hello,

Incompatibility between espeakup and pulseaudio is a recurring issue
which AIUI has never actually been settled (or nobody took the time to
implement a solution in Debian).

This is a real pain for blind users, there are loads of reports that
Debian/Ubuntu systems are not accessible, or accessible only in text
mode, or accessible only in graphical mode, none of which is an
acceptable situation.

In summary:

- espeakup is a speech synthesis for the in-kernel speakup screen
reader.

- espeakup runs as a background daemon which essentially reads
/dev/softsynth and uses libespeak-ng to emit speech.

- It can be made to run as non-root user by adding udev rules for
/dev/softsynth to be accessible for it.

- libespeak-ng is able to use pulseaudio

BUT

- currently espeakup runs as root, and then takes over the ALSA device.
orca inside lightdm or gdm then can't emit its output (unless by luck
espeakup didn't say anything at boot, and then pulseaudio inside the
lightdm/gdm session manages to get the device, but then it's espeakup
which can't get the device).

- espeakup could be made to run as normal user, but then it seems its
pulseaudio server can't access audio, I guess that's because consolekit
doesn't consider it to be running "on the console"?

- espeakup and lightdm/gdm could be given audio group access, but then
there are two competing pulseaudio servers, and only the first one seems
to actually manage to emit sound.

In the end, I have no idea how this situation is supposed to work, and
for now I have just made the espeakup d-i script *purge* pulseaudio,
to get things working. Of course I can see various documentations
saying one could use a system-mode daemon, but upstream doesn't want
that. Normally, espeakup could have its own pulseaudio server, playing
well along pulseaudio servers of other users, but I failed to get
something working.

Any thoughts?

We really need to fix this (and I'm really depressed that it seems
nobody took the time to manage to work out a solution).

Samuel

As announced [1], we do not intend to release Debian 10 "Buster" with
the old libgnome (and related) libraries. These libraries have been
deprecated and unmaintained for several years.

Your package has an apparently unnecessary Build-Depends on libglademm-
