Msn

2009-12-14 Thread Mirjan Koolen
Since a couple of days pidgin does not support MSN anymore. I can't connect
MSN in Pidgin anymore.

Is this problem known at support?

Thanks.

If you go to 'Accounts - Manage Accounts' you can enable/disable
individual accounts. That said, you can enable them all at once too.

If you're not using the latest version (2.6.4), upgrade.

You're going to have to be more specific about the problem you're having.

Which version of Pidgin are you using? (Help-About will tell you this)

Which protocol (AIM/ICQ/Yahoo/MSN/etc) are you using?

What do you mean by on exchange?

This has been discussed before and changes were made to just about all the
places where one could find the mailing list address.

If there's any way you think it could be clearer, please provide SPECIFIC
suggestions, instead of a vague It should be made clearer.

OK, I will admit I had not looked, because I know this sort of thing
already. But many recent Pidgin users apparently don't.

OK, well my specific suggestion would be to put capitalized text in the
description of the support list address stating not to post user IDs or
passwords in any mail sent to that address.

I see it already shows in bold text that it is a *public* mailing list,
I can confidently say that I have spoken to many people who do not know
what that means without it being explained to them, so perhaps a short
sentence saying that any message they send to it is read by a large
number of people and that IM user IDs and passwords MUST not be sent to
the list.

Is that clear enough?

I don't know, I assume all mailing lists I join are public. Just safe
that way. And even if it wasn't a public mailing list with tons of
subscribers, you STILL shouldn't give your PW and login to ANYONE. Every
major portal and service tells you to never give out your pw to anyone
and says that no one on their staff will ever ask for your password.

I'm afraid that a lot of people have no concept of security at all,
they do not understand what a mailing list is or how it works, they do
not realise that people can use their account if they give out their
user ID and password.

Sorry, that's just the way that many people are.

Re: I am installing Pidgin in Firefox. ????

2009-12-14 Thread Michael Secord

I'm going to add to this, because I think this is where the issue arises.

There are a lot of users who won't even /look/ in the help or FAQ for an
address to contact Pidgin at. Most people assume that there is a
support@pidgin.im address and therefore assume it's private.

My only recommendation would be to somehow have a /filter/ email of some
sort, that when a user NOT subscribed to the list emails it, they are
warned that this is a public email list and then given an option to
continue sending the email, to cancel the email, or to join the list.

I've seen lists done in a similar manner, and I believe this might be a
viable solution (though I'm not sure if the current list software
supports it).

Annoyed.

If I am typing in a conversation window and someone
else messages me I'm pulled out of that conversation window and into the one
with a new message. I'm not sure if this is a design thing or an actual problem

This is a function of 'stealing focus' [ sounds like a M$ O/S

difficult, if not impossible, to assist. :-\

You don't need to logout of one account to use another; it can give you
the union of all your buddy lists all online at the same time.

Emails are not formal business letters, whatever businesses may want.
RFC1855 says there should be an address here, but, in a world of spam,
that is no longer good advice, as archive address hiding may not work.
