[Bug 850264] Re: given a foreign architecture of i386 on amd64 machine, and an outdated libc, apt tries to remove libc-bin

2011-12-09 Thread Martin Pitt
** Description changed:

- Today I added i386 as a foreign architecture and then tried to install
- something with apt, but was presented with a very bad plan:
+ This reproducer was verified to work in the live system of current
+ precise-dailies. It doesn't work on an installed system where libc6:i386
+ is already installed!
+
+ 1. Drop libc6-dev:
+sudo dpkg -P libc6-dev
+
+ 2. Downgrade to a previous libc:
+
+ wget
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/eglibc/2.13-20ubuntu9/+build/2979954/+files/libc-bin_2.13-20ubuntu9_amd64.deb

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/eglibc/2.13-20ubuntu9/+build/2979954/+files/libc6_2.13-20ubuntu9_amd64.deb
+ sudo dpkg -i libc*.bin
+
+ 3. Ensure apt is consistent:
+
+ sudo apt-get install -f
+
+ should not complain about anything.
+
+ 4. Install i386 package:
+
+ sudo apt-get install cpp:i386
+
+ This will propose to remove libc-bin and install the newer version of
+ libc-bin:i386 instead.
+
+ It seems that apt prefers install the foreign arch libc6-bin:i386 over
+ upgrading the native arch libc6-bin to the current version?

[Bug 885102] Re: Recovering from hibernate causes reboot

2011-12-09 Thread Kiva Laatikko
Sorry I haven't had time for this as this occurs on my work computer. I
quickly tested the problem again and it seems that it is fixed by some
kernel update. For 3.0.0-13-generic the hibernate seems to work now.

** Description changed:

  What I expected:
Computer wakes up after hibernate normally and everything is as it was before
hibernating.

  What happened:
  When putting computer into hibernate:
ata7.01 failed to resume link (SControl0)
ata7.02 failed to resume link (SControl0)
ata7.03 failed to resume link (SControl0)
ata7.04 failed to resume link (SControl0)
  is printed.

Powering up after hibernate does something (reads hard disk at least),
but shows only a blank screen. After a while the computer reboots
normally (as if it was never hibernated) and everything that was going
  on before hibernating is lost.

[Bug 893821] Re: Shell expansion may allow privilege boundary crossing

2011-12-09 Thread Ganton
sbeattie also pointed out that $(pidof kded4) returning
 multiple pids could be problematic.
And that's true.

For example, if I use ssh to access a remote machine, which is using KDE:
ganton@t1:~$ pidof kded4
12511 1382
those were two results returned.

For more information:
ganton@t1:~$ ps aux | grep [1]2511
root 12511 0.0 0.8 79700 5300 ?SDec06 0:07 kdeinit4:
kded4 [kdeinit]
ganton@t1:~$ ps aux | grep [1]382
ganton1382 0.0 7.1 266424 45632 ?Sl Dec06 0:43
kdeinit4: kded4 [kdeinit]
we see that there are two process named kded4, one for root and another for
the user ganton.

But if something like pgrep -u is used:
ganton@t1:~$ pgrep kded4 -u $USER
1382
there is no two results returned problem.

I suggest changing those pidof that appear in the code (for example,
in the patch).

Thanks for the work!

[Bug 901902] Re: Installation creates too many partitions

2011-12-09 Thread YannUbuntu
Hi Kim

I think you had 2 bugs:
- first is that Windows showed 5 partitions, all primary, because normally a
disk can contain only 4 primary partitions.
- second is that GRUB install failed. For other people information, but I add a
detail that you told me by email :

 - when I got access to Windows I removed the two partitions that Ubuntu had
 created
 - I then set about reinstalling Ubuntu, however when it came to the
partitioning choices, I made these manually
 - I asked for a 5Gb swap and a 60Gb / drive
 - the install proceeded to the point where GRUB was installing, then stalled

[Bug 783950] Re: simple-scan crashes EPSON Office ADF scanners, fails with hp ADF scanners

2011-12-09 Thread Michael Nagel
Hi Matthias, thanks for your reply and you are absolutely right. I am
currently making an effort to work through the massive backlog of bug
reports and improve response time dramatically.

However manpower really is an issue here, and in particular there is
only one person (Robert Ancell) working on the code.

[Bug 902074] [NEW] Growl-like indicator bubble clips outside the workspace area when it is first shown after logging in

2011-12-09 Thread RK
Public bug reported:

I am using the Gnome3-classic desktop environment, and I have noticed a
minor bug on my compter. The first time the indicator bubble (that
looks like the Growl indicator bubbles on Mac) in the top right corner
(after logging in), it clips outside the workspace. About 80% of the
bubble is visible, and the rest is outside the workspace. When the
indicator bubble is visible next, and subsequent times, it does not clip
outside.

I am attaching an image showing the effect (with my username and the
contents of the bubble grayed out).

[Bug 902075] [NEW] [Realtek ALC888] Playback problem

2011-12-09 Thread Jon Flowers
Public bug reported:

Sound plays initially on VLC, Movie player etc but cuts out after a time
anything from ten to thirty minutes for no apparent reason. The only
thing I can do to restore the sound is to close the application and
reopen the file. The problem has only arisen recently. Everything used
to work fine until a couple of weeks ago so it looks like an update may
have caused it.

[Bug 884152] Re: Error: Marking the upgrade (from 11.04 to 11.10) - unresolved package dependencies

2011-12-09 Thread Cobalt
After my previous comment, I realized I had not run apt-get update and apt-get
upgrade, so I did that on the command line and a lot of updates were installed.
Still, after restarting
sudo ppa-purge ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa gives the same warning as before.
Warning: Could not find package list for PPA: xorg-edgers ppa
And the update manager gives the same error.

rpr nospam, your problem does not seem to be a driver problem but a
problem of the communication between computer and printer via USB.

Can you make sure that your system is completely updated?

Can someone at HP look into this? There seems to be a problem with the
hp CUPS backend.

[Bug 902077] [NEW] lucid-precise upgrade failure due to libdrm-nouveau1a Conflicts:

This is probably due to

To ease apt's job, this should be something like

Replaces: libdrm-nouveau1

First of all:
I 've now version 3.2.1 of SimpleScan and my OS is of now:

the scanning after each page, but then the result is not one file with
more pages: Each scan then becomes a file.

[Bug 344588]

2011-12-09 Thread Iuga Marian Silviu
I am attaching an example of a file that the Xine engine cannot play,
but Winamp with Winamp AC3 Filter 1.01a with integrated dts support can.

did you delete the example ?

 winealsa does support 6channels unoffically

 http://cvs.winehq.org/patch.py?id=13407

I did not delete the example. The file has 5 MB and was not attached
when I sent the message. Now I will use a public Ubuntu One link for the
example:

http://ubuntuone.com/3O64HW4V1L9LxpFbRwNkqH

The example has sounds of lighting a match on each 5.1 speaker, and a seventh
match heard on all speakers.
I succesfully played this in Debian Gnu/Linux on 5.1 speakers only with Amarok
with libxine1-ffmpeg installed and in Windows with Winamp having Winamp AC3
Filter plugin.

I thank you for your good work.

+ SRU information
+
+ [Impact]
+ The bug always occurs on Ubuntu installations in case the libmono-i18n4.0-all
package has not been installed and prevents OpenBVE from being run. Severity
set to medium as the bug severly impacts a non-core application, but a
workaround is present (see Test Case section).
+ Justification for backporting: fixing the missing dependency problem allows
the users to install and run OpenBVE in a straightforward way without searching
for workarounds on the Internet and installing the missing package manually.
+
+ [Development Fix] section with an explanation of how the bug has been
addressed in the development branch, including the relevant version numbers of
packages modified in order to implement the fix.
+ The openbve package has been modified by including the missing dependency
(libmono-i18n4.0-all) in the Depends: section of the debian/control file.
+ Number of modified packages: 1 (openbve - original version:
1.2.10.0-0ubuntu2, new version: 1.2.10.0-0ubuntu3)
+
+ [Stable Fix]
+ The fix is supplied as a debdiff against the original version of OpenBVE in
comment #9:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openbve/+bug/86/+attachment/2578094/+files/openbve_1.2.10.0-0ubuntu3.debdiff
+
+ [Test Case]
+ 1) Start from a clean Ubuntu installation. Make sure that the
libmono-i18n4.0-all package is not installed on the system.
+ 2) Install OpenBVE by opening a terminal and running:
+ sudo apt-get install openbve
+ 3) Try running OpenBVE from the terminal with the command:
+ openbve
+ The program should display the error message shown at the top of this
description (System.NotSupportedException: CodePage 37 not supported) in the
terminal itself and the Mono interpreter (cli process) should start looping,
eating a single CPU core. The main OpenBVE window should not be shown.
+ 4) Kill the cli process.
+ 5) Install the updated package. apt-get should prompt you to install the
missing dependency libmono-i18n4.0-all as well.
+ 6) Try running openbve again from the terminal: the program should run and
display the main OpenBVE window.
+
+ A screenshot of the main OpenBVE windows is provided by the author of
+ the program at http://trainsimframework.org/common/screen_z1.jpg.
+ Please note that, in the Ubuntu version, the command buttons on the left
+ are replaced by option buttons; the rest of the window is the same.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ No potential regressions should occur in OpenBVE itself as no code has been
changed. It's possible, however, that other badly-written Mono/.NET programs
might be affected by the installation of the new Mono library.

[Bug 861140] Re: unity 3d display switch does not work

2011-12-09 Thread Mahendra
Hi Omer,

Thanks for the info. I switched to Unity/3D again and saw this
behaviour.

* First attempt at switching display - did NOT work. Screens went blank and
after the timeout of 15seconds, it came back to old state.
* I hit on 'Apply' again. On this attempt, the display switch WORKED.
Everything is working fine.

I did that about 3 hours back and could not try it again multiple times.
Will test it again a few times at the end of the day today and update you.

[Bug 902080] [NEW] LibreWriter crashes when a copied graph from LibreCalc is pasted in, and then an attempt is made to save the document.

2011-12-09 Thread Mark Glade
Public bug reported:

Simple line plots created in Libre Calc are selected and copied then
pasted into Libre Writer and when the Libre Writer document is then
saved it crashes the entire LibreOffice application. I am having to
screen shot each of my graphs for my report, and I thought maybe this
issue could be addressed to save some others who may be having this
issue as well. Thank you for all the hard work that has gone into all
this awesomeness I so freely enjoy. I truly am a very grateful user,
and I am not complaining, just trying to help. The error log has been
attached to this bug. Thank you again!

Re: [Bug 901880] [NEW] installation of original package from www.dropbox.com failed - Dropbox works

2011-12-09 Thread Raphaël Hertzog
On Thu, 08 Dec 2011, LAZA wrote:
I got an installation of Xubuntu 11.10 but had to reinstall it, /home has an
extra partition so the dropbox folder was kept.
After the installation everything worked fine and i wanted to install dropbox.
The installation of the original package from Synaptic worked but the
download of the daemon failed in 4 cases and i had to run:

 sudo dpkg --configure -a

 to repair the packages.

And this worked?

I uninstalled every time the package and tried it again with the package
 from the dropbox website.

Please don't report problems related to the dropbox package provided by
dropbox, I only control the Ubuntu package, not the dropbox one.

And make sure to purge the package when you uninstall it to clean up
everything.

 - with gdebi i got this message twice:

Fehler: Zerstört vorhandenes Paket »nautilus-dropbox« (Konflikt:
 nautilus-dropbox ( ))

What does dpkg -s nautilus-dropbox on a terminal says?

Unstallation und reinstallation didn't solve the problem.

What problem exactly ?

BUT: After the third try i ignored the problem and the Dropbox icon
 appeared and synchronized my folders!

The package provided by dropbox install binaries in your /home and if you
installed an autostart script that point to those binaries (which can be
done with dropbox autostart) then the it might run even if the package
is not correctly installed/configured.

2011-12-09 Thread Micah Gersten
Thank you for trying to fix a bug in a stable release of Ubuntu. I'm
unsubscribing ubuntu-sponsors for the moment. Per
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates, the oneiric debdiff should
be the smallest change possible to fix this package. Also, you need to
target oneiric-proposed instead of oneiric in the changelog. Please
resubscribe ubuntu-sponsors once a new debdiff has been attached that
addresses these issues.

[Bug 733349] Re: Minimize Application's Windows upon clicking its Launcher Icon

2011-12-09 Thread sabby7890
As Ubuntu Design Team says - it's only to make the desktop feel
consistent. They're worried about what should happen when user clicks on
icon which has two windows. This won't minimize and will make users feel
confused.

But, I simply can't understand HOW this will confuse users. Unity should
allow minimizing ONLY when there's ONE window underneath the icon;
simply - do something instead of doing absolutely nothing. When there
are two windows, Unity currently shows spread and that's perfect. This
is simply reducing usability a lot. Hope the developers will notice
that.

[Bug 902085] [NEW] Libreoffice Calc conditional formatting error

2011-12-09 Thread Wolf Rogner
Public bug reported:

Conditional formatting in LibreOffice does not work correctly.

This error was corrected in OpenOffice and reappeared in LibreOffice.

Test:

Enter a cell value of 1 and a value of 2 in the next value
Mark 3 cells (on including no value)
Conditional format 1 to background green, 2 to background red and empty to
background gray.

Use equal to, use less than or greater than, it does not work.

What works is that the cell gets coloured green if you say: not equal
to: 1

However, combining negatives does not work either.

[Bug 894048] Re: Keyboard accelerators not working correctly in Firefox and Thunderbird after upgrade from 11.04 (Natty) to 11.10 (Oneiric)

2011-12-09 Thread Oliver Schonrock
Yes, can confirm that this bug exists for me too..and yes it is quite
frustrating for those of us that like menu access keys and dislike mice.
Doug Morses discription is very precise and matches what I see.

I can also note that the global menu in chromium does not seem support
access keys at all? After window first loaded or at any time?

2011-12-09 Thread Bib
I should have use ubuntu-bug storage as found in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage#Hardware_Malfunctions
Hardware Malfunctions:
If a piece of hardware is malfunctioning, typically the problem package is the
kernel. However, if the problem is with a storage device (internal or external)
in 9.10 Karmic Koala or above, problems should be reported with ubuntu-bug
storage. (If triaging, see the Use Storage Symptom standard reply.)
because the issue exists in this computer since Karmic Koala included (worked
up to Jaunty Jackalope). Several fresh installations showed this is sure, and
when using GRUB-legacy in Karmic and above make resume work again. Using the
default GRUB2 in Karmic and above breaks resume. (no problems with thaw from
hibernate)

[Bug 877776] Re: openbve does not depend on the required package libmono-i18n4.0-all

2011-12-09 Thread Alessandro Menti
This debdiff contains just the required modifications (libmono-
i18n4.0-all package included as dependency instead of libmono-
i18n4.0-all).

** Patch added: Debdiff for inclusion in oneiric-proposed

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/oneiric/+source/openbve/+bug/86/+attachment/2625704/+files/openbve_1.2.10.0-0ubuntu2.1.debdiff

  SRU information

  [Impact]
The bug always occurs on Ubuntu installations in case the libmono-i18n4.0-all
package has not been installed and prevents OpenBVE from being run. Severity
set to medium as the bug severly impacts a non-core application, but a
workaround is present (see Test Case section).
Justification for backporting: fixing the missing dependency problem allows
the users to install and run OpenBVE in a straightforward way without searching
for workarounds on the Internet and installing the missing package manually.

  [Development Fix]
The openbve package has been modified by including the missing dependency
(libmono-i18n4.0-all) in the Depends: section of the debian/control file.
Number of modified packages: 1 (openbve - original version:
1.2.10.0-0ubuntu2, new version: 1.2.10.0-0ubuntu3)

  [Stable Fix]
- The fix is supplied as a debdiff against the original version of OpenBVE in
comment #9:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openbve/+bug/86/+attachment/2578094/+files/openbve_1.2.10.0-0ubuntu3.debdiff

  [Test Case]
  1) Start from a clean Ubuntu installation. Make sure that the
libmono-i18n4.0-all package is not installed on the system.
  2) Install OpenBVE by opening a terminal and running:
  sudo apt-get install openbve
  3) Try running OpenBVE from the terminal with the command:
  openbve
The program should display the error message shown at the top of this
description (System.NotSupportedException: CodePage 37 not supported) in the
terminal itself and the Mono interpreter (cli process) should start looping,
eating a single CPU core. The main OpenBVE window should not be shown.
  4) Kill the cli process.
  5) Install the updated package. apt-get should prompt you to install the
missing dependency libmono-i18n4.0-all as well.
  6) Try running openbve again from the terminal: the program should run and
display the main OpenBVE window.

A screenshot of the main OpenBVE windows is provided by the author of
  the program at http://trainsimframework.org/common/screen_z1.jpg.
Please note that, in the Ubuntu version, the command buttons on the left
are replaced by option buttons; the rest of the window is the same.

  [Regression Potential]
No potential regressions should occur in OpenBVE itself as no code has been
changed. It's possible, however, that other badly-written Mono/.NET programs
might be affected by the installation of the new Mono library.

[Bug 902077] Re: lucid-precise upgrade holds back X.org video drivers

2011-12-09 Thread Martin Pitt
So, the reason is that xserver-xorg-video-{nv,v4l} do not exist any
more, and thus it can't get rid of the xserver-xorg-video-6 provides.
For that we need to explicitly conflict to these two to clean these up
on upgrade. I propose that -nouveau conflicts: -nv, and -vesa Conflicts:
-v4l. Adding them to -video-all also works, but that wouldn't fix the
upgrade for people who removed -video-all and only have a few drivers
installed.

These two extra Conflicts: will fix the upgrade when universe is
enabled. If only main and restricted are enabled, the upgrade still
fails because a bunch of the older drivers went to universe. I still
need to think about/discuss what to do there.

[Bug 902077] Re: lucid-precise upgrade holds back X.org video drivers

2011-12-09 Thread Martin Pitt
For the case where only main is enabled, we need to add a quirk to the
release upgrader: If universe is not enabled, remove these packages:

  xserver-xorg-video-apm
  xserver-xorg-video-ark
  xserver-xorg-video-chips
  xserver-xorg-video-i128
  xserver-xorg-video-rendition
  xserver-xorg-video-s3virge
  xserver-xorg-video-tseng
  xserver-xorg-video-voodoo

These driverse went to universe since lucid. As lucid's -video-all
depends on them, we probalby need to do this:

[Bug 902084] Re: won't resume from suspend to ram

2011-12-09 Thread Bib
However when I use ubuntu-bug storage then select other, I get Please use
ubuntu-bug packagename to report a bug against the particular package and
here I can't select kernel to submit the bug.
Other choices seem not relevant : this is not a removable device to be mounted
automatically, it is my internal boot HDD IDE, and the choice Internal hard
disk partition cannot be mounted manually could be the good one as I have not
even a display on resume and keyboard seems not functionnal too, no led NumLock
CapsLock Scroll is lighting when corresponding keys are hitten.

[Bug 902096] [NEW] precise alpha 1 debian-installer static network does not support empty gateway

2011-12-09 Thread Ralf Spenneberg
Public bug reported:

When installing Precise Alpha 1 the debian-installer requires a gateway
when configuring static network.

When I use an empty string the Installer shows an error: gateway not
reachable.

I would like to install debian in a network without gateway.

[Bug 902095] [NEW] Copying remaining time estimate is not accurate when doing multiple copies

2011-12-09 Thread Pablo Almeida
Public bug reported:

When you copy two files (or two set of files) from or to the same disk
separately, so that you have two copying progress bars and estimates and
one copying process is dealing with an amount of data larger than the
other, nautilus calculates the estimate as if both copying processes
were going to be running simultaneously until copying is complete, which
is not true. Once the smaller set of files finishes, the larger one will
get its full speed back and finish sooner than the first estimate
actually predicted.

My suggestion: Nautilus should be aware that the second file copy is
slowing the first one down, so it should calculate the first's estimate
as something like: estimate for the smaller set of files copy to
finish + estimate time to copy the amount of data that will be left
when the second process ends at both processes speed combined.

Although this approach may look too simplistic, I think it's better than
the rather pessimistic approach we're using right now.
