[Bug 1725062] Re: Network Manager Applet can't connect to VPN, but nmtui does

2017-10-29 Thread jingles
heytimc, i blocked pptp connection on my router and got the same syslog errors.
So your problem is some kind of network issue. It could be your router
firewall, or ISP firewall or maybe your IT department changed something or
blocking it. I can only quess.
As a confirmation of my words - open gnome-terminal, type nmtui, choose connect
and select your VPN connect - if will fail too, so it means it's a network
issue.

[Bug 1716633] Re: /usr/bin/gnome-software:11:g_str_equal:g_hash_table_lookup_node:g_hash_table_insert_internal:find_snaps:gs_plugin_add_popular

2017-10-29 Thread Robert Ancell
I thought that each plugin was only accessed by the same thread, but it
turns out this is not the case. This crash seems to be due to these
multiple threads accessing the snap cache. This is now protected with a
lock.

** Description changed:

- Potentially a regression introduced by gnome-software
- 3.20.5-0ubuntu0.16.04.6
+ [Impact]
+ GNOME Software has a cache that can be accessed by multiple threads. This can
cause GNOME Software to crash. This seems to have been caused by adding support
for featured snaps (bug 1663097) as the popular, featured and installed snaps
are all requested on different threads.

- The Ubuntu Error Tracker has been receiving reports about a problem regarding
gnome-software. This problem was most recently seen with package version
3.22.7-0ubuntu3.17.04.7, the problem page at
https://errors.ubuntu.com/problem/b8d914cec850474446873c5a60feba99b1d498d9
contains more details, including versions of packages affected, stacktrace or
traceback, and individual crash reports.
- If you do not have access to the Ubuntu Error Tracker and are a software
developer, you can request it at http://forms.canonical.com/reports/.
+ [Test Case]
+ Since this is a random crash there's not a good test case. Could be checked
by looking at errors.ubuntu.com crash reports or repeated restarts of GNOME
Software to see if it crashes on startup.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ Solution is to add a lock around this cache. Some risk of breaking related
code.

** Summary changed:

-
/usr/bin/gnome-software:11:g_str_equal:g_hash_table_lookup_node:g_hash_table_insert_internal:find_snaps:gs_plugin_add_popular
+ Installed, popular and featured snaps are loaded in parallel threads can crash

Interesting. I get complete freezes when wifi is enabled and these
errors appear. With wifi disables, and modules not loaded, it works ok.

[Bug 1728461] [NEW] Python GC destroys PyGObject with external references

2017-10-29 Thread Cédric Bellegarde
Public bug reported:

PyGObject traverses its closures in tp_traverse, but the lifetime of the
closures
is tied to the lifetime of the GObject and not the wrapper. This confuses
the Python GC when it sees a ref cycle and tries to break it up with tp_clear.
Since tp_clear will not invalidate the closure and only invalidate the Python
wrapper the closure callback gets called with the now cleared/invalid object.

This bug make python gtk programs to segfault randomly.

Patch available here:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=731501

Should apply to 3.24 or be easily backported: one line patch adding a if
statement.

[Bug 378068] Re: Unsatisfactory Quality on Samsung CLP-315 Color Laser Printer (foomatic)

2017-10-29 Thread Patrick Wigmore
OK, so testing confirms that, for me, this issue is present upstream.

More careful reading leads me to believe that the poor quality printouts
with foo2qpdl are actually due to a known issue with Ghostscript 9+. See
https://bugs.ghostscript.com/show_bug.cgi?id=696179

foo2qpdl documents the problem here:
http://foo2qpdl.rkkda.com/INSTALL (under "GHOSTSCRIPT BUGS" section heading)
http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/forum/read.php?63,3189

The suggested workaround is to use Ghostscript 8.71 but I was unable to
get that to compile on Ubuntu 16.04.

[Bug 1690485] Re: openssh-server SIGSYS with 'UsePrivilegeSeparation sandbox'

2017-10-29 Thread Colin Watson
This looks very weird. If it's calling EVP_Cipher, that should go
through OpenSSL; it's conceivable that it might end up in libkeyutils
via the Kerberos libraries, sure, but a simple cipher call should
already have everything it needs; and libkeyutils doesn't use D-Bus.

Could you attach /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/tls/libkeyutils.so.1 so that I
can see if I can make anything out of the offsets in your perf output?

[Bug 1728455] [NEW] Inputting in Chrome URL Bar Triggering UI Freeze, pegged CPU and Major Memory Leak

2017-10-29 Thread Victorzwl
Public bug reported:

OS: Ubuntu 17.10 (Linux weilong-Ubuntu 4.13.0-16-generic #19-Ubuntu SMP
Wed Oct 11 18:35:14 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux)

GNOME version: GNOME Shell 3.26.1
Chrome version: Version 62.0.3202.75 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Description:

This may very likely have something to do with my Chinese input method
(iBus). I encounter this consistently while the system input method is
Chinese (WubiHaifeng86) but the mode within the input method is English.

Inputting in Chrome URL bar is triggering UI freeze and major memory
meak. The whole UI freezes and won't respond to either mouse or
keyboard. Can't switch to console by Ctrl+Alt+Fx. Was able to ssh in
from another machine and gather information.

Reproduce Steps:

1. Switch system input method to Chinese (WubiHaifeng86)
2. Switch to English inputting mode (while system input method is still
Chinese).
3. Open Chrome
4. Input some characters in URL bar and the bug should occur. If not, use
Backspace to delete some and input some more.

(Sometimes swapping step 2 and 3 might help reproduce the issue.)

Unfortunately, neither the contents of the source package nor the upstream
webpage I found had directed me towards this github repository at the time I
was looking.

Furthermore, Launchpad is the bug tracker that Ubuntu users will use to file
bugs against packages in Ubuntu. We have no way to automatically forward
these bug reports to github issues; but anyone can subscribe to bug reports
on a given package if they are interested.

If you want this package to be in Ubuntu, I strongly encourage you to
subscribe to those bug reports.

Yes, that was the conclusion I came to as well, but please see my previous
comment about the issue that blocked me from updating this in Ubuntu:

librsplib2 has an ABI-breaking change without an soname change, so that
  would need to be resolved.

I see that the packages uploaded to your ppa still call this binary package
librsplib2. Is it your intention to keep the soname the same in spite of
the ABI break?

Do you want this package reuploaded to bionic? I'd be more than willing to
sponsor it back in if you plan to maintain it, and given a resolution to the
ABI question.

[Bug 1728445] Re: DNS not working for IPv6-only host names when using Miredo

2017-10-29 Thread Steve Langasek
systemd-resolve is not part of resolvconf, it is part of systemd;
reassigning.

A possible quick fix is to modify the /etc/nsswitch.conf:

Or even remove "resolve" completely: "hosts: ... dns"

We are not installing libnss-resolve by default in Ubuntu, we are using
systemd-resolved as a DNS resolver only. Perhaps the solution for you
is to remove the libnss-resolve package from your system? Why do you
have it installed?

** Package changed: resolvconf (Ubuntu) => systemd (Ubuntu)

[Bug 1728354] Re: ntfs: unsupported reparse point

2017-10-29 Thread Jean-Pierre
Reparse points are a way to trigger some specific processing when
accessing a file. For instance a reparse point can be used to define a
new patch to the file or directory, which ntfs-3g emulates as a symbolic
link.

Windows 10 makes use of new reparse points for new kinds of features, which
ntfs-3g processes through plugins. Currently two plugins are available : one
for decompressing system files and one for extracting deduplicated files.
According to the ntfsinfo, you need the former one, made available by Eric
Biggers on
https://github.com/ebiggers/ntfs-3g-system-compression

Ready-to-use plugins are available on
http://jp-andre.pagesperso-orange.fr/advanced-ntfs-3g.html#download

To make use of these plugins, you need ntfs-3g 2016.2.22AR.1 or more
recent.

[Bug 1723857] Re: onscreen keyboard appears whenever i touch touchscreen

2017-10-29 Thread tom
Jeremy, that's great. I marked the other bug as a duplicate, which it
is. This is a better, more thorough, more correctly-worded bug. I agree
that people can and should work on fixing a duplicate bug. That is a
separate question from which bug should be marked duplicate. This bug is
also correctly attributed to the part of Ubuntu that needs to be fixed
(Not Ubuntu at all, but GNOME).

[Bug 1728450] Re: Details are not visible by default and hide important configuration

2017-10-29 Thread Jeremy Bicha
I believe you'll find that if you change your theme to Ambiance (the
default in the Ubuntu session), the Settings sidebar is tall enough to
show all items without a vertical scrollbar.

The sidebar being too short by default is
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/789372

Discussion about ordering and grouping the panels is
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/786810

Since they are really two separate issues, could you please split this
into another bug?

[Bug 95854] [NEW] Folder is overwritten with a file with the same name

2017-10-29 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: nautilus

1) lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu Vivid Vervet (development branch)
Release:15.04

2) apt-cache policy nautilus
nautilus:
  Installed: 1:3.14.2-0ubuntu2
  Candidate: 1:3.14.2-0ubuntu2
  Version table:
 *** 1:3.14.2-0ubuntu2 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ vivid/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

3) What is expected to happen is when one executes the following in a terminal:
cd ~/Desktop
mkdir test
cd
touch test

then uses Nautilus to copy the file test to the Desktop, it does not allow
this, just like it won't when using cp in a terminal:
cp test Desktop/
sudo cp test Desktop/
cp: cannot overwrite directory ‘Desktop/test’ with non-directory

or if one was using Windows.

4) What happens instead is one gets a prompt noting:
File Conflict
Replace folder "test"?
A folder with the same name already exists on "desktop".
Replacing it will remove all files in the folder.
Select a new name for the destination
Apply this action to all files
Cancel Skip Replace

and if one accidentally hit the button Replace, the folder with all of
its contents are permanently deleted, and replaced with the file.

[Bug 1728440] Re: New package - qqc2-desktop-style

2017-10-29 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1728440/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1242310] [NEW] Bluetooth disabled after resume

2017-10-29 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

On Ubuntu 13.10 a Lenovo X1 Carbon running Ubuntu 64-bit has problems to
communicate with bluetooth input devices on resume from suspend. This
problem happened only after upgrade to Ubuntu 13.10.

Reloading the module btusb fixes the problem (rmmod btusb; modprobe
btusb). Placing the module name btusb in the MODULES parameter on
/etc/default/acpi-support does not fix the problem. I had to create a
script in /etc/pm/sleep.d/ to make the module reload successfully.

When I press the mute button on my USB headset (Plantronics .Audio 626

  mute button again.

  Expected:

  - microphone is muted
  - nothing else happens

  Actual:

  - microphone is muted
  - mouse can still move but is unresponsive to clicks
  - pressing the keyboard doesn't do anything (except for Ctrl+Alt+F1 which
does work and switch to virtual console)

I'm not sure this is filed against the right package, please reassign if
it's not. Also, I'm happy to provide more info, but I wasn't sure what I

This is on a fully up-to-date Precise 12.04 system.

[Bug 1176577] [NEW] [HP Compaq dc7700 Small Form Factor PC] mei unexpected reset in kernel 3.8

2017-10-29 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Right after upgrading kernel from 3.5 to 3.8 (Ubuntu 13.04), the syslog
got flooded by a large number of such messages:

(cut)
May 5 15:33:15 compaq-aldo kernel: [ 205.064042] mei :00:03.0: unexpected
reset: dev_state = RESETING
May 5 15:33:21 compaq-aldo kernel: [ 211.076029] mei :00:03.0: unexpected

May 5 15:33:39 compaq-aldo kernel: [ 229.112045] mei :00:03.0: unexpected
reset: dev_state = RESETING
(cut)

This was associated by non reliable ethernet functionality, i.e.
transfer of large files from my Ubuntu box to a local NAS connected via
ethernet got hanging with no other apparent errors or diagnostics:
nautilus copy just stopped transferring data, leaving the copy window
there with the progress bar stopped.

I tried to reboot, but this behaviour is perfectly reproducible.

This is one of the first syslog lines got from that kernel:

May 5 15:30:15 compaq-aldo kernel: [0.00] Linux version
3.8.0-19-generic (buildd@roseapple) (gcc version 4.7.3 (Ubuntu/Linaro
4.7.3-1ubuntu1) ) #30-Ubuntu SMP Wed May 1 16:36:13 UTC 2013 (Ubuntu
3.8.0-19.30-generic 3.8.8)

I attach the whole syslog from boot of that kernel.

On the same box, launching a previsous kernel (3.5) works flawlessly.
For the time being, I removed 3.8 kernel from my box, now running 3.5.

Kind regards
Aldo

Aldo

[Bug 993655] [NEW] Unity looses mouse click handler when using enabling USB headset

2017-10-29 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I have a Plantronics D100 headset.

When I press the button on the headset to enable it, Unity looses its
click handler, in that it can not click and drag windows.

The cursor is visible and moves just fine. I can switch applications
using Alt+Tab, and I can launch new applications using the keyboard. But
I cannot close the existing window, or change focus to another window by
using the mouse.

The Headset microphone and speaker work just fine!

Tested this on a laptop and desktop machine. Both running Ubuntu 12.04.

The headset I'm using is a Plantronics D100 unit.

I have had this problem for the past month while on the 12.04 beta release.

[Bug 1728450] [NEW] Details are not visible by default and hide important configuration

2017-10-29 Thread Paul Smith
Public bug reported:

When I open the gnome-control-center, I see the following menu items
down the left side: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Background, Notifications, Search,
Region & Language, Universal Access, Online Accounts, Privacy, Sharing,
Sound, Power, Network, Devices (with a sub-menu). Screenshot attached.

If I happen to move my mouse into the menu area I _may_ notice a very
thin "scroll area" show up briefly before it disappears again, or I
_may_ notice very subtle dotted lines at the bottom of the menu, and I
_may_ notice that there is actually another menu item at the bottom that
I have to scroll down to see: Details.

And if I happen to find that and click on that sub-menu, I will find
critically important items in there such as Date & Time configuration
(what I was looking for to get an AM/PM clock, and couldn't find at
all), Users configuration (couldn't find that either so had to add users
by hand from the CLI), and Default Applications (also important so I can
change the default mail client etc.)

What does "Details" even mean? This menu might as well be named
"Miscellaneous". Really that would be MORE helpful: at least it would
be clear that there's a bunch of random stuff below that menu, which is
the reality. The only thing in "Details" that feels appropriate to the
name is the "About" menu.

I really like the format change of gnome-control-center from the "rows
of icons" to the left-side menu: it looks nice and avoiding the "go back
and select something else" by just clicking along the left side is a
very pleasant experience. But the menu organization here is really
confusing and hard to use, and needs serious attention.

There needs to be enough top-level menus to be sure everything fits on
the screen without scrolling.

The About menu item should be on the top-level menu at the bottom of the
list... people think it's not important but it's actually REALLY
important, so inexperienced people can easily obtain critical system
details when asking for help.

And the grouping of these menus needs love: for example, why is "Wi-Fi"
a separate menu item from "Network"? I would think that Wi-Fi, Network,
Online Accounts and Sharing could all be combined into one sub-menu like
"Internet" or similar. Actually I don't have a Wi-Fi adapter in my
system so I don't know what shows up there: maybe "Wi-Fi" is more about
the hardware, and belongs under "Devices"? Either way.

Also I think "Region & Language", "Universal Access", and possibly "Date
& Time" could be grouped together.

And "Background", "Privacy", and "Notifications" could be grouped under
some sort of "desktop" menu. Or maybe "Region & Language" would stay a
top-level item and "Universal Access" and "Date & Time" would be added
to "Desktop".

Anyway. I realize there are lots of ways to chop these items up and
people will have disagreements, but the current situation is really very
not good: the control center needs to avoid the need for scrolling to
see all the options and if things are moved into sub-menus the names of
those menus HAVE to be evocative and clear.

[Bug 1728451] [NEW] Google Chrome icons missing

2017-10-29 Thread Roberto Leinardi
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 17.10 Google Chrome indicator icons are missing. In the
previous versions of Ubuntu Google Chrome was adding a main icon form
where it was possible to completely terminate its processes, plus the
Extension icons (eg. Hangouts icon).

After the update to 17.10 these icons are missing.

This bug is probably related to #1728449 but is NOT a duplicate: even
when other icons are shown correctly (eg. Steam or InSync), Chrome icons

But
I cannot close the existing window, or change focus to another window by
using the mouse.

The Headset microphone and speaker work just fine!

Tested this on a laptop and desktop machine. Both running Ubuntu 12.04.

The headset I'm using is a Plantronics D100 unit.

I have had this problem for the past month while on the 12.04 beta release.

[Bug 1006156] [NEW] Mute button on USB headset steals and holds on to mouse focus

2017-10-29 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

When I press the mute button on my USB headset (Plantronics .Audio 626
DSP), it steals the "mouse focus" and holds onto it until I press the
mute button again.

Expected:

- microphone is muted
- nothing else happens

Actual:

- microphone is muted
- mouse can still move but is unresponsive to clicks
- pressing the keyboard doesn't do anything (except for Ctrl+Alt+F1 which does
work and switch to virtual console)

I'm not sure this is filed against the right package, please reassign if
it's not. Also, I'm happy to provide more info, but I wasn't sure what I
could provide (even after reading
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Hotkeys/Troubleshooting/).

This is on a fully up-to-date Precise 12.04 system.

** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Incomplete
