[Bug 1745118] Re: Unable to boot with i386 4.13.0-25 / 4.13.0-26 / 4.13.0-31 kernel on Xenial / Artful

** Description changed:

Some SRU testing node cannot boot with the latest 32bit 4.13 linux-hwe
  kernel.

Take node "fozzie"(Dell PowerEdge R320) for example, it works with
  4.13.0-21.24~16.04.1 but not 4.13.0-25 / 4.13.0-26 / 4.13.0-31 kernel on
  Xenial.

From the BMC console, I can see the grub menu on boot and after that it
will drop into a boot loop.

This can be reproduced on Artful 4.13 as well.

Note that this kernel works for some of the node in our test pool (Intel
  SDP - Denlow)

[Bug 1741390] Re: Package two years out of date

2018-01-24 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
FYI - I completed 10.2 into Bionic now, it was in proposed and will soon
be available there.

But the backport to Xenial drove me nuts (for stupid reasons), and since I
can't even qualify it for the SRU I gave up the backport for not.
Yes for a xenial-backports only upload it would not be "that much"
qualification needed. But still I'd not like to ship it untested.

Several people are going on with an discussion if/who/how to provide
newer versions of this into older releases. But things are going (very)
slow and it seems other than me (and you) nobody really wants/likes it
and considers things good as they are :-/

For the question you could ask to vmware (so that it comes from different
angles) I think it would be:
"if one would provide an Ubuntu ppa with such a backport, would vmware be
willing to qualify this against their current set of supported vmware versions
and post that on a bug like this?"
Because without that offer all my work for a backport would be kind of in vain
as no one would release it.

[Bug 1744062] Re: L3 HA: multiple agents are active at the same time

2018-01-24 Thread Hua Zhang
I have some thoughts in my mind for this problem as below:

1, First of all, we need to figure out why it will appear multiple
ACTIVE master HA nodes in theory ?

Assume the master is dead (at this time, it's status in DB is still
ACTIVE), then slave will be selected to new master. After the old master
has recovered, the L444 this.enable_keepalived() [4] will be invoked to
spawn keepalived instance, so multiple ACTIVE master HA nodes occur.
(Related patch - https://review.openstack.org/#/c/357458/)

So the key to solving this problem is to reset the status of all HA
ports into DOWN at a certain code path, so the patch
https://review.openstack.org/#/c/470905/ is used to address this point.
But this patch sets the status=DOWN at this code path
'fetch_and_sync_all_routers -> get_router_ids' which will lead to a
bigger problem when the load is large.

2, Why setting status=DOWN in the code path 'fetch_and_sync_all_routers
-> get_router_ids' will lead to a bigger problem when the load is large
?

If l3-agent is not active via heartbeat check, l3-agent will be set
status=AGENT_REVIVED [1], then l3-agent will be triggered to do a full
sync (self.fullsync=True) [2] so that the code logic
'periodic_sync_routers_task -> fetch_and_sync_all_routers' will be
called again and again [3].

All these operations will aggravate the load for l2-agent, l2-agent, DB
and MQ etc. Conversely, large load also will aggravate AGENT_REVIVED
case.

So it's a vicious circle, the patch
https://review.openstack.org/#/c/522792/ is used to address this point.
It uses the code path '__init__ -> get_service_plugin_list ->
_update_ha_network_port_status' instead of the code path
'periodic_sync_routers_task -> fetch_and_sync_all_routers'.

3, We have known, the small heartbeat value can cause AGENT_REVIVED then
aggravate the load, the high load can cause other problems, like some
phenomenons Xav mentioned before, I pasted them as below as well:

- We later found that openvswitch had run out of filehandles, see LP: #1737866
- Resolving that allowed ovs to create a ton more filehandles.

This is just an example, there may be other circumstances. All those let
us mistake the fix doesn't fix the problem.

The high load can also cause other similar problem, for another example:

a, can cause the process neutron-keepalived-state-change to exit due to
term singal [5] (https://paste.ubuntu.com/26450042/), neutron-
keepalived-state-change is used to monitor vrrp's VIP change then update
the ha_router's status to neutron-server [6]. so that l3-agent will not
be able to update the status for ha ports, thus we can see multiple
ACTIVE case or multiple STANDBY case or others.

b, can cause the RPC message sent from here [6] can not be handled well.

So for this problem, my concrete opinion is:

a, bump up heartbeat option (agent_down_time)

b, we need this patch: https://review.openstack.org/#/c/522641/

c, Ensure that other components (like MQ, DB etc) have no performance
problems

[Bug 1744379] Re: tcp_fastretrans_alert kernel warnings, possible system hardlock

2018-01-24 Thread Lastique
I tried kernel 4.15.0-rc9 and had the same kind of hard lockup. The
system wouldn't react to mouse or keypresses after some idle time. The
log is attached (the kernel was upgraded on Jan 24-th). There are many
errors about soft lockups in the log, although the backtraces are
different from 4.13.

[Bug 1744030] Re: systemd does not create directory for pid file

2018-01-24 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Thank you for your report.

This looks like a local configuration problem, rather than a bug in
Ubuntu.

You can find pointers to get help for this sort of problem here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community

Since we use this bug tracker to track bugs in Ubuntu, rather than
configuration problems, I'm marking this bug as Invalid. This helps us
to focus on fixing bugs in Ubuntu.

If you believe that this is really a bug, then you may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem,
explain why you believe this is a bug in Ubuntu rather than a problem
specific to your system, and then change the bug status back to New.

If you would like those features to work for now then please try logging

[Bug 1744030] Re: systemd does not create directory for pid file

2018-01-24 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Hi Christian,
xenial only has 2.15-1ubuntu1.1 which still uses a sysV init script and that
works on Xenial.
The version in artful might have an arbitrary amount of dependencies to its
systemd or other components - I don't think pulling that back to xenial is
reasonable.

I checked xenial and artful.
3.2.0-4ubuntu2 works on artful
2.15-1ubuntu1.1 works on xenial
Both as expected.

On artful which uses the service file I see this path:
PIDFile=/var/run/nagios/nrpe.pid
And the file is properly filled with the correct PID.

The pid is set by systemd, nagios doesn't need write access to it.

For the artful/xenial version hybrid I don't immediately see why it
would break, but it is neither supported nor recommended to do so :-/

[Bug 1744130] Re: crashes on "Etats" in grisbi 1.1.1

2018-01-24 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

There isn't really enough information here for a developer to confirm
this issue is a bug, or to begin working on it, so I am marking this bug
Incomplete for now.

If you can provide exact steps so that a developer can reproduce the
original problem, then please add them to this bug and change the status
back to New.

[Bug 1740424] Re: package tomcat8 8.0.32-1ubuntu1.4 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2018-01-24 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
There must be more output to that when not wrapped.
It seems it complains about a bad Restart setting and therefor it gets into
"Loaded: error (Reason: Invalid argument)"

Now the tomcat8 in Xenial doesn't even have a service file that could be broken.
It still uses a sysV init file and systemd picks it up via generators.

Did you yourself add a tomcat8 service file?
Is there a tomcat8.service file somewhere?
If so who owns it:
  $ dpkg -S

What is the source of your tomcat8 package and its content?
  $ apt-cache policy tomcat8

[Bug 1745114] [NEW] Please add guest uuid and guest-generic local include files

2018-01-24 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Public bug reported:

No matter how much we improve the per guest dynamic profiles, there
might always be edge cases not covered.

We do have a generic profile which all lbvirt-qemu are using via an include
from the base guest template.
Each guest profile does:
#include <- generic things
#include  <-
generated for the guest

We have a local override for special cases that affect libvirt or
virt-aa-helper:
grep -Hrn include /etc/apparmor.d/* | grep local | grep libvirt
/etc/apparmor.d/usr.lib.libvirt.virt-aa-helper:92: #include

/etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.libvirtd:107: #include
Those overrides are for users to modify, and are not messed with by packaging
updates and similar.

But we miss two things:
1. a local override for ALL GUESTS (that would be included from
abstractions/libvirt-qemu)
2. a local override PER GUEST (to only allow something very specific for one
guest) that would be
   included from the guests libvirt/libvirt-.files

So I propose at:
libvirt/libvirt-:
#include .files> <- local override for the guest itself

And at:
abstractions/libvirt-qemu
#include <- local override for guest in general

I see that people might prefer names, but those might be ambiguous - did you
really mean "test" yesterday to be the same as "test" today and similar?
So it shall be uuids.

So far this is for remembering the idea, need to prep something for upstream to
ack on once I get to it.

[Bug 1744942] Re: Lenovo IdeaPad U460 fails to boot with 4.13.0-31.34~16.04.1

2018-01-24 Thread Stefan Bader
I can see the same behaviour on a Intel Xeon box. At some point I tried
mainline build 4.15-rc9 and that behaves exactly the same. So it looks
like an issue with the KPTI implementation which still exists upstream.
I am planning to experiment with further 4.15-rc's and then try
bisecting there.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Reviewing your dmesg attachment in this bug report it
seems that there is a problem with your hardware. I recommend
performing a back up and then investigating the situation. Measures you
might take include checking cable connections and using software tools
to investigate the health of your hardware. In the event that is is not
in fact an error with your hardware please set the bug's status back to
New. Thanks and good luck!

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1723127] Re: Intel i40e PF reset due to incorrect MDD detection (continues...)

2018-01-24 Thread Stefan Kooman
Hi there. I can confirm this problem still exists in newest kernels and
with the latest intel drivers as of today:

Jan 19 16:05:19 osd9 kernel: [511271.581413] i40e :02:00.1: TX driver issue
detected, PF reset issued
Jan 19 16:09:08 osd9 kernel: [511500.919380] i40e :02:00.0: TX driver issue
detected, PF reset issued

driver: i40e-2.4.3 (and xenial / 4.13 shipped driver: 2.1.14-k)
kernel: 4.13.0-25-generic #29~16.04.2-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jan 9 12:16:39 UTC 2018
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux. Kernel loaded with nopti noibrs noibpb
(Meltdown / Spetre mitigation disabled).

We can trigger the issue with high load (benchmarking Ceph cluster with
fio: 4 clients, 8 threads, iodepth 256, 100% random write, 64K block
size).

Only when we use relatively large block size (64K) do we hit this
problem. With 4K blocks we do not hit this issue. We haven't tested
large random reads (that test is still to be done).

When using openvswitch port-channel (as we do) with jumbo frames ...
this port-channel will not come back online after the reset. rmmod i40e
/ modprobe i40e does the trick though.

[Bug 1722778] Re: System frequently becomes completely unresponsive due to thrashing

2018-01-24 Thread Luca Olivetti
Since this bug appeared when I upgraded from zesty to artful, I reverted to
4.10.0-37 (the last kernel I had in zesty) and it had been rock-solid (it
becomes unresponsive from time to time but it recovers in a few seconds).
With each kernel upgrade I try the new one but the problem is still there
(though I did not try 4.13.0-31, but I don't see anything in its changelog
regarding this bug).
I also tried the BFQ scheduler, (as suggested to me here
http://ubuntu.5.x6.nabble.com/Bad-memory-swap-management-in-17-10-td5160226.html)
but it didn't resolve the issue.
Regarding the previous comment than "4 GBs ram is quite small", 4.10.0 manages
quite well the same workload (I have 8Gb but four are eaten by virtualbox).

[Bug 1730152] Re: Internal microsd card reader does not work in Ubuntu 17.10

2018-01-24 Thread sfc
You could try this driver: https://github.com/josch09/ampe_stor. From
the code, it seems supporting AU6601, AU6621, and AU6625, but it's not
working on my envy 13 ad110tu (AU6625). It can detect the card, and get
the capacity, but then many errors will occur and finally the reader
dies. Maybe it will work on your device.

[Bug 1739674] Re: virsh Fails at Hot Plugging Network Device with model virtio

2018-01-24 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
I discussed with a few more people, to get this resolved is a major dev
effort on the dynamic apparmor for libvirt/qemu - and we only have
unproven ideas how to do it for now.

I made this "a sibling" of bug 1677398 which I tracked for just this
already.

Sorry I can't help immediately, but thinking about it also made me think
we might want a per-guest local override - I think I open a bug for that
and see if I get to it sooner (as it is simpler).

[Bug 1530530] Re: Installer doesn't show up on some Chromebooks: "Error setting up gfxboot"

2018-01-24 Thread dan
Hello All!!
I would like to start off by saying thank you for all your hard work in
trying to figure this issue out thanks again to all.

so here i was with my new Acer CB5-571 with chrome OS on it and i
just couldn't handle it any more i'm in the process of learning Linux
and found that i could install it on my Chromebook, after a few hurdles
i was able to finely get to the bios screen aka sea bios now i got this
error from the USB drive and could not get past it. after reading the
forum i came accost a post that said something along thew lines of
"live" at that point it was like (LIGHT BULB) so i just simply typed
live at the BOOT: command prompt and just like that it took off and i'm
now installing kubuntu 17.10.1

I'm sure it may be way more complicated for some but i thought it
would be good for me to post this to the forum as i normally don't in
fact this is my very first post ever.. again i appreciate all of you in
all the hard work every one has provided to this issue and i hope my
findings help
