[Bug 1041009] [NEW] Flash causes X to freeze

2012-08-23 Thread RichardN
Public bug reported:

Using flash on Firefox occasionally causes the screen to freeze
completely. Something has crashed quite hard. I can log in remotely
via ssh but killing firefox, flashplayer, gdm and anything else I can
think of does not cause the screen to unfreeze. I normally end up re-
booting.

Using 12.04 fully patched. AMD64 arch. fglrx video drivers.

[Bug 798462] Re: update-manager's free space calculator for /boot seems insufficient

2012-04-11 Thread RichardN
I also had this occur on an upgrade to 12.04B2. It probably was a disk
space issue, I removed the old kernel and reinstalled. It would help a
lot if it was possible to have old kernels automatically deleted.

[Bug 859283] Re: non-maximized applications sometimes reset to maximized when restored from the launcher

2011-12-04 Thread RichardN
Yes, I have a dual monitor setup, 64 bit, all updates applied.

It happens to me only with Firefox. Creating it is quite simple. Open
Firefox, un-maximise with the top left button with the square icon.
Minimise it with the button with the line icon. Then hit the firefox
icon in the dock on the left and it will come back as maximised.

Except that sometimes it doesn't happen like that. I don't know what
the difference is. It will go for days where it will go back
(correctly) to the same window it was in before it was minimised and I
think oh the problem is fixed, then it will change back to the problem
behaviour for days or even weeks.

It does seem that when the problem is occuring, Firefox always opens
maximised and when it is not occuring, Firefox opens to a non-maximised
window.

I have this bug and unity -reset did not get rid of it for me. It does
seem to be intermittent though so there may be some setting that affects
it.

[Bug 861265] Re: [Oneiric] [Regression] firefox title bar does not appear (same problem with thunderbird) no window decoration for either application.

2011-10-03 Thread RichardN
It seems that if firefox starts maximised and then is reduced to a
normal window the bar is missing. If it starts as a window the bar is
there. Firefox seems to want to always start maximised even though I
almost never use it that way.

[Bug 728221] [NEW] Resume fails with softreset message

2011-03-02 Thread RichardN
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vbetool

When I try to resume from a suspend the machine hangs completely with a text
console saying
ata3: Softreset failed (device not ready)

The machine is an HP dv2 with and AMD Neo64 cpu running up to date
10.10. Suspend/resume used to work fine under both 10.4 and when I
upgraded to 10.10. I'm not sure what changed, perhaps some of the
recent kernel updates?

[Bug 635577] Re: Kernel keeps reporting EH complete for ATA hd disk

2010-09-22 Thread RichardN
Mainline kernel 2.6.35.4-maverick

The ubuntu maverick kernel keeps reporting ( in dmesg without the )

 ata3.00: configured for UDMA/100
 ata3: EH complete

while there are no apparent problems with my harddrive or controller.

I have also tested mainline kernel 2.6.35.4-maverick. The problem exists
there as well. So this is a vanilla kernel 'problem'.

Removed 'requires upstream testing' tag.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.35-20-generic

- I read somewhere that earlier version of kernel repored EH complete for
- ATA drivers incorrectly. So there was no problem with the drive or
- controller, just the kernel.
+ Mainline kernel 2.6.35.4-maverick

- Since my laptop is running fine (although Vista tends to park diskheads
- outside the disk) and the only error I see is:

[Bug 635577] [NEW] Kernel keeps reporting EH complete for ATA hd disk

2010-09-11 Thread RichardN
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.35-20-generic

I read somewhere that earlier version of kernel repored EH complete for
ATA drivers incorrectly. So there was no problem with the drive or
controller, just the kernel.

Since my laptop is running fine (although Vista tends to park diskheads
outside the disk) and the only error I see is:

ata3.00: configured for UDMA/100
ata3: EH complete

I assume this is due to changes in the kernel.

[Bug 569900] Re: mount: mounting /dev/md0 on /root/ failed: Invalid argument

2010-06-19 Thread RichardN
I have this exact same issue. 500.1GB seagate disks and 64bit 10.04 server.
Have tried installing in a couple of different configurations with no luck.
The first time I got the mount: mounting /dev/disk/by-uuid/uuid on /root/
failed: Invalid argument message and I noticed that gub-mkconfig was detecting
a uuid that as far as I can tell did not exist on the system. So I changed
/etc/default/grub so that I didn't pass uuid as a parameter. After that it
wouldn't mount /proc.
The system works fine when installed on only one disk. I'll have one or two
more goes at installing using some of the ideas here. If it still doesn't work
I'll have to give up and use debian.

[Bug 569683] [NEW] video distortion of desktop applet when using scrollbar

2010-04-25 Thread RichardN
Public bug reported:

(Upgrade from Karmic to Lucid some weeks ago. Running latest patches).

I have two widgets on my kde desktop. When I use the scrollbar in one
widget, the other widget gets distorted e.g. the scroll is repeated in
the other widget. A block of the same size is scrolled.

Most obviously would be to report a bug in the nvidia 3d driver or x.org
server, so this is why I pressume the plasma desktop is having a
problem. Cause there may also be some dark magic in there.

Screenshot will be uploaded.

[Bug 499033] Re: BUG: scheduling while atomic

2010-03-19 Thread RichardN
Hi,

Perhaps I can try to run Lucid Lynx. However the problem is easily
solvable (we found out by incident) by building the latest kernel with
RT path from Ingo Molnar

Instructions are at
https://rt.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/RT_PREEMPT_HOWTO (as you will
certainly know).

[Bug 499033] Re: BUG: scheduling while atomic

2010-03-19 Thread RichardN
Hi Alessio,

I will have a go at the Lucid kernels you provide via the PPA.

Is there a big difference between applying the patch to a Vanilla kernel
and Ubuntu kernel? I wouldn't mind having some wiki that kind off
describes the steppes to take to create an RT Ubuntu kernel (without
'warranty' of course).

[Bug 499033] Re: BUG: scheduling while atomic

2010-03-19 Thread RichardN

Note:
I installed the linux-realtime package. Not sure if it is a meta-package.

The kernel headers were not installed. So the kernel post install script
that compiles my NVidia module (proprietry) did not work. After
installing the kernel headers, it did of course.

(A package named linux-meta-realtime is NOT visible in Synaptic).

System (x64) runs fine so far. No hangups in KDE with compiz wobbly
windows and audio running.

[Bug 130979] Re: vbetool 100% cpu usage on resume

2009-11-21 Thread RichardN
I have this problem to. I'm using Karmic on an HP Dv2 laptop. I have
the same issue with suspend/resume as the initial poster - I have to
switch virtual terminals and then back to get output then vbetool uses
(close to) 100% CPU. After that killing the vbetool post process
causes another one to be spawned. Using killall vbetool causes the
video display to crash at point I need to switch virtual terminals again
and then vbetool gets restarted. Also, suspend resume only seems to
work the first time. I can't do it a again.

[Bug 447961] [NEW] Printer autoconfigured, but LPR prints with to wide font/cpi setting

2009-10-10 Thread RichardN
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: system-config-printer

Switched on my HP PSC 750 (USB) and it was automatically added to the
system. COOL! :)

Tried to do a test print:
fdisk -l /dev/sda | lpr

Print did come out, but part of the text is missing. There are about 50
characters per line. Very wide and large characters.

I was expecting courier 10/11 to print at least 72 characters per line
and perhaps line wrapping by default..

[Bug 446503] [NEW] gnome-keyboard configuration does not affect kbd configuration in /dev/ttyx configuration (alt+f1 regular tty)

2009-10-08 Thread RichardN
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

When I installed ubuntu 9.04 via wubi, it installed a Dutch keyboard and
local although I asked for english.

So I changed the keyboard setting after installation. Now in 9.10 (after
upgrade) I notice that in regular ttys (/dev/tty3), so not in XTERMs or
GNOME terms, the keyboard setting is still invalid.

Even after changing to a USA keyboard layout, slecting that new layout
and pressing 'apply system wide' does not help. Logging on to a fresh
tty still shows the wrong keyboard settings there.

[Bug 441039] Re: Ubuntu One crashed on launch

2009-10-05 Thread RichardN
I starts fine now. First time and second time I started it it crashed.
I remember that I have also started the client itself, after the prefernces app
crashed two times

Possible solution:
start 'ubuntuone-client-applet' from a commandline and close it
start 'ubuntuone-client-preferences' from the system-preferences menu.

I suspect that the first command creates some configuration (file) so that the
preferences command can save some preferences to that file

Can someone confirm this?

[Bug 442081] [NEW] Loop device with root filesystem cannot be unmounted during shutdown

2009-10-04 Thread RichardN
Public bug reported:

Have installed ubuntu 9.04 using wubi (put wubi.exe and iso in same directory
to install).
Upgraded to 9.10 karmic development branch using update-manager -d.

Upgrade went fine, but when system is now shutdown, shutdown procedure hangs.
The problem is that the loop device cannot unmount the device that is running
my root disk (20G image mounted on loop device).
Pressing ctrl-alt-del produces two more shutdown messages. One is about
deactivating swap.but that one does not succeed either...

So problem is in kernel / loop device or the shutdown order..which
is configured in either the kernel or some shutdown script?

Output is

Note that I have managed to complete the upgrade manually by apt-get
installing everything that apt-get upgrade said was held back.

Thanks,

It took about 5 or 6 hours to download all the packages. I wasn't there

question. It failed shortly after that. Nobody was using any

[Bug 46228] Re: Orinocco card does not work

2006-07-12 Thread RichardN
There is a thread with people having the same problem on the Ubuntu
forums:

http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=150627

The problem is that the orinocco and the host_ap drivers were both
loaded. Blacklisting the host_ap drivers as suggested in the thread
fixes the problem.

It shouldn't be loading both those drivers though.
