[Bug 580333] Re: tomboy notes disappeared

2011-07-24 Thread Sandy Armstrong
Babygenius, you seem to be describing a different bug than everybody
else here.

If the files are readable in a text editor, than Tomboy should be able
to read them just fine. Did you open the Search window and look in
there? The Tomboy notes menu only shows the most recent notes.

If you still have trouble, please file a new bug.

2011-05-31 Thread Sandy Armstrong
This was also filed upstream here

Yup, this is a bug with ubuntu's appindicator patch. Last time I

[Bug 678264] Re: Can't Copy and paste from tomboy to message body

2010-12-06 Thread Sandy Armstrong
It appears to be a bug when apps try to get rich text from what Tomboy
puts on the clipboard. We only recently added support for rich
copy/paste, so it is probably a bug with how we are doing it, although
it could also be something in gtk-sharp or gtk+ in Maverick.

Anyway, it's almost definitely a Tomboy bug, so I'm changing it over.

2010-10-25 Thread Sandy Armstrong
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tomboy

All versions of Tomboy prior to 1.4.2 are susceptible to this bug:

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=632535

Due to an error in a regex in Tomboy's web sync add-in, notes created in
Gnote may send blank content to Ubuntu One or other web sync servers
like Snowy. This could ultimately lead to data loss, if the user
expects that a clean Tomboy sync'd to U1 will get all notes with their
full content.

I highly recommend that Tomboy is upgraded to 1.4.2 in Maverick, and
1.2.2 in Lucid. Both of these stable bugfix releases were made to
provide a fix for this bug to distros.

If you prefer to patch the fix in, the relevant commit is here:

[Bug 666511] Re: Note data loss with Tomboy sync to Ubuntu One, for notes created in Gnote

2010-10-25 Thread Sandy Armstrong
To be absolutely clear, this bug impacts Tomboy 1.0 (Karmic), 1.2
(Lucid), and 1.4 (Maverick).

If Karmic and Lucid are still being maintained, I recommend those
packages get the fix as well, though I only did an official upstream
tarball release for 1.2.x, 1.4.x, and 1.5.x (development series).

[Bug 664963] Re: Tomboy shows templates as notes

2010-10-23 Thread Sandy Armstrong
Yeah, this is clearly a bug in the patch:

++  var menuItems = manager.Notes
++  .Where (n = !n.IsSpecial)
++  .OrderByDescending (n = n.ChangeDate)
++  .Take (10)
++  .Select (n = new NoteMenuItem (n,
n.IsPinned))
++  .ToArray ();

There is no check at all for whether the note is a template. You guys
need to add something like:

Tag template_tag = TagManager.GetOrCreateSystemTag
(TagManager.TemplateNoteSystemTag);

and change the Where clause to:

++  .Where (n = !n.IsSpecial
!n.ContainsTag(template_tag))

2010-10-22 Thread Sandy Armstrong
From the upstream bug:

Assuming you really mean locale, this is a bug in the translation, not
in Tomboy itself.

We do some pretty printing of dates, and all the formatting strings are
translatable.

What is en_DK? I don't see an upstream translation for that locale.

[Bug 664963] Re: Tomboy shows templates as notes

2010-10-22 Thread Sandy Armstrong
A user came into IRC with this problem today. It seems to be caused by
the appindicator patch applied by Ubuntu, but I can't be totally sure.

If you quit Tomboy, and add it to your panel as an applet instead of
starting it in the way you normally start it, does the menu still have
the same problem? I believe the problem will go away at this point.

If you then remove Tomboy from your panel, and start it the way you
normally start it, does the bug reappar? If so, this is definitely a
bug with the appindicator patch and needs to be fixed by the Ubuntu
guys.

If you still have the problem even when running Tomboy as an applet,
we'll need to take a look at your .note files to figure out what's going
on.

[Bug 627744] Re: Tomboy note names are blank in the Application Indicator fallback menu

2010-10-21 Thread Sandy Armstrong
For anyone affected by this bug, the Tomboy PPA has been updated with
the latest stable version of Tomboy:

https://edge.launchpad.net/~tomboy-packagers/+archive/stable/+packages

Packages from that repository do not have this bug, because they do not
contain any Ubuntu-specific patches. Another nice benefit of using this
PPA is immediate access to bugfix releases.

The downside, of course, is that if you like Ubuntu's appindicator
support, you'll have to wait for the patched Ubuntu package.

[Bug 662085] Re: Why are notes not located in .tomboy

2010-10-17 Thread Sandy Armstrong
@Redmar: actually the majority of apps these days are storing data in
~/.local/share or ~/.config , so you should *always* make sure to back
up those directories when moving to a new system.

I'm sorry that you lost your notes. We did drop a file in ~/.tomboy
indicating that the notes had been moved, but didn't draw a lot of
attention to it, because we figured most users would either back up all
of $HOME or know enough to include the XDG data dirs.

In this case, we let you down, and I'm sorry about that. We won't be
doing that sort of move again. It was an important component of us
hitting Tomboy 1.0, and now you can count on your notes always being
stored in ~/.local/share/tomboy/ (unless you choose to set various
environment variables to relocate it).

Fortunately, this is the only report I've seen of data loss in this
circumstance, though there have been plenty of bugs or forum posts
asking where to look in a complete $HOME backup for the notes.

instance of Tomboy using my home note. But I get the following error:

The panel encountered a problem while loading OAFIID:TomboyApplet.

That's because Tomboy actively prevents you from running multiple
instances. If you are able to do it in any way, it is a bug that we
will attempt to fix.

Can I get round this by compiling tomboy from source?

Try uninstalling the package and installing the 1.4.0 tarball from

Lol, that's exactly what's already happening. There are two
codepaths, one of which is maintained by upstream Tomboy, and one of
which is occasionally maintained by Canonical.

This bug is one of the extra bugs you mention.

Adding a hidden gconf option to let users switch back to the code path
that is supported by upstream would, in point of fact, be quite
trivial.

As it happens, the reason I never accepted this patch upstream is
because I think the tray stuff should all be refactored into add-ins,
so that users can pick which they use. I haven't had time to do the
work, so I haven't taken the appindicator patch, and here we are.

Bruce, it sounds like you are not really quitting Tomboy properly during

You said almost all of your notes. You are missing notes? Do you

2010-08-20 Thread Sandy Armstrong
After the crash, the error should have been recorded in
~/.config/tomboy/tomboy.log .

If you don't see it there, simply run Tomboy from the command line (make
sure it's not already running first), then reproduce the crash, and
attach the output to this bug.

This is an Ubuntu-specific bug and is probably simply a missing package
or some such.

2010-08-11 Thread Sandy Armstrong
Rodrigo, don't you need to include the title and two newlines at the
beginning of the note-content ? I'd be surprised if this patch works
properly without the title in there (see the other two start notes for
examples).

And yes, I agree that this should only be a downstream patch. In the
future, we may adjust the upstream start notes to mention Tomboy Online,
and at that point we could collaborate on the best way to handle this
downstream so that you don't send mixed messages.

[Bug 599283] Re: active tomboy note hangs (grayed out) frequently

2010-06-28 Thread Sandy Armstrong
This is not a bug. You have turned on automatic synchronization, and
this is how it works. You cannot edit notes while a sync is in
progress.

Try picking a longer sync interval if you find this annoying. We've
made it so it will never happen while you're actively editing a note,
but if a sync is due, it will occur ~1 minute after you stop editing.

[Bug 599283] Re: active tomboy note hangs (grayed out) frequently

2010-06-28 Thread Sandy Armstrong
Sorry, sync is currently designed as a transaction with the server, so
you cannot be allowed to edit a note while a transaction is in progress.
It will be non-trivial to change this.

The slow speed has to do mostly with the speed of the U1 servers.

Skimming through the code, it's possible that we set it to always do a
sync 1 minute after you are done editing a note, which is perhaps a bit
aggressive. I need to review the code in a bit more detail, it's been
awhile since I wrote this.

The search window stuff is covered in other Launchpad bugs and appears
to be Ubuntu-specific.

Owen, that sounds like a file system error. I've heard periodic reports

2010-05-14 Thread Sandy Armstrong
Tomboy notes are now stored in ~/.local/share/tomboy, and have been
since Tomboy 1.0 (which was shipped in Karmic).

If you still have notes in ~/.tomboy, they are from Tomboy 0.14.x
(Jaunty).

I'm not aware of any Tomboy dataloss bugs that would cause you to lose
notes like this. On the off-chance that you accidentally deleted them
using Tomboy's UI, you might want to check in
~/.local/share/tomboy/Backup.

[Bug 285707] Re: Tasque cannot connect to Evolution Data Server

2010-05-11 Thread Sandy Armstrong
I'm not sure I saw anybody announce that evolution-sharp is dead.
Having no updates in one year is not uncommon in the open source world.
I'm not sure I agree with this statement from the Debian bug: It's
completely broken with no signs of life upstream.

If by completely broken you mean that the Debian/Ubuntu packages are
broken, then you're correct. If you mean the actual software is
completely broken, then that's a pretty vague statement that I'm not
sure I understand.

It's going to be funny when we start bundling evolution-sharp in Tasque
and you guys complain that we should instead be depending on an
evolution-sharp package.

[Bug 574931] Re: tomboy just stop to work anymore

2010-05-04 Thread Sandy Armstrong
Try starting Tomboy with --debug, but redirect output to a file. So,
from a terminal, run `tomboy --debug out.txt` .

Then, when Tomboy starts hanging, from another terminal run `kill -s
QUIT $(pidof tomboy)` . That will trigger Tomboy to dump even more
output (but it won't actually kill Tomboy). Attach the out.txt file
you've created to this bug and we'll see if we can get some info out of
