[Bug 2061750] Re: [MIR] python-s3transfer as indirect dependency of simplestreams (simplestreams -> python-boto3 -> python-s3transfer)

2024-04-16 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
Review for Source Package: python-s3transfer

[Summary]

MIR team ACK under the constraint to resolve the below listed
required TODOs and as much as possible having a look at the
recommended TODOs.

List of specific binary packages to be promoted to main:
python3-s3transfer

Specific binary packages built, but NOT to be promoted to main:

This does need a security review, so I'll assign ubuntu-security

Some special conditions apply, please read bug 2061217 which has all those
details.

Required TODOs:
- #1 please add testing as discussed.

Recommended TODOs:
- #2 please update to the minor fix in 0.10.1
- #3 please update the package description to include the warning of this
being good for use through boto3 but not for direct use. You can grab
 that from the projects webpage.

I've spoken with Alberto and he is already on extending the package to have
proper tests as well as considering the two recommended changes.

[Rationale, Duplication and Ownership]
Out of the stack around boto3 this is the only slight difference. boto already
had the boto interface for s3 and boto3 evolved on that. In fact the package
even suggests to only ever rely on the s3 interface in boto.
So there is another package in main providing the same high functionality:
python-boto. And that is what will be replaced via python-boto3 (bug 2061217),
But to be able to provide that it needs the low level functions in
python-s3transfer.
=> OK

A team is committed to own long term maintenance of this package.
=> Server, team-subscription already added

The rationale given in the report seems valid and useful for Ubuntu,
for simplestreams via the dependency as reported and for other of python-boto3.

Usually I suggest direct users of the lib as well, but in this case that should
be avoided (more on that below).

[Dependencies]
OK:
- no -dev/-debug/-doc packages that need exclusion
- No dependencies in main that are only superficially tested requiring
  more tests now.

Problems:
- No other Dependencies to MIR due to this

[Embedded sources and static linking]
OK:
- no embedded source present
- no static linking
- does not have unexpected Built-Using entries
- not a go package, no extra constraints to consider in that regard
- not a rust package, no extra constraints to consider in that regard

Problems: None

[Security]
OK:
- history of CVEs does not look concerning
- does not run a daemon as root
- does not use webkit1,2
- does not use lib*v8 directly
- does not expose any external endpoint (port/socket/... or similar)
- does not process arbitrary web content
- does not integrate arbitrary javascript into the desktop
- does not deal with system authentication (eg, pam), etc)
- does not deal with security attestation (secure boot, tpm, signatures)
- does not deal with cryptography (en-/decryption, certificates,
  signing, ...)
- this makes appropriate (for its exposure) use of established risk
mitigation features (being a lib only it can not yet know the use-case
  and thereby not define profiles)

Problems:
- does parse data formats in its interaction with the cloud. Since
many other things nowadays also provide AWS compatible backends one
can not safely assume the source can always be trusted.
- does use centralized online accounts to access the privileged AWS resources

[Common blockers]
OK:
- does not FTBFS currently
- This does not need special HW for build or test
- Python package, but using dh_python
I was confused for a moment not seing it in d/rules but it uses the more
modern compat >=13 variant of dh-sequence-python3 in d/control. Double
checked the build log, and it is in use there.

Problems:
- does not have a test suite that runs at build time
  - test suite fails will fail the build upon error.
- does not have a non-trivial test suite that runs as autopkgtest

[Packaging red flags]
OK:
- Ubuntu does not carry a delta
- symbols tracking not applicable for this kind of code.
- debian/watch is present and looks ok
- Upstream update history is good
- Debian/Ubuntu update history is ok
- promoting this does not seem to cause issues for MOTUs that so far
  maintained the package
- no massive Lintian warnings
- debian/rules is rather clean
- It is not on the lto-disabled list

Problems:
- The current release is not packaged, but we are not much behind.
The new only has a small bugfix, worth to give it a try but no hard
  requirement (0.10.0 -> 0.10.1).

[Upstream red flags]
OK:
- no Errors/warnings during the build
- no use of sudo, gksu, pkexec, or LD_LIBRARY_PATH (usage is OK inside
  tests)
- no use of user nobody (only nfsnobody for actual nfs use)
- no use of setuid / setgid
- no important open bugs (crashers, etc) in Debian or Ubuntu
- no dependency on webkit, qtwebkit, seed or libgoa-*
- not part of the UI for extra checks
- no translation present, but none needed for this case (lib only)

Problems: None

Peter, do note that this fix never landed on 1.2 openscap, it will require some
backporting.
To land this fix it should be done through an SRU process.

[Bug 2060817] Re: gnome-initial-setup hardcoded to Ubuntu branding, not overridable

2024-04-16 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
I'll rephrase: We discussed keeping GOA in the mix of things able to
set-up in gnome-initial-setup downstream, but that didn't happen. I was
pretty adamant about keeping that feature. That didn't happen. And yes,
that needs to be a separate bug.

As for everything else, for now, I've blacklisted gnome-initial-setup
until these issues can be addressed.

[Bug 2061930] [NEW] linux-nvidia-6.5_6.5.0-1014.14 breaks with earlier BIOS release, and modeset/resolutions are wrong

2024-04-16 Thread Patrick Geary
Public bug reported:

There are a gigantic number of changes in 1014.14 compared to 1013

I suspect some of the aspeed fixes have been undone, the mode is now...
not what it was before, looks like it's falling back to 1024x768. This
patchset also brings in a bunch of... strange patches that don't involve
the nvidia tree at all.

When I boot an older BIOS series with 1013, works fine, with this it spits out,
upon systemd loading some mid-stage stuff:

+
+ [Why it is needed]
+
+ libheif is ready to be included in main. Drop delta which removes

[Bug 2061551] Re: Merely booting Ubuntu 24.04 beta live CD breaks BitLocker & booting anything using Shim

2024-04-16 Thread Mate Kukri
@peat-new

After some discussion about the upstream bug, I'm re-opening this as
'New'.

It seems that 'Volume Full' here indeed only refers to the event log
filling up and not the entire variable store.

The shim debug log was confusing me into thinking it was the full
variable store.

This could possible be fixed by allowing shim to drive forward in the
face of errors, because as mentioned the PCRs are indeed extended just
not the event log.

Could you possibly verify this theory by disabling TPM support in the
firmware and seeing if the device boots via shim with that?

[Bug 2056548] Re: fwupd metadata bug due to outdated version in Ubuntu 22.04 repositories

2024-04-16 Thread Mario Limonciello
I've uploaded a 1.9.16 fwupd and 0.3.18 libxmlb (build-dependency for
fwpud 1.9.16) to the archive for an SRU team member to review. It
should fall under
https://launchpad.net/~superm1/+archive/ubuntu/uefi/+packages

I've got build logs and a diff of the uploads posted at this PPA as well:
https://launchpad.net/~superm1/+archive/ubuntu/uefi/+packages

FYI - this does NOT cover focal.

[Bug 2061920] Re: Sync golang-1.22 1.22.2-2 (main) from Debian unstable (main)

2024-04-16 Thread Jeremy Bícha
I have synced this for you. However, we are in Beta Freeze and this is a
seeded package so the package will wait in the unapproved queue until a
member of the Ubuntu Release Team decides whether it is appropriate for
this feature to be accepted now.

I have unsubscribed ubuntu-sponsors. Please feel to resubscribe if you
have something else that needs to be sponsored.

[Bug 2061933] Re: plasma-discover "Unable to load applications"

2024-04-16 Thread Ken Sharp
** Attachment added: "Screenshot of error and proof of Internet connection"

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/plasma-discover/+bug/2061933/+attachment/5766533/+files/discover.png

** Description changed:

Opening plasma-discover on a Kubuntu Jammy daily live CD reports:

  "Unable to load applications
  Please verify Internet connectivity"

The Internet connection is fine, and Discover even shows that updates
  are available.
+
+ On subsequent loads there is no issue, so it looks like the app simply
+ isn't "ready" when it is loaded for the first time.

[Bug 2060780] Re: CIFS stopped working/is unstable with kernel update to 5.15.0-102.112

2024-04-16 Thread Jacob Rogers
I had a hard time diagnosing this issue due to the difficulty of finding
this bug report. As I use Focal, I didn't think to check the Jammy
board. The general Ubuntu board has a report for this issue, but since
it's marked as a duplicate of this one it is hidden by default.

This has been mitigated for now by creating a systemd user service that

however, it's not ideal.

[Bug 2060817] Re: gnome-initial-setup hardcoded to Ubuntu branding, not overridable

2024-04-16 Thread Jeremy Bícha
It comes from /etc/os-release

Ubuntu Pro definitely applies to flavors.

gnome-initial-setup dropping gnome-online-accounts was an upstream
decision. By using the default web browser instead of a webkitgtk popup,
it fixed lots of existing bugs and future bugs when Google or Microsoft
change their protocols.

Continue running under SSH?

This session appears to be running under ssh. It is not recommended
to perform a upgrade over ssh currently because in case of failure it
is harder to recover.

If you continue, an additional ssh daemon will be started at port
'1022'.
Do you want to continue?

Continue [yN] Y

Starting additional sshd

To make recovery in case of failure easier, an additional sshd will
be started on port '1022'. If anything goes wrong with the running
ssh you can still connect to the additional one.
If you run a firewall, you may need to temporarily open this port. As
this is potentially dangerous it's not done automatically. You can
open the port with e.g.:
'iptables -I INPUT -p tcp --dport 1022 -j ACCEPT'

[Bug 2061929] Re: Python docker page does not import: No module named 'distutils'

2024-04-16 Thread A. Karl Kornel
I've been doing some checking, and it looks like this is because Python
3.12 (the default python3) no longer includes distutils. See
https://docs.python.org/3.12/whatsnew/3.12.html (the first paragraph
under the heading "Summary – Release highlights"), as well as PEP-0632
(https://peps.python.org/pep-0632/).

I figured this out when I tried downgrading the package to the version
in Mantic (5.0.3-1ubuntu1): `dpkg` complained that it depends on
`python3-distutils`. That led me to searching for the package in Noble,
and getting to this point.

(Adding the `regression-release` tag. Apologies if this is the wrong
regression tag to apply!)

BTW, this isn't affecting Debian 12 because they're using Python 3.11,
the last Python version to include distutils in the standard library.
Debian sid is currently on Python 3.11.8, so they haven't hit this issue
yet.

As for upstream, looking at PyPi
(https://pypi.org/project/docker/#history), 5.0.3 was the last of the
5.x series. Their latest versions are 6.1.3 and 7.0.0. Their changelog
page (https://docker-py.readthedocs.io/en/stable/change-log.html) does
not explicitly say when they moved away from distutils, but from Git
commits it looks like the removal happened in
https://github.com/docker/docker-
py/commit/42789818bed5d86b487a030e2e60b02bf0cfa284, which was included
in the 6.0.0 and later releases.

So, what to do in the meantime? According to PEP-0632, Setuptools
adopted distutils, and this started to happen in Setuptools 48
(https://github.com/pypa/setuptools/issues/417#issuecomment-653593796).
Since the python3-setuptools package in Noble is newer
(68.1.2-2ubuntu1), probably the best workaround is for `python3-docker`
to depend on `python3-setuptools`.

[Bug 2061217] Re: [MIR] python-boto3 as a dependency of simplestreams

2024-04-16 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
To update everyone on what makes this case special, we discussed this
today in the MIR meeting [1].

While everyone would have appreciated if all of this would just have
happened 2 months ago that is not where we are right now and this isn't
complaining - in fact we thank Alberto and CPC for picking it up at all.
But due to that we are in a special situation where not-accepting it
seems worse (due to the old python-boto it replaces being discontinued
and outdated and incompatible) than accepting this with the requirements
that we can make happen in the next few hours (see the review above).

Due to that, while no one was happy or super satisfied - we voted
unanimously to allow this to be promoted in noble to demote python-boto
in the same action.

The security review that we require is not expected to fit in the
remaining time before the release and much less before RC images.
Therefore it will be scheduled as if there would be no special urgency
(usually completing in 2-4 weeks). Thereby it will not be a special
urgent "change all other priority to complete it before the release"
case which also answers @marks comment #6. No need to bring one more
hard to deal with issue to Alex in this case.

Waiting with a state-change for the uploads with the tests to be in proposed
and then planning a last check with the release team to not interfere with any
RC builds (clearing -proposed is always good, but we want to be sure).

[Bug 2059952] Re: pro sometimes runs before cloud-config.service

2024-04-16 Thread Catherine Redfield
** Description changed:

  [ Impact ]
Currently, the Pro client support a daemon named ubuntu-advantage.service that
  performs two actions:

  * Actively look for Pro licenses on Azure and GCP images to perform an
auto-attach
  * Retry auto-attach on Pro images if that command fails on boot

Therefore, this daemon is only being activated on generic Azure and GCP
images and all Pro cloud images.

This daemon was originally setup to run after the cloud-config.service.
However,
due to a race condition, this is no longer happening. Right now, we manually
check in the daemon code to see if the cloud-config service has finished.

Unfortunately, this new logic now breaks the current Pro setup through
cloud-init userdata in both GCP and Azure Pro cloud images. That is
because our daemon is now running before cloud-init has even started
running. This means that the daemon will perform the attach and not
cloud-init itself. This will be clearer, in the following example:

Let's imagine this situation where a user is launching a Pro GCP image:

  1) User provides the following cloud-init userdata to the cloud image
  before booting it:

  #cloud-config

  ubuntu_advantage:
    enable: []

This means that the user wants no services to be enabled, but still want
to attach to the Pro license.

  2) Our daemon starts running before cloud-config.service has even started
  3) Our daemon see the cloud-config.service as inactive and proceeds normally
  4) Our daemon identifies that the user is running on a GCP instance and there
is a valid Pro license for it.
  5) Due to that, our daemon auto-attach the machine completely ignoring the
cloud-init directives.

Therefore, to fix that issue we need to guarantee that we will only
execute the daemon, if and only if, cloud-init has already started. That
is because, on this situation, the cloud-config.service will already
perform the attach operation following the user directives. When the
daemon starts running, it will see that the image is already attached
  and do nothing.

Finally, given this scenario, this bug is only affecting GCP/Azure Pro
images, as these are the only ones that will be able to reach the flow
  described here.

  [Discussion]

To address that issue, we are now also checking if the cloud-init service
has already started if we detect that cloud-config service is inactive. If it
isn't, the daemon will sleep for an specific amount of time before trying again.

  [ Test Plan ]
Since this is a first boot issue, we will need to create a custom image with
the package in proposed. Then, we need to guarantee that Pro configuration
delivered
through cloud-init is being honored when we launch the image.

Additionally, it is worth noting that we cannot reproduce this issue on
a VM easily. That is because, we would need "mock" the VM to pass as one
of the affected clouds and also add a valid Pro license to it.

- However, CPC is already aware of this issue and will help us creating
- the test plan here.

+ standard pro image build hook. Upload and register the image with the

[Bug 2060817] Re: gnome-initial-setup hardcoded to Ubuntu branding, not overridable

2024-04-16 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
After doing some experimenting, it's possible to override using a
separate package and doing a `dpkg-divert` to divert the systemd user
service for an executable to temporarily change the XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP
variable for this executable only. This would allow for something you
propose. However, time is running short, and if this can be done
quickly, then we can do that.

Overriding the XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP variable to anything other than
`ubuntu:GNOME` makes it default, and I'm not 100% convinced it's useful
at that point, meaning we might just blacklist it from the installation
altogether.

Really, I'd be happy if I could just override the "Welcome to Ubuntu
Noble Numbat" with "Welcome to Edubuntu Noble Numbat" somehow (it looks
like it's getting that from /etc/lsb-release), skip the Ubuntu Pro
screen (it's ambiguous if it even applies to flavors), and basically be
able to s/Ubuntu/Edubuntu/ if possible. The accent colors conforming
would be nice, but that's not 100% necessary.

What's really missing is online accounts setup, which was our primary
reason for having this in the past. This made it easy for teachers or
students to simpy set-up their email accounts first thing. Now they have
to be redirected to the system settings, which came as a surprise post-
Beta. (I realize everything had been hung-up in proposed during time_t
and xz-utils, but I made it *abundantly clear* during the Flavor Sync at
Ubuntu Summit that this was not a feature we wanted to be without).

[Bug 2059883] Re: package unixodbc-common 2.3.9-5 failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite '/etc/odbc.ini', which is also in package odbcinst 2.3.11-1

2024-04-16 Thread Lucas Kanashiro
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and trying to make Ubuntu
better.

As Hugh already mentioned, it seems that you are installing packages not
from the Ubuntu archive and that is not supported. This part of the log
makes me believe on that:

modified.conffile..etc.odbc.ini:
[ODBC Driver 17 for SQL Server]
Description=Microsoft ODBC Driver 17 for SQL Server
 Driver=/opt/microsoft/msodbcsql17/lib64/libmsodbcsql-17.10.so.5.1
 UsageCount=1

There is nothing installed in /opt by debian package from the Ubuntu
archive.

Since this is an unsupported case, I am marking this bug as Invalid.

[Bug 2061924] [NEW] grip missing from (pre)noble (2024-04-16)

2024-04-16 Thread Mark Eichin
Public bug reported:

$ apt-cache show grip
N: Unable to locate package grip
E: No packages found

Jammy/22.04 had grip_4.2.0-3_all.deb "Preview GitHub Markdown files like
Readme locally". (Not the ancient gnome cd player/ripper app.) Didn't
see any bugs here about the package being dropped. No sources.list.d
changes (machine was installed from a pre-noble iso about half an hour
ago, full-upgrade changed nothing.)

(Looking at https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/grip it's been untouched in a
while and fell out of debian main releases; perhaps that's the cause,
though it is still in sid. I'm just not sure why I don't see some
matching reference ubuntu-side.)

[Bug 1902497] Re: Hibernation fails Lubuntu 20.10 and 21.04

2024-04-16 Thread ԜаӀtеr Ⅼарсһуnѕkі
I noticed today that Kubuntu's menu's lacking a hibernate option.

According to this post about hibernate, the Ubuntu platform expectation is that
it is unsupported:
https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/re-visiting-hibernate-on-ubuntu/15953

For these reasons, it only makes sense to remove the option.

[Bug 2061745] Re: Please demote golang-1.21 to universe

2024-04-16 Thread Shengjing Zhu
sadly component-mismatches now complains

o golang-1.21: golang-1.21-doc
   [Reverse-Depends: Rescued from golang-1.21]

After recheck the germinate-output, I finally understand what I have
missed. I missed containerd-app and runc-app packages. When I talked to
@lucaskanashiro last time, I thought it's fine that he wants to lock
containerd and runc on golang-1.21 because it's fine to use build-deps
from universe for main packages. But I forgot that containerd and runc
have Built-Using field which still references golang-1.21!

I've uploaded a 1.9.16 fwupd and 0.3.18 libxmlb (build-dependency for
fwpud 1.9.16) to the archive for an SRU team member to review. It
should fall under
https://launchpad.net/~superm1/+archive/ubuntu/uefi/+packages

I've got build logs and a diff of the uploads posted at this PPA as well:
https://launchpad.net/~superm1/+archive/ubuntu/uefi/+packages

[Bug 2061910] [NEW] lxd-installer should default to pulling LXD from the default channel

2024-04-16 Thread Simon Déziel
Public bug reported:

If `lxd-installer` cannot figure which LXD snap channel to use, it
currently defaults to pulling from `latest/stable`. `latest/stable` is a
moving target as new LXD versions are pushed to it on a monthly basis.
`lxd-installer`'s target audience are those casually running `lxc`
command without first evaluating which snap channel is better for them
based on the upstream doc:
https://documentation.ubuntu.com/lxd/en/latest/installing/#choose-your-
release

Since LXD doesn't allow downgrading, it is best to default to an LTS
version. That is why LXD upstream recently changed the default channel
to be the one pulling LXD 5.21 LTS.

** Affects: lxd-installer (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided

[Bug 2060817] Re: gnome-initial-setup hardcoded to Ubuntu branding, not overridable

2024-04-16 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
Jeremy,

> Ubuntu Pro definitely applies to flavors.

I, as well as the flavor leads, need to hear this directly from a member
of the Ubuntu Pro team. Hearing this from you means nothing as I've told
you before. You do not represent the Ubuntu Pro team.

> gnome-initial-setup dropping gnome-online-accounts was an upstream
decision. By using the default web browser instead of a webkitgtk popup,
it fixed lots of existing bugs and future bugs when Google or Microsoft
change their protocols.

Understandable, and this was communicated, but we also discussed that
we'd find ways to avoid this downstream. Apparently that didn't matter.

> transition began
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-initial-setup/46~alpha-2ubuntu1

Yet never landed in Edubuntu's ISO image.

Re: [Bug 2061912] [NEW] After a very recent update most browsers are not able to load webpages in Ubuntu 24.04

2024-04-16 Thread Nicolás Abel Carbone
I could narrow down the problem to linux-lowlatency 6.8.0-25.25.3.
Before updating to Ubuntu 24.04 I had the lowlatency kernel installed. When
updating it reverted back to generic and the last update installed
linux-lowlatency 6.8.0-25.25.3, which seems to have generated the bug.

Uninstalling the lowlatency kernel and running on the generic solves the
issue.
