[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 776904] [NEW] Application windows not redrawn, appears unresponsive

2011-05-04 Thread Lassi Marttala
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Yesterday I upgraded to Natty. Unity was counterproductive for my usage,
so I switched back to gnome-classic interface. I haven't reproduced this
in unity. I didn't really try.

In normal use, application interfaces frozen very often. At first I thought
this was an input problem, but if I resize a frozen window, I notice that it
has accepted all my input and appears normal. So to me it seems that windows
just fail to invalidate and/or redraw themselves.
This happens most often after alt-tabbing from application to another.
This is not consistent thought. I haven't been able to pin-point what exactly
causes this.

I have been able to continue using an application every time it has
appeared frozen this way, after I resize the window. So, atleast that
seems consistent :P

I do understand that this might be a gnome problem and not X.org problem, but
without further expertise I am unable to correctly address this bug report.
Feel free to reassign as you see fit.
Thanks for the great work!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 763005] Re: Fglrx with Compiz's Sync to Vblank makes Unity/Compiz plugins to crawl

2011-05-04 Thread robinl
@Felix: Thanks for the suggestion. That fixes the the fgl_glxgears
update issue but the whole system still feels slower than before. The
Compiz window repaint problem is still there - it would redraw fairly
often if I move the mouse slowly while moving a window around but if I
start moving it quickly it the image would stop to repaint and stay at
one place until I slow down my mouse again. All during this time the
mouse cursor repaints without any visible slowdown. I tried to record a
video of it happening but it didn't work with xvidcap, probably due to
compiz.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 776946] [NEW] xinput_calibrator shows incorrect path for xorg.conf.d

2011-05-04 Thread Luke Fielke
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xinput-calibrator

The xinput_calibrator program displays an xorg conf file snippet to store the
calibration values. It shows a path of:
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/
however in Natty this directory seems to now be located at:
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/

As the path is different, this is a confusing instruction.

I have confirmed that saving the snippet in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/
retains the calibration over reboots, as expected.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 776904] Re: Application windows not redrawn, appears unresponsive

2011-05-04 Thread Lassi Marttala
I was using Static Application Switcher with as-fast-as-possible settings.
I switched to shift-switcher in compiz-config which seems to have alleviated
the problem.

It seems to me this is actually bug in compiz-plugins or compiz.

Could someone transfer this to compiz for consideration?

I still want to use the non-intrusive static application switcher :)

Quote from Peter Laird, This is a tangent, but you can extract the
content of your old notes via:

cat ~/.gnome2/stickynotes_applet

Or just browse via Nautilus and open the xml file in gedit. I have
added xpad, and set it to run at start up, does the job for me. (see, I
didn't give up after all.)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 526955] Re: NVIDIA X Server configuration not working

2011-05-04 Thread David Fraser
Re comment 6: I get this in Maverick too. I've found the advice in this forum
post helpful: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1047029
Basically you can use the command-line to tell nvidia-settings to reset which
displays are present. It then properly forgets about the old display and allows
you to use the dialog to detect the new one. I'm using the latest packaged
drivers (260.19.06-0ubuntu1)
Here's a short script that should reset to only using the laptop's local LCD:

#!/bin/bash
echo Current display status
nvidia-settings -d -q AssociatedDisplays
echo Configuring to only know about LCD display
nvidia-settings -a AssociatedDisplays=0x0001
echo Updated display status
nvidia-settings -d -q AssociatedDisplays

2011-05-04 Thread patman0623
I am getting this issue frequently, but not every time I close the lid.
My laptop is indeed plugged in, and the only solution thus far has been
to pull up the terminal via ctrl-alt-F1 and force close Xorg. I find it
important to note that this did not occur in any form until my upgrade
to Natty.

Interestingly, I am also using an Intel 945 GM chipset and a dual-core
32-bit processor, but I am using a Dell Latitude d620.

If anyone wants more information, I'll be glad to provide it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 770313] Re: nvidia proprietay driver crash in dual card configuration

2011-05-04 Thread Bas van Schaik
Now there is: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=162176

Note that the problem is rather serious on Ubuntu 11.04, as it is not
possible to use older drivers as a workaround. The new Natty xorg-
packages use ABI 10.0, which is only supported by the nVidia drivers =
270.41.06.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 776978] [NEW] everything on screen is garbled apart from the top bar (2 monitors, different resolutions, unity, natty)

2011-05-04 Thread Sabin Iacob
Public bug reported:

I'm not the original author of the question, but I've got the exact same
problem (Acer Aspire One, 1280x720 + 1440x900 external); this is the main thing
that keeps me on Lucid (it's the gf's laptop I am experimenting with)

Hello,

I'm working with a portable computer, with another screen attached to
the vga port. I work with both screens.

I updated Ubuntu desktop from 10.10 to 11.04. After the update, both
screens were corrupted, excepted the upper bar. When I've disconnected
the external monitor and rebooted, everything worked file. Each time I
tried to reconnect the external monitor, both screens were unreadable,
excepted (sometimes) the upper bar and the new launchbar at the left of
the screen.

If i shake the mouse on the screen, some fields are redrawn and become
visible.

I've then installed 11.04 from scratch (reformat and reinstall). The
problem is the same.

The screen on the portable computer is 1400x1050, and the external
screen is 1680(?) x 1050

[Just for completeness, my home directory is on another partition. So
if something about displays were written to that directory by ubuntu
10.10 (and is now incompatible with 11.04), I don't know were it is, and
don't know how to remove it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 763005] Re: Fglrx with Compiz's Sync to Vblank makes Unity/Compiz plugins to crawl

2011-05-04 Thread gunwald
I can confirm big problems fglrx and new compiz version. I am using a
Radeon 4200 onboard device. But I cant confirm that disabling the v-sync
option in CCSM and compiz increases the situation. Its rather the
opposite. With this option disabled I have to wait some seconds until a
window follows my cursor! With vsync enabled it works a bit better, so
its usable, but very much slower than with 10.10. I have for example to
switch of compiz to play video fluently. Is there some hope that there
will be a fix for that soon? If not, I really will have a look for
another distribution. Can not understand why Canonical publishes a bad
working version of compiz!

2011-05-04 Thread bagl0312
Look here:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/768275/comments/5

I found that disabling fglrx and using the open source drivers improves
a lot the speed for my card:

01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS880 [Radeon HD
4200]

Of course also proprietary drivers should work, but the above is a good
solution

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 777020] [NEW] Disabling LCD disables the HDMI monitor too

2011-05-04 Thread Arie Skliarouk
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

The laptop Dell Studio 1569
(http://www.linlap.com/wiki/dell+studio+1569) has VGA compatible
controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics
Controller (rev 12) VGA card. If I use both LCD and external HDMI-
connected monitor (in panorama mode) - both LCD and the HDMI screen work
properly.

If I disable the LCD (Administration-Monitors-Select LCD-Select
Off-press Apply), then *both* LCD and HDMI monitor become black! VNC
session to the laptop from a different machine shows everything as if
the LCD was disabled and the HDMI became my primary desktop.

The feature worked in maverick and stopped working in natty.

Had a similar bug on my ThinkPad x201.

Installing 2.6.39 kernel as suggested solved the frequent crashes, but certain

Finally, the workaround I found for this was to delete ~/.config/monitors.xml

2011-05-04 Thread Robin.He
Hi @Bryce, thank you for your information. Is that means I should manually
install some PPA kernel and test it? I'd try it later.
For the past few days, my system locked several times, then, it's more and more
clearly shows that: the froze almost always occurred with my LibraOffice Calc (
very strange ). I tested three system options:
1. Ubuntu Classic Environment,
2. Ubuntu Classic Environment (No Effect).
3. Ubuntu Class Environment with your new intel driver. ( upgrade by official
apt).
The frozen always happened within 3 minute after I start LibraOffice. If I
start LibraOffice Calc for just few seconds and close it immediately, after
that the frozen won't occurred. But if I want use LibraOffice Calc for a long
time, I MUST set 'fbdev' as my default graphics driver, otherwise the will
occurred soon.
In the past few days, the apport bug collection tool did not shows up after
everytime this bug occurred, I don't know why until I did some research on
google, it told me I should modify my configuration in /etc/default/apport,
and set the default value as '1', hehe. Now I've submitted a new bug here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/777028 . It might contains
some useful information for you guys.
If you have any suggestions or advice, please contact me or leave a message
here. If you want more frozen bug report, please let me know.
Thank you for all your kindness help.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 747484] Re: Synaptics touchpad/touchstick not detected on Dell Latitude E6410

2011-05-04 Thread Ed S
Hi Rick
it would be annoying to have this bug auto-closed just because a new version
of ubuntu came out. You can use http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ to make a
bootable USB stick very easily, and then update this bug with collected data
from 11.04 Natty.

  please do!

Cheers
Ed

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 745112] Re: [arrandale] desktop is messed up (goes black) when laptop is docked with two external 1920x1200 monitors (x86_64)

2011-05-04 Thread jeffbl
I also had to delete my monitors.xml on my thinkpad x201. I've also
found that putting one display above the other is a recipe for disaster
- Chrome especially freaks out and makes a short window that can't be
expanded, rendering it useless, and all my windows lose their titlebars
routinely. Putting my displays side-by-side has far fewer problems. I
suspect that I triggered this bug by fiddling with my monitors one on
top of the other. I haven't gotten it into a bad state with the monitors
side-by-side.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 763005] Re: Fglrx with Compiz's Sync to Vblank makes Unity/Compiz plugins to crawl

2011-05-04 Thread Stefanauss
Unfortunately it's not a solution. Open driver has major power management
issues that prevent many people to use it. See bug 563156.
It's a real shame because it's true, performance-wise (non-gaming) radeon
driver has no issues whatsoever.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 772994] Re: After 10.10 upgrade to 11.04 there is no visual effects

2011-05-04 Thread Richard Driscoll
I can confirm that with an AMD Athlon X2 and on-board Nvidia 6150 GPU.

1. The system-preferences-appearance menu item does not offer any
visual effects options.

2. The system-administration-additional_drivers menu item says the
recommended Nvidia driver is activated but not currently in use.

Clearly a bug.

2011-05-04 Thread Cas
Please be aware that there is a separate LP Bug #605567 that deals with
Launchpad.net causing Firefox to slow down.

Whether at the technical level it is the same I am not sure however the
examples at the top of this bug all work fine for me so I consider a
separate bug necessary for the Launchpad.net issue to avoid confusion.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 737602] Re: [g45] page flipping needs to be disabled (for now) on GM45 chipset

2011-05-04 Thread Roman
I experience X hang-ups in KDE, occuring each time my screensaver (euphoria) is
interrupted.
The KWin option Suspend desktop effects for fullscreen windows should be
ticked on.
If this option is ticked off, no problem occures.

I looked in XOrg.0.log and found the following lines there:
[ 18468.582] (WW) intel(0): flip queue failed: Device or resource busy
[ 18468.582] (WW) intel(0): Page flip failed: Device or resource busy
and then X hang.

I have 82G33/G31 Express integrated Graphics Controller, therefore this video
card dislikes page flipping too.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 661248] Re: Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT doesn't work with nvidia-current 260

2011-05-04 Thread Aaron Plattner
I think that's the wrong resource0 file (for bus 0 device 2, rather than bus 2
device 0). Probably easier to use the symlinks:
/sys/bus/pci/devices/:02:00.0/resource0

However, you can't call read() on those files, they can only be mmap'd.
/dev/mem should work, though. I would recommend reading a whole page:
dd if=/dev/mem of=asdf bs=4096 skip=1036288 count=1

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 752445] Re: Intermittent white window contents when maximizing/switching windows

2011-05-04 Thread ndasusers
Rats.

I loaded synaptic and chose to remove nvidia 270 and install 173 and had
all kinds of problems.

When I rebooted, the loging screen was only one thin line of display at
the top of the monitor and all the rest was black.

I could reboot with default display from the recovery mode, and used the
additional driver tool to go back to nvidia-current and the blank
windows are back. If I open the firefox windows the third one is blank.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 567696] Re: [Radeon] [Lucid] [mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop

2011-05-04 Thread Rich
Same as funicorn. 1-3 time a day, X seems to randomly freeze. The
mouse still moves but the screen stays frozen. I'm on a Thinkpad W510
(Intel i7 and Nvidia Quatro card). I was experiencing this on 10.10,
and it's still with me after a 11.04 upgrade. Here's the relevant
portion of Xorg.0.log:

Sometimes the first line (xkmfile) appears and sometimes it doesn't.
There doesn't seem to be anything in the kern.log around the time of the
X crash.

If anybody knows of a workaround, I'm all ears. This is incredibly
frustrating!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 752445] Re: Intermittent white window contents when maximizing/switching windows

2011-05-04 Thread ndasusers
I found a workaround for me!

I log out, then choose my login and down below I select Classic (No
effects) and now all windows seem to work with no blank screens.

5 or six firefox windows are ok.

and resizing the text editors is working.

I will still appreciate any advice, but I will be fine to operate like
this for now. I don't like the Ubuntu login tool bar on the left anyway.

Why can we move that think to the bottom like every other window
manager?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 745608] Re: [915GM] font corruption on Intel GMA900

2011-05-04 Thread Ferry Toth
Yes I have it too on Eepc 900 and also on desktop with 'Intel
Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02). All with
Kubuntu.

See attachment following.

Had the same in Debian Squeeze. (same driver I guess, and older KDE).

Do not see the problem on Natty Kubuntu with Nvidia card.
