[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 2064017] [NEW] Xserver Display flickers when mouse pointer is inside narrow horizontal range band (kernel related)
You have been subscribed to a public bug: My machine information is following : HP EliteBook 840 G3 Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-6200U CPU @ 2.30GHz VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Skylake GT2 [HD Graphics 520] xrandr -q active mode on laptop display : 1368x768 60.01 Tried using 6.8.8-060808 kernel (instead of the lubuntu 24.04 default shipped kernel 6.8.0-31), same issue. Rolling back the kernel to 6.7 fixed the problem,maybe there were some video driver changes from kernel 6.7 to 6.8 ? While using the 6.8 kernel I did some experiments: disabled picom in startup , no effect Tried changing display resolution, just moves vertical position of band. (at the above resolution 1368x768 vertical mouse pointer flicker range is around 640 ( measured running watch -t -n 0.0001 xdotool getmouselocation from a bash terminal) Tried moving refresh rate slightly around 60 Hz by creating a new modeline using cvt tool and adding new mode with xrandr, no effect. tried connecting external display on laptop VGA port and duplicating screen and the issue seems to disappear. tried capturing a video of the desktop using ffmpeg with x11grab, but it does not show the issue. When scaling some windows in some programs down horizontal lines appear
that seem to be part of the texture memory somewhere else on the screen.
This only occurs in some programs like nautilus and gedit, but not in
others like terminal or Firefox.
It did however occur when I opened the dialog in firefox to attach the
screen capture.

The display keeps freezing. Sometime mouse keeps freezing. Sometime
after a sleep, when the laptop wake ups, the display not working or it
remain blank. again I have to restart it. It is very annoying as your
workspace i.e. all the opened apps got deleted. Again you have to
restart. It hampers the work. I am using NVIDIA driver 535 (tested)
display driver, which is recommended. I have gtx 1650 graphics. Ryzen 5
4000 series processor.

(Radeon™ Vega 3 Graphics) Firefox and Chromium browsers had their windows corrupted to the point where they were unreadable. I think this is an xorg bug, because when I installed Wayland and logged in with a Wayland session, the browsers displayed correctly. Same behaviour with an Athlon 220GE. After installing ubuntu graphics-drivers ppa nvidia-550 driver, the bug
appears.
When there are several windows on top of each other, clicking within the
topmost window, the window seems to disappear. Actually, the window is
still there, but just goes behind another window, that comes in front of
the clicked window. The program in the window that is clicked will not
notice the click.
This does not happen with all programs. Mines is a good example
program. If the window fills full screen, this happens, but if it is
smaller, only partially covering the screen, it does not happen.

You have been subscribed to a public bug: CPU is going almost 100% and videos feel laggy. Playing just one video on youtube , the cpu goes to almost 70% usage and then if 2 or 3 tabs are opened for video playback, the cpu goes to 100% usage. Its a recent phenomenon. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling nvidia drivers, still the same issue. I've been using 23.04 for a few months, and experienced a total system
hang occasionally when sharing my screen over Zoom or Google Meet
(running on Google Chrome).
At first it hangs and then it periodically flashes like it's trying
(unsuccessfully) to recover; I've got 3 screens (including the laptop's
internal one) and each attempt shows something different (at first it
tries to recover the contents of all 3 screens, then it shows only one
of them, and then it shows the same content on all 3, but it never gets
responsive).
I've recently upgraded to 23.10, hoping a new kernel would help the
situation. It's only gotten considerably worse now; it hangs sometimes
just when opening Zoom; it's somehow easier to reproduce with Google
Chrome. Interestingly, it fails quickly and reliably now when enabling
my webcam (with special effects). It started hanging badly when using
Google Maps as well.
For all these behaviors, I suspect amdgpu is to blame (I'm running on
Renoir, 4750U Pro); `dmesg` and `journalctl` didn't seem to show
anything interesting.
Any tips about debugging this further?

I recently upgraded a Dell OptiPlex 7000 from 23.04 to 23.10 and a new
install of Ubuntu 23.10 on a fresh Dell Latitude 7440. Both are now
unstable, regularly crashing out of gnome with a full plain white screen
with a sad terminal and "Oh no! Something has gone wrong." and the only
option being to Log Out.
It is regularly triggered when starting up totem/video or rhythmbox and
youtube in a browser, so perhaps audio or video related on both X and
Wayland. Also can be triggered on X with `Alt-F2 r`.
Has been happening for 2 weeks, regularly updating the system with
`wajig update; wajig distupgrade`. The issue remains.

You have been subscribed to a public bug: Today I booted up and the update manager came to inform me I had updates (system was recently updated). I chose to do them because I'm having issues with HDMI audio (and audio in general, only headset via USB works) and it is an NVIDIA GPU. However after reboot, the login screen is just blank with only the gray background. It is still the GUI but just no login box/logo/anything else. I chose xorg as the issue but I'm not certain of it. Not sure how to troubleshoot this as I'm unfamiliar with the inner workings of this. I have since attempted to reinstall the NVIDIA drivers using apt purge ~nnvidia and then reinstalling with ubuntu-drivers autoinstall, as well as reinstalling ubuntu-desktop and related components. I can still log in via terminal. Hello.
My bug, if it is one, is in Wayland, or more likely in new desktop icon
management thingy, which was introduced with one of the last Ubuntu versions.
I can't navigate the "Show Applications" menu with the keyboard when I go into
a subfolder. This means that I can navigate in "Show Applications" with the
keyboard as long as I stay at the top level. But when I go to a folder that
contains several programs, such as the "Utilities" folder, the keyboard
navigation no longer works. The cursor will stuck no matter which arrow key I
press. Even the Tab key is of no use. I've already searched for this problem on
the Internet, but couldn't find it. Either I'm the only one who has this
problem, or most others simply prefer to use the mouse to navigate. I only use
the keyboard when possible. I am a heavy keyboard/hotkey user.
The problem has existed for me for a long time. It either came with the switch
to Wayland or with the switch to the new desktop icon management thingy. It's
just a small problem, but for a massive keyboard user, it's really annoying.
And definitely also for people who can't use a mouse.
