Re: [videoblogging] Flip Mino HD from FCP to h.264 for Blip/youtube

2009-07-08 Thread ryanne hodson
hey robin
looks like you have a good workflow going
the one snag looks like the size of your quicktime file coming out of compressor
i personally have had issues with compressor
and use these as my compression settings-
http://freevlog.org/content/ryannes-favorite-compression-settings

your file should not be as big as 1.4 gigs, should be in the lower MB
range (depending on the length anyway)
blip will thank you for compressing your vids smaller too!

let me know if you need more help

I'm new to this group and so happy with my Flip Mino HD. Searching the

wondering if there is such a thing as a magic combination of settings for
Flip HD media making its way though MPEG Streamclip, fcp, and compressor to
crosspost videos from Blip that are 8 min in length to my indexhibit.org
website. Is there any way to adjust what Im doing (workflow below) to make
the videos smaller and not sacrifice image quality? The perennial
 question

What settings do you use for Flip Mino HD. Thus far this is my workflow:

 MpegStreamclip:
Batch convert using Apple Intermediate Codec at Best / Audio Stereo 48khz,
 1280 x 720 (unscaled)

 Into FCP:
 Sequence settings:
 1280 x 720 (HDTV 720p 16:9)
 square
 none
 30
 AIC

 Through Compressor:
 h.264 300 kbs
 640 x 360
 Data rate 2.000
 key frame: auto
 fast start: on
 frame rate: current
 frame controls: off
 multi pass: on
 frame reorder: on

This creates a file size of 1.41 GB The image quality of the flash video on
 Blip looks
horrible, and the gorgeous QT video on Blip takes ions to load on my
 indexhibit website.

 Kind thanks for any help.

I think it’s weird that there’s nothing between iMovie 06 and Final
Cut Pro. iMovie 08 and 09 is way to basic, and doesn’t have a good
 enough precision.
I loved iMovie 06. Easy to use and fast. iMovie 08 and 09 works
better with family movies. At least that’s my opinion.

I've been using iMovie HD 06 (6.0.3) since 2006 with Sony FX1 (HDV,
analog tape), it's great. I heard some complaints on this group
about later versions of iMovie being dumbed down.

And since iMovie 08 seems to be devoid of any of the good movie and
audio editing features that 06 had, I’m wondering what other folks
are using now if they want to have a good set of editing tools
 without going to professional software.

I need geotagging for my photos, which will then be bulk uploaded to
Flickr, with Flickr uploader. iPhoto 09 is getting good review for
geotagging, so I'm considering upgrading to iLife '09. Anybody have a
violent reaction to iMovie 07, 08, or 09?

 http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090404003545AAOYVCP
Sorry but iMovie HD is no longer available as a download.
Apple removed it with the introduction of iLife and iMovie 09.
The links that Apple still has on its download site are only
upgrades to the original version 6 which you must have on your
 computer before it will work.
Now the only way that you might still be able to get iMovie HD is to
find someone that has an older mac and still has the iLife 06
 installation disc.
Or I have seen iLife 06 discs for sale on eBay.
Why don't you upgrade to iLife 09 and the new iMovie 09.
It has all the special effects back again.
 Regards, Zyfert

So, I can upgrade to iLife 09, install iMovie HD '06 from my discs?
 Yes, according to:

 http://muvipix.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=28t=5089

Anybody else doing this: dual copies of iMovie HD 06 iMovie 09?

just to add to this
the flip usually plays nice on the mac if you've installed the codec that
came on the camera
i believe it's the 3ivx codec
however it doesn't play or import into iMovie 09 from what i've tried
(though it converts great in imovie 06, damnit apple)
though i need to update to the newest imovie, maybe they've added support
for flip, which would be radical

this is the camera i would also highly recommend.
it has audio in and out, does widescreen
and it's cheap!!!
rocks as a DV deck or a keep-in-your-bag-at-all-times camera.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Xacti Hd1000

2008-05-08 Thread ryanne hodson
when mary and i 'fixed' this issue
we replaced the most recent h.264 qt component with the old version
from the xacti CD
i'm thinking that when sanyo released this HD1000 camera
that the qt component was working on a mac with it's codec
but then qt got updated and that is no longer the case.

if you replace the component with the one on the CD that came with the camera
(though it's buried in something called archive etc etc)
then you can see the footage.
it's weird

i do want to make a tutorial
but i need a clip from someone
does anyone have one that i can grab to use for a tutorial?

It may be Apple's fault rather than Sanyo, Id like to find out.

Also that workaround to use an older h264 component may work, but it could

[videoblogging] Next week: FCC Hearing on the Future of the Internet

just a reminder of some of the save the internet hearings/events happening
in the SF Bay area next week!

Dear ryanne,

*The FCC is holding a public hearing at Stanford. Make your voice heard: *

*Attend the Hearing*http://free.convio.net/site/R?i=pnxfSpGubaZXAwp-eTdInA..

Next week, the Bay Area will host a landmark event on the future of the
Internet -- and you're invited.

All five FCC commissioners are coming to Stanford University on Thursday,
April 17, to hear from the public about recent efforts by powerful phone and
cable companies to block and censor the Internet.

*WHAT:* A Public Hearing on the Future of the Internet
*WHEN:* Thursday, April 17, 2008
*TIME:* 12:00 - 7:00 p.m.
*WHERE:* Stanford University, Dinkelspiel Auditorium

For the latest information, visit:
http://free.convio.net/site/R?i=L6EQoBM-fm2mJmP_leXwKw..
www.savetheinternet.com/=stanford

It's time we all took a stand for Internet freedom. Local groups have
organized a series of community meetings where you can meet other people who
are speaking out for a free and open Internet, learn more about the issue,
and even prepare your own testimony for the FCC:

*Sunday, April 13, 4:00 - 6:00 p.m.*
The Media Center
900 San Antonio Road, Palo Alto

*Monday, April 14, 6:00 - 7:30 p.m.*
KPFA-FM 94.1
1929 Martin Luther King Way, Berkeley

*Tuesday, April 15, 4:30 - 6:30 p.m.*
Bay Area Video Coalition
2727 Mariposa Street, 2nd Floor, San Francisco

*Wednesday, April 16, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.*
One East Palo Alto Office
1798 Bay Road, East Palo Alto

For directions, maps, and more information, visit:
http://free.convio.net/site/R?i=6BFjEDT8l-Swz5rsqQxKOg..
www.savetheinternet.com/=stanford_workshops.

With so much at stake, it's encouraging that the FCC is seeking public
feedback. But at the agency's last hearing near Boston, cable giant Comcast
paid people off the street to fill the seats. As a result, more than 100
local citizens were turned away at the door.

We need to show Comcast and other would-be gatekeepers that the public will
not be blocked or silenced. Come to Stanford and be heard!

Dear ryanne,

*The FCC is holding a public hearing at Stanford. Make your voice heard: *

*Attend the Hearing*http://free.convio.net/site/R?i=SNCcnQV0xJOev8GDubV7dw..

Comcast, ATT and Verizon have given us a glimpse of a world without
Internet freedom, and it's a chilling sight.

In recent months, these companies have been caught blocking, filtering and
spying on your Internet activities. This month we have a chance to stop them
from rolling back our online freedoms. In a rare move, all five FCC
commissioners are coming to California to hear from you.

*WHAT:* A Public Hearing on the Future of the Internet

The question before us is simple: Will we have a closed Internet controlled
by a small handful of giant corporations, or an open Internet controlled by
the people who use it?

The FCC hearing is one of our best chances to tell Washington policymakers
that the Internet must remain open. Help us spread the word about this
important event.

At the FCC's first hearing in Boston, Comcast was caught paying seat-fillers
to pack the room and keep out the public (we have the
proofhttp://free.convio.net/site/R?i=qZleZJfLSo7nqBQkUrX5xQ..).
Now is the chance for us to fill the room with real people who care about
innovation, competition, free speech and civil rights online. Will you

*Dear WGBH Lab Member,*

Thanks to your continued support, The Lab's recent Open Calls have been a
tremendous success! But rather than sit back and relax, we're proud to
announce a new call for short films: Watch Over Me.

This latest Call focuses on a subject that is often ignored in today's
society -- caring for elderly parents and relatives. We invite you to show
us, in a new and creative way, how caring for an elderly relative affects
the lives of all involved. Offer us a fresh perspective in a completed,
3-minute video story and your short may be selected to broadcast nationally
with Caring for Your Parents, a documentary by award-winning filmmaker and
Frontline producer Michael Kirk. Caring for Your Parents, which airs in
April on PBS, explores the lives of five American families caring for aging
parents and the struggles they confront.

Completed shorts are being accepted now through February 19th.

i really like chip in as well
because it's got sweet graphic design
and it's easy to put on any site

the things i wish it had:
-link backs to donators
-design customize-ablity
-monthly pledge option

show in a box crew (markus sandy mostly)
is further developing pledge drive to have these things
(which is the wordpress plug in we built for have money will vlog):

http://showinabox.tv/download/pledge-drive/

this will be fully customize-able to your site
and it'll have links back (like credits!) to all your donators

see what it looked like on HMWV:

Re: [videoblogging] Poster Image sizing for Show In A Box

2008-01-05 Thread ryanne hodson
heya jimmy
if you compare your blog to verdi's
http://www.jchtv.com/
and
http://michaelverdi.com/
you have 2 sidebars and verdi has 1
which makes his large poster image fit better.

it looks like your vids are 480 wide
you might want to match that to the poster image
and make the image also 480 wide
that should fit nicely on your blog, even with 2 sidebars.
or if you want to keep it at least that big
maybe resize a little smaller to 600 px wide
that'll still be large, but will probably fit better in your blog post.

also if you have other concerns
you can join the SIAB list as well:

Re: [videoblogging] video gallery wordpress plugin?

2008-01-03 Thread ryanne hodson

The Journal format is becoming less and less useful.

 Why?

i think a better way to state this is that the journal format is less useful
for some people or some applications.
i like the journal format for some things.
but for others, it's limiting
like having a gallery of featured work...
where/how can people get that?
i know there are some places like vodpod that do this well
but what if i wanted that in wordpress on my front page?
or as a gallery page.

this is an ongoing discussion on the SIAB list as well
how do we make WP themes more video centric
or make your videos stand out more?
have your archive come to life.and not get lost.

 I settled on using Justin
 Tadlock's theme, Visionary
 http://justintadlock.com/archives/2007/11/04/visionary-wordpress-theme
. It's meant to be more of a newspaper format, but I'm finding that
the excerpts with thumbnails on the front page provide an excellent
alternative to a traditional gallery, and allows me to feature what I
 want on the home page.

This is my site (still building, clip-by-clip): http://www.toxicpop.tv
 http://www.toxicpop.tv

ah, yes
this theme looks sweet with video!!
i'm still wanting that to happen on RIH
to have my blog posts show up under my most current video.
i know it's possible
but i have a custom theme
and i have no idea how to make that happen without redoing another theme.
not something i want to do.

Re: [videoblogging] video gallery wordpress plugin?

2008-01-03 Thread ryanne hodson
yeah exactly what schlomo said
the cool thing about the Show In A Box plugin 'related videos'
does just this
as you can see here:

http://ryanishungry.com/2007/12/31/alemany-farm-san-francisco-urban-farming/

we've made several videos related to urban farming
that are showing up on the sidebar
so you know how these things relate and that this is an ongoing subject on
our site.

i think we're trying to push this even further
what if we wanted a gallery of urban farming vids
or a thumbnail page that stuff just played on
i recently hand coded something like this, it was a pain
and i wish it could have been more automatic and elegant:

http://preventhumantrafficking.org/videos/

blog format was not the best way to present a body of visual work. It
 works
for text since I can text-link to a related post within the sentence I'm
referrencing, but not the same with video.
For instance, its' raining here in SF right now and I know I have a good 3
vids related to rain/weather ennui. I want something that feels like trace
memories in my posts. I want to show how *this* video has elements of
*that* video... and not in just a typical historic way; I want it to show
 it
in remembrance of the past sort of way.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Best Mac app for tweaking video sound

2008-01-01 Thread ryanne hodson
a tool i love and use to boost the sound in lots of my RyanIsHungry videos
is The Levelator:

http://www.conversationsnetwork.org/levelator/

i basically levels all your audio tracks to be the same
so if some audio is low and some is high, it makes it all one
and at the same time it boosts it all up.

which sometimes is bad when some audio is really really low
because it'll boost the room tone or surrounding ambient noise too.
but it works great for what i need it for
which is leveling people's voices over a period of time
(most interviews start quiet, then the person gets passionate)

workflow is, you make an aiff file out of final cut audio (or garage band or
audacity or where ever you're working)
and throw it into levelator and then bring it back in to your sequence.

thanks to eddie codel for pointing it out to me a few months back
and thanks to doug kaye for building it!

i love it.
oh and it's free.

On Dec 31, 2007 9:31 PM, Christopher Polack [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I tried bringing the sound file into GarageBand, but - for reasons
that elude me - GarageBand sped the track up so that my actress

  out how to fix it.

This will happen when the sample rate is changed. Odds are you're
using a Mini DV camera and the audio rate is set to 12bit by default.
Go into it's settings and set it to 16bit. In order for GB to play the
track, it converted the file to a higher rate and you get chipmonks.
I'm glad you found a work around.

I remember someone saying that you have to re-write the XML each time

Is that true? Is there an automated way of doing it? I wonder if
there is another way to make the xml feed that automatically scans the
page for new content and updates - or is it something that I have to
physically do by hand each time there is a new entry, be it written or

I know these are a lot of newbie questions, so I hope you don't mind.

i don't see any comments on that post 'beating up' on anyone.
ok ok there were some harsh words between jeffery and calcanis, yeah

cheryl criticized their show.
criticism is inherent in blogging and vlogging,
we've all experienced it (ugh, good and bad),
we've all grown from it. ( right?)

people are passionate about this stuff
people want to talk about this stuff
and i think that's a good thing.

we're all taking chances with putting our work out there
trying to make money
and it's not always easy to talk about
but i think the discussion over there has been pretty civil.

always remember sticking up for me and he has my undying respect because
 of
that. How many of you said stop it when this latest blog post came out
beating up on Zadi's show? I can look at all the comments to see how many
 of
the 2,000 who are hanging out here. Not many. About the same number who
stood up when the target was me or PodTech. Despite PodTech investing
hundreds of thousands of dollars in this community. Tonight it's not about
PodTech, but Zadi has invested tons of hours in this community and has
evangelized it on many a stage that I've witnessed. So, where are the ones
who stood up for her today? Not many.

A community becomes how it treats its leaders. This one isn't well.

 what potential should we have?

I don't know anymore. I find that I'm doing less and less videoblogging
and more and more video streaming. http://www.qik.com http://www.qik.com/

and http://www.mogulus.com http://www.mogulus.com/ is totally changing
how I think video on the Internet will be done. This community used to be
fun. But the fun is happening over on Seesmic where they taunt newcomers
 to
dance. Not sure how a community changes its stripes once it's given up
 that
 high ground.

Sorry for being a killjoy on this weekend before Christmas, but this

DRM-content can coexist quite peacfully with all the non-DRM uses of
stuff, but yes, there are reasons why people would want to back an
open format that is free in multiple senses of the word.

An example of people wanting to switch away from h264 in future would
be if they put some silly licenses costs on content creators who use
h264, when these terms are updated in 2010 or something.

Or yeah if Adobe went insane and did something to flash player that
made people not want it installed on their machines.

If these sorts of things dont happen, then there arent too many
reasons to assume ogg will go massive, but its nice to have it around
and support for it in many tools, it is based on good principals and
could be important in the future, depends how many corporations
behave, and we know from human experience that we cant bank on them
 always being good corporate citizens.

Am I right to assume the Ogg Theora video playback is provided by this
 java app?

 http://www.flumotion.net/cortado/

Ive joined the showinabox google group but havent had a moment to post
there yet, will take most of m future input on this stuff otver there
 from now on.

I just encoded my first ogg file, using this quicktime plugin stuff:

 http://xiph.org/quicktime/download.html

It seemed to go ok, but it is late now and Im tired, so I will have to
 stop for tonight.

 Cheers

Enric included an Ogg player in vPIP...so if you provide an Ogg

The big question is: what happens if Flash or Quicktime starts putting
DRM in their codec? or starts putting in limitations we dont want?
There's not much we could do. But Ogg, like wordpress, is infinitely
malleable. Lots of challenges to overcome, but enric did a big thing
by making the Ogg viewing experience seemless.

The new vPIP also has a multiple embed-code generator, or Share.
This lets the viewer choose which video format they want to embed on
 their site.
a person might want the 320x240 Flash version.
someone else might want to embed the 640x480 HD quicktime.
  choices!

this is because imovie converts your .mp4 into DV for editing.
unless you are using the mp4 format for your project
which i've never gotten to work!
this is why imovie rocks with most formats because it converts if first.

p.s. i was wrong about FCP not playing my mp4s. FCP will play all my mp4s
and edit them, but if i put any filters or transitions, it will not render
them
but it will export them fine. odd.
my latest video has some color correction and a fade in and i was all cut in
FCP with the new xacti h.264 mp4 footage:
http://ryanedit.blogspot.com/2007/08/thailand-week-1.html

I started my Live Music Journal video blog (
 http://livemusicjournal.blogspot.com) because I
bought a Sanyo Xacti HD2 and couldn't edit the .mp4 files in FCP, so
 instead, I recorded full
songs from live sets and didn't edit them at all. :)

But still, it's a huge pet peeve that it works without a hitch in the
 consumer software while
the pro software can't handle it. All that extra rendering makes it almost
 useless from a
 work-flow standpoint.

Oh, and I've read that Final Cut Pro 6.0 can't edit .mp4 well, either.
 Bummer. Can we petition
 Apple to change that?

my FCP will not render the h.264 files at all
though they will come into the sequence and are editable
i just can't watch them. which is kind of dumb for editing
but if i'm doing just a quick cut, it's fine and exports fine.

for *actual* editing
i have been converting all clips to dv and editing them that way.
i use QT pro because mpeg streamclip does something weird with the aspect
ratio (it doesnt like going from 640x480 to 720x480) and the quality is a
little darker than QT Pro
so yeah, i do them one by one because my Compressor program is forever
broken and won't launch.
that's my method.
works great, other than it's a wee bit time consuming doing it one by one.

screenshots). If I drag them right to the timeline I don't get the error,
but cannot hear the sound until the clips are fully rendered.

This isn't really a deal breaker, but its (really) annoying to have to
 drag
a bunch of long clips to the time line and render them all just to find
 the
 bits/clips you wanted.

Have others seen this, and if so what (if any) workaround /
 work-flow-adjustments have you made?

 Thanks in advance,

Just took a quick look at the new iMovie that was announced today.

  Info here:
  http://www.apple.com/ilife/imovie/

Totally new interface to make making movies easier.

One thing I noticed was this:

  The YouTube connection.

Is your YouTubeT audience clamoring for more? Send your movie
directly to your YouTubeT account from iMovie so others can enjoy it,
rate it, and leave comments for the director.

We've been asking Apple for this feature for years. Actually, we've
been asking for a BlogThis! feature to allow posting to any blog, but
sending directly to YouTube makes it so easy for people to get
  started with videoblogging.

Since I've been using iMovie a lot more recently, I'll be interested
in trying this out at the Apple Store to see if it can speed up my
workflow. Redoing the iMovie application can only be a good thing.

   Hi Irene,

Yes, I do this with every post.

But it depends on your phone's capabilities. At the most basic
level, you'd have to take the memory card out of your phone and
transfer the file to your computer.

Most new phones allow you to transfer files to a computer by
Bluetooth. Then you post it as you would a normal video file.

For true movlogging, the basic necessity is email. If your phone
contract allows email, you can email the file over your provider's
   data network.
You could just email it to yourself. But the most effective way of
handling the email is to send it to Blip.tv. If you set up an
account with them, they allow you to set up a dedicated mobile email
address to send your files to. When they receive it, they will
automatically transcode it into Flash for easy viewing online. But
more excitingly, you can tell them to automatically crosspost the
video embed code, plus title and description from your email direct
to your blog - Wordpress, Blogger, Myspace, pretty much anything.
   That's what I do.

But I have a phone that allows me to shoot and cut on the phone, then
email the file over a regular wireless network for free (at home or
in a cafe, for instance) to Blip, who then take care of all the
posting as above. That makes it super easy.

Pretty much all social networks - Youtube, Facebook, Myspace, Bebo,
etc - also all allow you to email videos directly to them from your
   phone.

If you need more info, or if I can help you more, let me know.

yeah preserve aspect ratio is a scam!!

365x205 is great for ipod and should work fine without that checked.
if you want a larger format separate from ipod
try 480x270

just nothing in between that and 365x205, oddly enough.

[videoblogging] first months

2007-07-14 Thread ryanne hodson
i found this email to a fellow WGBH editor dated Jan 11th 2005
jean from this post to be exact:
http://ryanedit.blogspot.com/2005/02/dept-of-ed-vs-buster-bunny.html
on my first page of gmails.
it still feel this excited about videoblogging!
thought i'd share-

the videoblogging thing:
yes reinventing the medium.
i was going to say no, but, infact we are.
there is an expanding number of us doing this.
you can watch a bunch more of my pals here:
me-tv.com

my friends peter and jay created this site so you can watch people's
videos all in one place.

what i'm trying to do is to make something better than tv.
better in that it's more accessable and you can talkback instantly.

i am having video conversations with people.
and showing people my world and vice versa.
you cant do that with tv.
you can show, but you cant talk back.
i have a problem with that
so i dug around and found this group of people who thought the same thing.
and here i am.
this has been the most insane month and half of my life.
i've met the most amazing people
and had an outlet to show anything i felt like showing.
also not available on tv.

for a while i was working on zoom, wait, i still am.
and i wanted to pitch a show to pbs.
like a variety show for young adults
with bands and films and crazy independent media things.
but it just got to be too overwhelming and seemed impossible
to get my idea out there and funded.
it just seemed so limited.
and i also dont like having to ask people (tv stations, producers)
what is ok to show.
what will get funded.
what do people want?

so now there is videoblogging.
thank goodness.

keep watching
lets keep talking
i post almost everyday...

i actually really love it.
great in low light
the best sound of a xacti yet

the sound on the HD is terrible IMHO.
it's really blown out and hot. really annoying for a 700$ camera.
the E1 has much better sound though it's not in HD
i still like it so far.
i'll be posting some footage of underwater fun
so y'all can see.

this is a video i shot above water with the E1 though:

The sound quality is pretty poor, however with the HD2 there is an

don't think many of the other Xactis have an external mic jack - but I

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Local Vlog screenings (was: Weekly Video Conference)

2007-06-21 Thread ryanne hodson
yeah i've started thinking about doing screenings
where people actually read the blog post and project the page
and then play the video
so you get a sense of how one might actually navigate from video to video.

this would give people a better understanding of how people are
communicating through blogs.
might even motivate them to go make one themselves.
which is always key!

I find this quite an interesting thread, and especially in the wake of
Pixelodeon, I find it interesting/strange/concerning/exciting that
there is an interest in taking these small format works and putting
them up on the big screen. Watching video on a big screen with a
group audience vastly changes the way we experience the moving image,
so it really takes the videos out of the original context. I'm not
saying that's good or bad (though at Pixelodeon I think many of us
experienced how wonderful that can be. Long live the movie theater!),
nor do I have any particularly well formed thoughts on that at the
moment, but I thought I'd throw it out there since it hasn't been
  addressed.

i wanted to take a another stab at answering jen's point so i dont
 come off so gruff.
the web is not TV. that's the mantra.
I believe that the BLOG aspect of a videoblog is very important.
pulling videos out of the blog and showing on a big screen does start
losing some of what I love about what we do.

So dont think of local vlog screenings as needing to be traditional
 sit/watch/leave.
Ryanne suggested things like have people stand up and talk between videos.
play videos from the actual blog (on the big screen)...so people see
 it in context.
 Mix it with performance.
 Have some bands play.

in the end, i think we're just talking about focusing on content
versus the tech...since we know there's so much good stuff now that
 could bring more people in.

The thing that I really loved about this was it was all about the

have seen all the programs but the ones I did catch were really fun.
And nothing beats the experience of seeing this stuff in a real
cinema environment with a bunch of people at the same time--just
 watching--with no interuptions.

And thanks to everyone who came to my mashup screening. I was happy

you too can host a screening where ever you live.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Threats and female vloggers

i occasionally get some rude ones and by occasionally i mean once in a blue

but never anything that i feel threatened by.

i'm just glad i don't post on youtube
there are some women on there who get trashed, for just talking about life
to the camera
and from what i can tell, you can't moderate your own comments on youtube.
which for me as a woman is a big no no.

this is why i love my blog
i can control things more.

and i rarely reject a comment, no matter if they agree with me or not
if they are spam or are being unconstructive to the conversation
you're ugly! then they get deleted.

As a man, I've never had threatening comments on my blog. I did
however get a few gross/nasty comments on the video where I got naked
and in the comments on digg where one video made it to the front page.

So in my little experience it seems to be somewhat a function of
popularity. Also it seems much worse for women rather than men.

Re: [videoblogging] pyro.tv transcoding and rehosting your stuff

2007-04-14 Thread ryanne hodson
i also got a response from them saying what sull had said
that they transcode so it's a more reliable playback experience...

Ryanne - I'll have your channel removed as soon as possible. Just an FYI,
I
understand that transcoding and hosting is an issue, but we decided to go
ahead with it because it significantly improves the viewing experience in a
web environment. We track all viewing data (not just downloads) and will be
making it available to all publishers in the next week.

 Update from Pyro.tv via Roxanne:

I understand the importance of tracking views and data. We will be
soon releasing a tool for publishers like yourself to get direct
visibility to your feed and titles performance through our service. I
will let you know when it is available. In the meantime, I'd be happy
to pass along any data we had already gathered (granted we have only
been public for a few days).

I have passed your feedback to our product group and will be
implementing changes as soon as we can. If you visit the site you
should see that the pyro.tv watermark in the player has already been
 removed.

I am also recommending a clear link in the player area titled Visit
this publisher's website or something similar, among other changes
to provide clear information about the content owner and rights.

Any additional feedback you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

[videoblogging] Re: pyro.tv transcoding and rehosting your stuff

2007-04-13 Thread ryanne hodson
i'm referring them to the vertigo aggregator best practices

http://videovertigo.org/information/aggregation/

though i'm not seeing on there
a specific clause about transcoding and re-hosting
other than this phrase:

Aggregators should always conduct video playback in the video's original
player, rather than the aggregator's player.

i don't think that's specific enough..
that says original player, not original format.
technically would that be considered the same thing?

because quicktime just has one player
flash could possibly have different players
so i'm a little confused on that wording.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Let's Help The Others, As We Used To, To Vlog

2007-03-25 Thread ryanne hodson
i think the elitist label is bullshit.

i think this list is great
people are welcome to rant and rave
and get to the nitty gritty of online video
hell meiser and watkins post novels every day...

and it's insane how much people help each other tirelessly on this list
to figure out tech stuff.

i've been on other lists of videomakers
and people aren't nearly as helpful as on this list.
usually the answers/attitudes are just google it
or go find it on a message board

so i'd like to sing the praises of this group.

after visiting the cold harsh lists of other video groups
i gladly return to the videoblogging list for a passionate rant
and friendly fisticuffs daily. (ok it's more than that)

as for helping people
watkins are you holding any events?
are you getting people to videoblog?

i think the list you stated
is a good example of what people in this community are capable and willing
to create
and i think that's pretty fucking amazing.
and if you don't think that's enough
it's up to you (and anyone really)
to do something about it.

i love the videoblogging list
no matter how crazy it can get.

Cheers, although I dont actually think that stuff was a problem or
really a reflection of any problems the group may have. I spend so
much time here stating my opinions, that I cant really complain if
anybody else ever states an opinion about me.

I think its quite normal that people would maybe treat my opinions on
vlogging differently if I actually vlogged a lot and they could 'see
me' more. If I had ever had a sucessful web business then my opinions
on other businesses might be taken differently by some, etc etc. And I
can see why it might seem weird to spend so much time on a blogging
group and reading and whining my opinions, when Im not blogging,
vlogging or doing a business or even having all that much time to
 watch video.

Anyways, I have been someone who moaned here and there about elitism
or some other aspects of this group, but Ive also been fairly negative
about possible alternatives. For me the group is healthy if opinions
are diverse, so I wouldnt mind a few elitist comments here and there
as it would reflect the fact there must be someone somewher who holds
such views. Just so long as the whole group doesnt suffer from such
things. Same with clique stuff, I think there may have been some
tendencies towards this but it was never the whole group, it was
clumps of people or even just one person using wording that might have
sounded elitist, and maybe was or wasnt, it never usually got explored
in depth, possibly because the label 'elitist' sounds negative so not
many people think they are guilty of that.

Some of the things that might put newcomers off this group are
accidental or systemic, or chance. For example there are still threads
people post that never get responded to. If its someone like me
posting then it doesnt really matter because I post a lot, but a
lurker or newbie who posts and is then largely or completely
unresponded to, may suffer more as a consquence. Generally this isnt a
huge problem and someoneusually steps up to the plate, or if there is
silence then it may be for a good reason, or there is jsut too much
email, but thats the sort of thing I think could be improved on by
improving systems rather than it being a case of the wrong people
 being here.

So I wouldnt suggest stating another group unless it had some things
at its core that would make it pretty fundamentally different to this
group. I dont know quite what this means in practice, but for example
if the conversations were mostly video then it would feel different.

I mean I wouldnt know if its possible to make the group either more or
less like it was in the past. Time has moved on, various people have
various reasons for not posting much to this group, their own personal
vlog voyage may have moved on. Also not everyone is as willing to
endlessly repeat themselves as I am, so once they've said everything
they could think to say here, and the honeymoon burst of initial
energy has worn off, things change.

Also I suspect that over time various events, arguments, watershed
moments in this group, make some people wary of bringing up certain
subjects. The virtual presence of certain strong characters or
opinions can leave its mark. Over the years of being online, Ive
occasionally got paranoid in various communities (usually forums) ive
been in, that my words may be doing more harm than good, which leads
to me shutting up for months to see if its a better place without me.
And over the years in this group I have sometimes questioned m worth
which usually elicits enough replies to make me stick around, but then
I feel guilty about email traffic being generated arounf the topic of
me, when I dont really think theres anything very interesting to talk
about me, which is one of the many reasons

i'll check a wordpress feed

this RSS feed from wordpress only shows 10!

   Hey, everyone.

Amy and I have been rubbing our heads together over the last month or so,
and we've launched a second video blog. This one is going to be much
closer to a true blog than Freetime because it's going to be mostly
about us and our lives. The premise of the new video blog, called
Greentime (http://www.weatherlight.com/greentime), is that it is going to
record and share a slice of our lives as we work, week by week, to make
our lives more green. We're planning on doing episodes on going vegan,
growing your own food, how to reduce consumption or better recycle, carbon
offsets, etc, etc. It's quite literally what we were thinking about and
trying out (and often committing to) that previous week.

This show is more than just a little bit of fun for us. We're actually
very serious about sustainability, fair trade, globabl warming, and
whatnot, and we're putting out this show because, like a lot of people, we
want to be part of the solution but can't just abandon our careers and
live on our own self-sustainable farm. We want to use the vlog to help
others like us who live urban lifestyles understand there are things they,
too, can be doing, and that environmentalism is for all of us and starts
 at home.

I'm trying to get the site out to the general community, and if anyone out
there would like to join in on the process, I'd really appreciate it.
I've posted releases on both Digg and Hugg (Digg for green topics). You
 can find the articles here:

 http://digg.com/videos/educational/Greentime_New_Green_Video_Blog_Launched
 http://www.hugg.com/story/Greentime-New-Green-Video-Blog-Launched-1/

And if you could Digg and Hugg them it would mean a lot to me. Also, if
you would like to blogroll us, link to us, blog about us, or whatnot, the
site's main URL is http://www.weatherlight.com/greentime and we're also on
 Blip.tv at http://greentime.blip.tv.

Thanks a lot, to everyone in this community, for your continued support.

Re: [videoblogging] Tracking videobloggingweek2007 videos

2007-03-08 Thread ryanne hodson
what if we have a group blogger blog
and all upload to our blip accounts (or if you don't have onewe make a
group one)
and we crosspost to the blog.

make a feedburner feed for the blog
and people can subscribe to that.

only that breaks permalinks to your personal blog
which is kinda blah

Although, I think technorati tagging has improved since last year. At

I know it was used successfully at a conference last fall (Internet

that the tag made the top of technorati and flickr's most popular lists.

So just the normal tagging might work fine.

produced for videoblogging week 2007.

Last year the problem with technorati was that it took forever for
 the
posts
to actually go through their system and be collected.

adding tags is the logical idea but we need the tagging system to
 grab
the
media, repackage it into a feed and make sure that it is up to date
 at
least
to the hour.

any other ideas?
any services/sites already do this?

we could have a wiki and have people add their posts there, but i
  doubt
everyone would do it and it would be nice to get an RSS feed out of
 it
all.

any developers wanna new project?

Hmm proably needs a snappier title if Im going to sell that as a
possible theme for the week ;)

Selling out is a persona thing, as you are only selling yourself short
of previously held ideals. I havent vlogged properly so I cant look
back and judge myself of 2.5 years ago to see how much Ive
compromised, my vlog is pure by not existing lol.

So anyway Im in no position to get up on some moral mountain and start
preeching but what the heck, the terrible shame is that potentially
those most passiante about vlogging could 'sell out' the most, because
they are more likely to want to do it fulltime and thats where money
becomes a real pressing issue, inviting compromise into your heart and
seeing if you can live with the self-imposed restraints on freedom
that almost all financial relationships bring in one way or another.

Meanwhile I sell out in a different way, by keeping the day job which
feeds me but robs me of the time necessary to do what I actually want
to do with video, ie something, anything. Obvously I could save hours
a day b not talking here, and use that to vlog, but as I havent
managed to do that in 2.5 years its more likely to happen if my dayjob
comes to a crashing end. So you never know I could participate in vlog
week this year if I go insane (or get sane) and resign, but my credit
card balance tells me Ive imprisoned myself for years to come.

   Cheers

I'm looking for the best bargain camera featuring a port for an

Canon Elura 100 MiniDV Camcorder is my best bet.

Can anyone help steer me in the right direction?
