  It should be fixed now. It was so long that nginx proxy in toolforge refused 
to issue the redirect, I did in HTML instead.

  @Nikki - your comment is a valid concern which IMHO could be easily solvable 
by selecting the URL handling. Obviously the discussion is about more choices 
and avoiding the "URL shortening failed" which is just not acceptable as a 
message/result in my opinon. There should be a least a link to explaining the 
choices and solutions available or better make these solutions/choices directly 
available.

  A lot of people seem to be assuming that everyone who wants a short URL wants 
to provide a public example query for everyone else to look at.
  
  I often attempt to use short URLs to copy queries between computers, they're 
not intended for anyone else to look at, let alone use or understand, and if 
you force me to provide a name, I will just press random keys. I'm also 
//really// not interested in saving queries on-wiki just so that I can get a 
URL that's safe to copy and paste. It's bad enough that anyone can get a full 
list of everything I've ever edited and when without trying to publish all the 
things I'm querying for too.

  Why not go with "named queries" while at it? The examples Button at 
https://query.wikidata.org/ currently has 363 such "named queries". If the 
names would have a namespace structure it would be an ideal way of having two 
ways to reference a query
  
  1. by name e.g. wdqs.example.cats
  2. by short url https://w.wiki/5aSt
  
  So for too long queries asking for a name should IMHO be mandatory and for 
short queries optional. This way a structured list of "well known queries" 
could be started. If we add a bit of infrastructure we'd essential get close to 
a query-repository/query shop.

  For the specific case of wdqs/wcqs, I think it'd be quite easy to set up a 
toolforge service to become de-facto key-value store for queries would that 
suffice?

  We are using this great feature in 
https://cr.bitplan.com/index.php/List_of_Queries but run into length limits for 
some of our queries e.g. try it ! 

  
  QLever will e.g. happily create short urls such as 
https://qlever.cs.uni-freiburg.de/wikidata/6Xzhxj
  
  **What needs to be done to increase the lenght limit?** was my first 
question. Now it would be more: What alternatives could we offer when the 
lenght limit for the standard way of shortening is exceeded? E.g. having a 
separate wiki just for such examples would be a way to in which creating a page 
with a "try it" button is offered as was mentioned as a workaround above. This 
would actually makes sens in a lot of other cases and extra information could 
be asked for.

  Thank you, @WolfgangFahl, this is a great point! I did an 
[investigation](T295560 ), but, 
unfortunately, solving this is not as straight forward as I originally hoped. 
So while, at least for now, we cannot invest many development resources on 
this, changing the error message is definitely something that we could do.
  
  What should the message be? I guess, ideally, there would be some information 
on wiki that we could point to?

  The worst part is IMHO the message URL-shortening failed / URL-Kürzung 
fehlgeschlagen - instead it should offer workarounds and alternatives. It's 
quite strange that his is being discussed for many years given that there is 
such a big need.

  long-sparql looks neat. Do you think you could make it support {{query page}} 
 as well? It has the same 
`query` parameter as {{SPARQL}}; you could also ask the API to parse 
`{{query_page_name|style=url}}` to get the URL out of it, but it looks like you 
already have a wikitext parser, so I guess you don’t need that.

  The straightforward way to do this would require enabling CORS access from 
query.wikidata.org to www.wikidata.org. I requested this a while ago in T218568 
, but it was declined, and having 
since found several XSS vulnerabilities in the query service UI, I’m now very 
glad about that, and fairly reluctant to consider it again.
  
  Using OAuth would be an alternative, I guess (with a server backend that only 
allows very specific actions: creating user subpages with SPARQL content), but 
building and deploying that backend would be more work.

  That's fair. I made a new tool today called "long-sparql". Given a page like 
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/User:Legoktm/test, where there's a query on the 
page with `{{SPARQL|query=...}}` looking at ?action=info, the page id is 
19420423. You can now link directly to that query with 
https://ls.toolforge.org/p/19420423. The tool looks up the query on the page 
and then redirects you to it, which I believe should be identical to w.wiki. 
It's rather rough, but if people find it useful, it would be straightforward to 
add support to linking to queries on specific revisions of wiki pages, and 
provide a form for people to input a page's title and get the shorter link from 
it. It's mostly in proof-of-concept status currently, so let me know (source 
code: https://gitlab.com/legoktm/long-sparql/).
  
  Ideally, the Wikidata query service interface would give you the option to 
save too-long queries onto a wiki page (some OAuth login), and then provide a 
different link based on that.
  
  As a side note, when trying to deploy that tool to Toolforge, I ran into 
limits on how long of a URL could be redirected via `Location: ...` headers, 
because nginx has some default limits that the example query on my test page 
exceeded. w.wiki does not go through nginx but rather some other proxies 
(Apache, Varnish, ATS, envoy), so very long URLs might get caught in one of 
those too. Probably fixable or avoidable, but just another thing to keep in 
mind.
