Subject: [Wikimania-l] little tips

Some general conference-going tips, borrowed from other conferences:

* Label your laptop charger just as you would your luggage -- use a
luggage tag, or stick some adhesive tape on and write your name on that.

* 5-2-1 rule: each day of the event, get at least 5 hours of sleep, 2
real meals, and 1 shower.

* Each day, spend 30 minutes outside the venue, doing something that has
nothing to do with the conference.

* If you are overwhelmed or tired, it is OKAY to go back to your room
and nap.  You can't catch everything.  Don't wear yourself out.

* Searching for recent tweets about Wikimania:
https://twitter.com/search?q=wikimaniamode=realtime

* Thank the volunteers when you have a chance.  They make this work.

There is now a big banner with the VisualEditor logo showing the way

Dear speakers!

Please, please, PLEASE put your slides up on the conference pages! (If
possible, with comments.)

Not everyone has the chance to see every presentation they're interested
about. This way, you might get useful feedback and possibly
cooperation even after you've closed your computer and left the stage.
We're not a military company, we don't need a who's not in, is out

[Wikimania-l] Meetup MediaWiki release management

2013-08-09 Thread Markus Glaser
Hello all,

I just proposed a meetup on MediaWiki Release Management:

http://wikimania2013.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meetups#MediaWiki_Release_Management

Time: Saturday, 1430-1530 in room N114 (next to Logo Square).

Description: MediaWiki is mainly developed for the Wikimedia sites. So,
naturally, there is some room for improvement when it comes to the tarball
releases. Besides automating the release process, we care a lot about third
party users and extension developers. So in this meetup, we'd like to listen to
you. What are your needs? Where do you feel the current release (process) is
not good enough? What are the biggest issues? And: do you want to help?

In case you are interested, please sign up or just show up J

Best,

Markus (mglaser) and Mark (hexmode)

Re: [Wikimania-l] Accomodation recommendation

2013-08-09 Thread Benny
http://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Hong_Kong/Kowloon#Sleep

Budget
A large number of guesthouses are located in Tsim Sha Tsui,
Mong Kok and Jordan offering cheap, small but generally comfortable and
safe accommodation licensed by the Hong Kong government. These are
barebone places to stay so there will be no restaurants, souvenir shops
or newspaper delivery. Most owners will only speak basic English. Chung
King Mansions and Mirador Mansions, both on Nathan Road in Tsim Sha
Tsui, are famously home to a number of budget hotels and hostels. Having
attracted western backpackers for decades, these guesthouses have
become increasingly popular with budget travellers from mainland China.
Staying at budget hotels is entirely at your own risk and you are
advised to seek recommendations from other travellers. Please remember
to post your own recommendations here.

Expect budget hotel rooms to be undecorated and small with only a bed (or
beds), night stand, telephone and television. Noise from fellow
travellers may be a problem, so invest in good earplugs. Most will have
in-suite bathrooms while others have communal bathrooms. Upon
check-in, you should ask the owner how to turn on the water boiler
unless you want to shower with cold water. Some guesthouses will include free
wireless Internet. Virtually all rooms will come with
air-conditioning.
Bookings are not needed and some Wikivoyagers have reported that
bookings have not always been honoured. The best way to secure a room is simply
by arriving at around 1:00pm, when many of last night's guests
have just checked out. Ask to see the room before paying, and you should pay
for only one night. If you're happy with the first night, the owner will almost
always happily extend your stay. You should also ask if
there's 24 hour unassisted entrance (which is recommended) or if you
have to ring a bell at night. Credit cards aren't accepted, it's cash
only. Remember to ask for a receipt with check-in and check-out dates
clearly printed.

Prices generally range from $150-$250 per night for a single room
with en-suite bathrooms. If you are comfortable with a community
bathroom, expect to pay about $120. If you know how long you are
staying, negotiate in advance to get a lower rate: they want your
business over several days, so they will be willing to drop their prices to
even $90 a night for a four or five night stay. However some less
honest managers tend to increase their prices dramatically around public
holidays, in which case it will take either a reservation or a very
hard bargaining to get back to the prices mentioned above (or you can
simply try and pick a good one, but it can take several hours).

There are more accommodation options on the Chung King Mansion,
including dormitory rooms. The building which was once an office
building is over populated by the countless cheap hostels within it and
is now home for lots of foreigners from poor countries all around the
world. The massive amount of people creates a queue of up to 15 min to
the elevators at rush hours.
Among those that have a long history are the Travellers Hostel, Block A, 16 Fl
in Chungking and the Garden Hostel, 2Fl, Mirador Mansions[1]. There are places
in the Mansions however that travellers seeking fair lodging should definitely
avoid. Among them are the Fortunate Guest House and Peninsula Guest House, both
owned by the same shady individual who will not hesitate to put
you in another, cheaper guesthouse while making you pay disproportionate fees
and keeping the difference. The said individual has apparently
earned himself quite a reputation among the Chinese guesthouse owners,
and is usually seen on the ground floor trying to attract customers.
* Cosmic Guest House, 12/F, Block A1, Mirador Mansion, ☎ (852) 2369

There isn't any information about recordings on the wiki, apart from a

Does somebody know if any recording is taking place and, if yes, in what

[Wikimania-l] Etherpads

Hi, folks.

Many of you are still using etherpad.wikimedia.org -- which is old and
terribly buggy. Some of you have switched to etherpad.wmflabs.org -- which
is new and works well, but which had repeatedly choked in the past couple
of days under the stress from dozens of Wikipedians taking notes
simultaneously on several sheets.

*The best server to use is http://epl.wikimedia.org* -- also running the
new version, but deployed on a production-grade server that shouldn't have
those frequent disconnections and load problems.

Agreed but I think it's not so bad if you know the backstory. (and
maybe I got some of this wrong, ops pls correct me if I did!)

Short version: all new pads should be made on https://epl.wikimedia.org for now.
(maybe epl.wm.o will eventually redirect to etherpad.wm.o ? anyway,
using the epl.wm.o domain should work always even if it redirects you
to etherpad.wm.o )

backstory:

(we could have maybe already switched etherpad.wm.o to be epl and made
old pads available at e.g. etherpad-old.wm.o in the interim but I
don't think that's worth it at this stage of the migration.)

the labs version just exists because the prod version at the time was
(sometimes) unreliable and there was no point in sight when that would
be fixed. I guess an end of life for the labs version could be
announced very soon. (or at least end of support)

the legacy (java/openoffice.org) version still exists because there
was until recently still a lot of work to do to finish the migration
to the epl version. (there has been a lot of recent migration
work/progress)

Re: [Wikimania-l] WMEU

2013-08-09 Thread Raul Veede
A short clarification:

I did NOT mean to set up an organization of European chapters.

It's just that on a recent trip to European Commission I noticed that the
coverage of EU on wikiprojects is surprisingly lousy, yet it influences
millions of people and could be really important. A usual article on a
multimillion dollar program of EU is only present on English and French
Wikipedias, has no sources, doesn't mention implementation, media coverage
or influence, and dates from 2007 or 2009. Fairly, it sucks. But it doesn't
have to be like that.

EU institutions aren't any good in spreading neutral and objective
information directly to the people whose lives they influence, so
everything goes through the filters of local politicians and media which
all too often have their own agenda. (That's why there's a monthly panic
about EU forbidding this or that.) To be honest, we're much better at
communication than the EU professionals are. So, maybe we could cooperate.

I'm not a missionary for this, I won't try to convince anyone. I'm already
exhausted by my current work. But I'd like to hear if anyone else thinks we
could (or should) do something about it.

Raul

 Hi Barbara,

The link doesn't seem to be working - the HTTPS link times out, and the
HTTP version leads to a protected google doc that people need permission to
 access…

 Thanks,
 Mike

Hi Raul,

I'm interested in talking about this topic. Do you know about the EU policy
project?

I think Dimi is in Wikimania, but unfortunately I haven't meet him yet.

I've already talked to some of us, so I hope they chime in and help us
find a time slot - maybe sometime tonight, before people start to leave.
