Thanks for the testing guys. Looks like this one is squashed.
For the record, the problem was caused by code I added to reduce the
memory usage of the backend.
Sane backends 1.0.20 and before used a full-size buffer for both front
and backside data. Total of 200Mb for 600dpi color duplex A4.

Sane-backends is now in code freeze in preparation for release of
1.0.22. Please only commit fixes for bugs which would break
compilation or hardware. Documentation and translation updates are ok
(I've still got a couple of the latter to do).
Release is still scheduled for Feb 13, 2011.
Thanks
Wow- you are the 4th person in two business days to report this bug,
which has been around for nearly a year :) My karma perhaps?
Anyway- I think this is fixed in a current sane-backends development
version, but I've had no confirmation yet.
Any chance you could build from source? I can give

so I would still advise an upgrade.

You need to install saned and the hpaio driver on the router. Then
configure the net backend on your desktop to talk to it.

then send me S1500.log directly.

Hi I try to scan a document using my new scansnap S1500.
No, Markus has uncovered a real bug. The S1500 chokes when doing high
resolution duplex scans. The backend reads data from both sides of the
paper, and buffers the back side. Unfortunately, we read too far ahead
on the backside, and the scanner has problems.
Do you have the S1500 too? perhaps you

This only works if the system knows that the device is a scanner. If
your device is newer than the udev rules or hal fdi files your system
uses, then it cannot manage the permissions.

There is some code in sane to expose additional image types like jpeg

So, you would need to get usb logs of either the windows driver or
