Early this morning, while awake and listening to the sounds of the occasional
but regular waves of migrants passing overhead (through the audio feed coming
in through my Bill Evans-style rooftop-mounted microphone) I bolted alert after
hearing this much higher frequency and longer in duration
It appears we are in the early days of a huge Northern Saw-whet owl movement.
Banders in Ontario and other more northerly sites in Canada and the US are
reporting
huge catches. PA stations are already reporting owls.
Here last night we had a terrific night with 12 young saw-whets banded! That's
Joseph Brin and I just had great looks at two Nelson's Sparrows at the
Marten's Tract of Montezuma.

I, too, saw a Nelson's Sparrow this morning at Marten's Tract. The bird I saw
was on the dike about 150 yards North of the Southeast corner of the main
impoundment. Excellent extended views right around 9:00am.
Drew and Joe, where were your birds located?
Thanks and good birding!!
Sincerely,
The sparrows were on the south side of the road. About 200 yards out
the road to the tree and between the two ditches.
I can send out precise coordinates when I get home. The best I can do
on my phone is 43.08311, -76.70699

I set a record for this time of year with 24 species. It seems that

There must be a lot of NELSON'S SPARROWs around, because this morning I has
one pop up in the wetland to the north of the Lab of Ornithology this morning.
It's a new Sapsucker Woods bird for me and in eBird. I saw the bird for about
30 seconds while I was standing on the short boardwalk
No luck with Wes's Nelson's Sparrow this afternoon, but I just had a
ticking MARSH WREN in the cattail patch just northeast of the loading dock
by the building (west of north end of closest staff parking lot), 5 LESSER
YELLOWLEGS are feeding in the shallow water off the Sherwood Platform, and
