On my 34 while the mast was out I drilled 2 small holes in the aft “wall” and
forced in 2 small plastic tubes so the water dripped into the bilge. Also
drilled a small hole in the bottom aft of the mast so the water could easily
get into the box. I clean each tube with grass trimmer line as
On the 1989 34R, the maststep is a deep welded aluminum box with wooden spacer
blocks in front and behind. The box originally had one 1/2" drain hole but the
wooden blocks always looked wet. I added two 3/8" drain holes and also
scallopped the bottoms of the wooden blocks so they left a path
I haven’t heard of that, but a friend of mine who bought a slightly used Sabre
48 powerboat could not get insurance unless he has a licensed captain on board
every time he goes out for three years. After three years (even if the boat
sits at the dock the entire time), he will be deemed worthy
This is strange. I was chatting with a friend who is looking for a larger
boat (power). He said a couple of insurance representatives and a
knowledgeable broker told him he could not get insurance for a boat more
than 15 feet longer than his existing boat unless he has a master's
license.
My 1995 C 36 XL/kcb had a hole as well--I found it as I was cleaning out the
mast step to drill a hole!

I have a 1980 C 34. Keel stepped mast step gets water
My mast step had a drain hole which got plugged with debris. You might have
one as well. Drilling a small hole won't cause a problem.

I have a 1980 C 34. Keel stepped mast step gets water (from mast) and I’m
wondering if it’s okay / advisable to drill a small hole in the metal step so
the the water will drain into the bilge?
