This is a side effect of word wrapping setting when running irssi in
screen. Pressing C-a r turns of that screen behaviour and it fixes the
problem.

When a long link is posted into an IRC channel, a hole appears. This
initially appears as an empty line, but on changing to another window
and back, it is filled by whatever line was in the window just switched
to. I have found no way of closing
