Hi!
After being bitten by this bug I have now found the exact way to
reproduce it (for me). If the cursor is located on the tab-bar (which
is quite normal if you just switched the urxvt tab) you can't produce
some characters like ~ and `. If you move the cursor down into the
«normal» area
I couldn't manage to reproduce this bug anymore. Feel free to invalidate it.
Should it happen again in the future I'll ask to reopen this bug report.

I'm not completely sure, but I think the package is missing
Conflicts and Replaces for older libmtp* packages?
Something like:
Conflicts: libmtp7, libmtp6, libmtp5
Replaces: libmtp7, libmtp6, libmtp5
..in debian/control.in and debian/control files.

line? Does it solve the performance issue for you?
