This bug should be somewhat related to locale settings. I confirm the bug. I'm running sid with italian locale (LANG=it_IT.UTF-8) and see the same error. If I type: LANG=C xchat-gnome xchat-gnome starts in english with no errors. this happened before with previous versions and has been fixed.
