As far as I know, there were some issues regarding this in Natty from
the Empathy side itself. Are you running Natty?
Empathy 3 fixed most of them I believe.

I had the issue once today. It happens randomly, not always when an app
is maximized. Difficult to reproduce (happens like one time in a
hundred). I'll mark this confirmed, seems more like a gnome-screensaver
issue than Unity.
