[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2058881] Re: [snap] Allow chromium snap to access Pressure Stall Information (PSI)

2024-03-30 Thread Kamal Mostafa
Spamming three lines to dmesg every 10 minutes forever is pretty
intolerable. Please fix this regression.

It seems the AppAmor profile should be updated to allow Chromium

  it's processes?

I have narrowed the issue down to a patch in the changelog on the 15th
Mar which states "Import plugins from -bad that are needed for main
applications". This patch imports some "bad" plugins into the source

removing the patches related to the bad plugins fixed the issue.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2054510] Re: Incomplete screen redraws in virtual machines running Xorg

2024-03-30 Thread Egmont Koblinger
Another most likely duplicate: https://github.com/gnome-
terminator/terminator/issues/899

And yet another most likely duplicate:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=294164. Here a user claims
that downgrading gnome-shell and mutter fixes the issue, and points to
upstream issue https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/issues/3384.

Based on that report, some non-VTE-based apps are also affected.

It really looks like the bug is in upstream Mutter, and made it into
downstream updates as well.

Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

When using software rendering on Xorg (so usually just in VMs), some
parts of app windows may fail to redraw.

  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/issues/2880

  [ Test Plan ]

  1. Set up a virtual machine without graphics acceleration.
  2. Log into 'Ubuntu on Xorg'.
  3. Open Settings > About and verify Graphics = llvmpipe (or "Software
Rendering"), and Windowing System = X11.
  4. sudo snap install chromium
  5. Open Chromium and find a web page with lots of text. Plain text without
any links and staying at the top of the page will work best because you don't
want to trigger any scrolling.
  6. Start selecting text with the mouse and while holding the button move the
mouse up and down rapidly. Avoid triggering any page scrolling.
  7. Release the mouse button in roughly the middle of the area of text that
was selected.
  8. Verify the remaining text selection is contiguous and not broken into
multiple disconnected text selections (the bug).
  9. Repeat steps 7 and 8 several times to be sure.

[ Where problems could occur ]

The fix adds a new synchronization point between the compositor and X
server. This should be inconsequential, although there is a "sync
ring" in mutter used for this, and if a mistake occurs there then
other parts of the desktop could appear to stop responding in Xorg
  sessions.

  [ Other Info ]

This is a regression that started in 3.37.3 due to
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/commit/551101c65cda.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2054510] Re: Incomplete screen redraws in virtual machines running Xorg

2024-03-30 Thread Egmont Koblinger
During the last barely more than 24 hours, at least 4 people have
reported/confirmed heavy latencies newly appearing in their GNOME
Terminal. One person with Ubuntu 23.10 and two people with Ubuntu 22.04
(one of which comments has just been removed).

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-terminal/-/issues/8070

https://askubuntu.com/questions/1509058/input-delay-on-terminal-
ubuntu-22-04-4

GNOME Terminal, and its underlying VTE terminal emulator widget, did not
receive any updates recently in Ubuntu, so it's highly suspected that
the bug sneaked in into some other component (or maybe a valid change in
some other component triggered a yet undiscovered bug in VTE / GNOME
Terminal).

Even though I cannot reproduce the issue myself, I went through the log
of my recent apt updates, and this mutter change is the only one
seemingly relevant (see https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-
terminal/-/issues/8070#note_2067801 onwards); in fact, the summary
showing a suspiciously high correlation with the new problem.

At this point I don't have anything concrete, and it might just be a
random coincidence, but I highly suspect that this recent mutter update
introduces severe lagging in GNOME Terminal (and other terminal
emulators using VTE's GTK3 version).

connected it to an external Dell Dell P2720D monitor via HDMI.

The UI under Settings > Displays then "Mirror", the default setting
works, and I see the display duplicated as expected, with the large
external monitor having a low resolution limited to that of the
  laptop.

But if I switch to "Join" does not allow to Apply with message:

  > Changes Cannot be Applied. This could be due to hardware
  limitations.

Logging off and changing to X allows "Join" to work, so it is a
  Wayland issue.

Is there a way to make it work on Wayland? Mostly out of morbid curiosity.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2044718] Re: mantic on raspberry5: x and/or lightdm problems

2024-03-30 Thread Dennis Golden
I agree; however, I don't know exactly how to proceed/who to report it
to. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The current work around
works great, but it's still a manual work around with everyone having to
search for an answer.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2012556] Re: GNOME Magnifier: Performance issues with Pipewire and OBS

Are you using GNOME Magnifier for screen sharing? Because I do not see a
mention of desktop magnification in your bug report.

Status in pipewire package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Timeline:

  1. (March 11, 2023) I have uploaded a video regarding the problems with GNOME
Magnifier.
  https://odysee.com/@GraysonPeddie:6/gnome-mag-obs:5

  2. (March 11, 2023) I filed a bug report on Pipewire.
  https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pipewire/pipewire/-/issues/3087

  3. (March 14, 2023) I uploaded another short video with pw-top (Pipewire)
running on the terminal.
  https://odysee.com/@GraysonPeddie:6/gnomemag-pwtop-obs-pipewire:d

  4. (March 14, 2023) I filed a bug report on GNOME Mutter's issue tracker and
referenced the two videos and a bug report from Pipewire, but I get no response
from the Mutter team.
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/issues/2698

Affected GNOME versions and why I am filing the bug here:

This affects GNOME 42, GNOME 43, and GNOME 44. For GNOME 42 and 43, I
used Nobara 36 and 37. Nobara is based on Fedora but includes patches
  for gaming and content creation.

I wanted to try out GNOME 44 in Ubuntu 23.04 and I managed to run OBS
with Pipewire Screen Sharing, but then the performance with GNOME
Magnifier is very sluggish and it froze my entire computer. I've had
to restart my computer, but for some reason, GNOME 44 won't load and
I've had to go back to Nobara as that is my distro of choice for
gaming. This issue with GNOME not loading is beyond the scope of the
  bug report.

So in short, all the recent versions of GNOME (up to 44) are affected
regardless of which Linux distribution I use.

The reason why I need to file a bug here is because I do not get a
response from the Mutter team and I'm at a standstill with Pipewire as
they cannot diagnose the problem that I am having.

I could test the issue in Ubuntu 22.04 and 22.10, but unfortunately, I
do not have another computer to test. On top of that, even if I could
install OBS in a live USB image of Ubuntu 22.04 and 22.10, I have an
NVIDIA GPU and the GNOME Magnifier is sluggish with Nouveau driver,
but again, that is beyond the scope of this issue that I am having.

  Specs:
  AMD Ryzen 9 5900X CPU
  32GB of RAM
  NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti
  Resolution: 3840x2160 at 60Hz

  What I'm Expecting to Happen:

The performance with GNOME Magnifier and Pipewire screen capturing
  with OBS should be smooth.

  Actual Behavior:

Please refer to the two videos in the Timeline section.

  Steps to Reproduce:

In order to reproduce an issue, OBS needs to be installed. However, I
am not sure if this is only related to OBS, but that is the only
software I use for screen capturing and with support for JACK.

  1. Open OBS.
  2. Under Sources, press the Add (+) button.
  3. Select "Screen Capture (Pipewire)."
  4. Select the monitor and press "Share." The screen capture should show up on
the preview area of OBS.
  5. Open the Settings from either the Overview or the Quick Settings Menu.
  6. Scroll down to Accessibility and turn on Zoom.

Move your mouse around and you should see performance issues with
GNOME Magnifier when doing screen capturing using Pipewire. This
  affects both Xorg and Wayland.

  Questions:

Is there anything else that I am missing? Should I only test this in
Ubuntu even though it's not Ubuntu-specific? Besides, the supported
Ubuntu versions should all be affected by this issue.

Press super key, and the workspace viewer does not show up.

I think this is a bug, because the super key should always work to

Same happens for alt-tab and super-tab.

Unfortunately I can't make an account on askubuntu to report this bug

  Hi,

  fresh lunar lobster installation here,

from legacy iso image ( ubiquity installer. )

As I usually do, I tried to change the font for interface, as I much
prefer « condensed » fonts rather than large, round, regular ones.

In 20.04 or 22.04 or 22.10 gnome-tweaks allowed to do that.

Today in 23.04, it only changes font in gnome-shell ( top panel,
activities and app's views ) but not in other app's, not in the whole
interface as it used to do.

In dconf-editor I did not find entries regarding « global » interface
  font.

  Is this intended behavior ?

Ability to change font type and size is also a matter of
  accessibility.

2024-03-30 Thread LinuxEnthusiast99
Public bug reported:

Install GNOME Calendar via the App Center
version is stable 44.1
Open button from within App Center is greyed out.
Opened via Show Apps
In the month view only scroll speed is way to sensitive, one notch is multiple
months. First day of the month is not the same as calendar in system panel.
Icon is not shown in open application bar. Name when hovered over is shown as
org.gnome.calendar or similar.
Uninstall.

sudo apt install gnome-calendar

All of these issues don't happen, icon is shown correctly, etc.
