Re: [GNC-dev] Cookbooks

2020-09-28 Thread David T. via gnucash-devel

Frank,

The entire Guide was originally written as a step-by-step "cookbook"
with sections in each chapter "putting it all together." Those sections
have slowly disappeared over time, in large part because they were
overly specific (an existing example is the section that uses a Degas
painting as an example of capital gains?!?), or used informal language
that obscured the underlying concepts they were trying to explain.
Putting case studies on the wiki is far and away a better solution than
re-cluttering the Guide with information that only a few will need.

David,

Adding to the Appendices is, I think, a serious mistake. The Appendices
are where good intentions go to be ignored and forever enshrined in
2006. Take a look at the history and content of, for example, Appendices
A and B for example.

Hi Chris,

in theory the Guide is the right place, but if you think it still
needs
improvement, you can put it in the wiki.

Note on your draft: Abbreviations should be defined on the first usage
or, if they are used in different places in the glossary and
linked from
the first occurrence in each page.

Sure. Wiki is fine.

I wasn't aware that it was country-specific, which certainly affects its
proper placement. Probably that detail would be useful--as in, "Here is
a quick how-to for managing GST in Genovia. It may also prove useful for
other jurisdictions, such as Latveria and Wakanda."

That's supposed to be an example of good organization? Good grief.

I agree with you and disagree with David and Frank about putting articles like
