Any luck debugging, John? Anything I can do to provide more useful info?

Hi,
I had the same problem and fund the solution for it.
1) go this website https://www.alphavantage.co
chose "Get your free API Key today"
register and get an Alpha Vantage API Key.
Copy the key and go to step no. 2
2) In Gnucash menu go to Preferences -> Online Quotes
paste the API key
I have too many VMs. It was a different VM that has Ubuntu 16.04 and
GnuCash release 2.6.12 with Finance::Quote 1.47 that is currently the only
instance here that can download security prices for US stocks through
AlpaVantage. That instance cannot retrieve any of the 5 currencies that I

Not sure what is happening at my house(wrt GnuCash). Release 2.6.19 with
finance-quote 1.47 in Windows was able to retrieve the US securities in my
portfolio via AlphaVantage earlier this year but now it cannot retrieve
anything. Release 2.6.17 (backport?) in Ubuntu 16.04 with finance::quote
Thanks - it's reassuring to know it's not just me...
all the best,

I've tried making a copy of the account and deleting hundreds (or

Hi,
I have GnuCash 2.6.21 for Mac (running 10.13.4). I have set up
Finance::Quote properly, with my alphavantage key. When I press "Get
quotes" in the Price Editor, I expect updates for CHF, EUR and several
stock quotes. The stock quotes come back fine each time, but the two
currency updates fail

Alphavantage is just not robust enough to support all the users of GC
plus what they were supporting before Yahoo went south last year.

But I wonder - does GNUCash use alphavantage for currencies?

Cunning stuff Adriano!
Here's someone else finding that implementing a delay doesn't seem to work:

I suspect it's throttled on the basis of 'x requests allowed
Hello Richard
You can't introduce a delay in Gnucash but you can modify the
Finance::Quote module that Gnucash use.
For the currency is Quote.pm (for me is in
/usr/local/share/perl/5.22.1/Finance/ ) and I try tho chance it :

Sorry I couldn't reply to this before Adriano - I've been finding using
this list a bit too difficult for me! (A confusion between my @gmail and

I think you are probably on to something in trying to throttle your

Hello Richard
After doing countless tests I think that the problem is related to the
management of the demands of Alphavantage.
But I can not figure out where we are wrong.
These are the declared performances:

I have this problem too (starting yesterday). I was going to do a post -
then, late in the day, the problem went away! But now it's back again.
I wonder if this is a connectivity issue with whatever GNUCash uses for
currency sources? (This is hard-wired I think, and I'm not sure what that
is).
Hello
I apologize for my poor English.
I use GnuCash since 2011 and usually I am able to solve this kind of
problem by myself if necessary modifing the perl files of Finance::Quote.
But now I'm going crazy with this problem.
I've got this error since february 14 on two different PC with Ubuntu
Yes, I was looking at the F::Q Currencies.pm, unfortunately I’m not
proficient enough in Perl to do that confidently.
Alphavantage also has a the separate API for currencies which will be more
efficient because it only returns the current exchange rate (vs this daily
history for stocks), e.g.:

Alphavantage supports currencies, e.g.:
$ export ALPHAVANTAGE_API_KEY=XXX
$ gnc-fq-dump alphavantage GBPUSD=X
Finance::Quote fields Gnucash uses:
symbol: GBPUSD=X <=== required
date: 11/09/2017 <=== recommended
currency: USD <=== required
