[IMail Forum] Shot in the dark, but you guys are the smartest bunch I know
This is not iMail related, but this is the smartest group of people I know so here goes: We have a user on our network who is using a Toshiba laptop running WinXP Pro and Outlook XP. The problem he is having is getting his POP email. He has Outlook set up to deliver email from both our Exchange server and his pop email server to the same inbox. He can send and receive just fine on the exchange account, he cannot on the pop. As a matter of fact, when you look at the account settings, and press the test settings button, Outlook fails on the establish network connectivity step. Keep in mind that the user is constantly connected to our school network and he can access the internet just fine. There are other users in his area with the same settings and they can send and receive email from both accounts just fine. The only thing I can figure that is different is that the laptop originally ran XP Home and was upgraded to XP Pro. Any ideas? __ Do you Yahoo!? New and Improved Yahoo! Re: [IMail Forum] Shot in the dark, but you guys are the smartest bunch I know
Can the user in question telnet to port 110? If not then it isn't an Outlook issue but rather a connectivity issue somewhere...Check his TCP settings to see if by some chance he setup something screwy in the TCP filtering..I had a customer once who was the personification of paranoia and mucked around in there and really messed things up... Is this person behind a proxy or firewall? I was thinking if it is proxy then maybe the others have firewall clients and permissions and he doesn't. That be the case here with us running ISA only the ones authorized to send and receive external pop are able to. [IMail Forum] Symantec or SOFTWIN BitDefender Virus shield for Imail?
Hello to All, I am with an Architect firm with 60 computer/email users. I have been using Imail v8.12 for SMB with McAfee Webshield 4.51 for a year now and it is time to renew our support contract. I am well aware of all shortcomings of using McAfee Webshield on the email server, for example several antispam features of Imail is useless (and disabled) because the Imail engine communicates to the McAfee engine on the same server (127.0.0.1), therefore can not use any lookup (black list, reverse, etc), that's DNS related. This is why I am considering purchasing a Virus shield package for Imail now. Back then when I discovered the sad truth about how McAfee Webshield has crippled half of the antispam features of Imail, I learned, that the ideal Virus engine for Imail will be embedded in the SMTP mail process so, that Imail in fact will communicate with the outside world in all aspects. Currently I have McAfee Webshield configured for checking for virus only in the incoming messages (incoming to our firm, sent by folks outside of our firm), because, back then a McAfee support tech told me, that McAfee Webshield is not a full blown SMTP server, at least, not an efficient one with enhanced pooling structure, so it should not be used as an SMTP server. So, now, that I gave you all a little background info about my current situation, these are my questions: If you already have used both Symantec and Bitdefender based virus scan solution for Imail server, how do the two compare? Which one do you use currently? Do you guys check for virus on both inbound and outbound mail on the Imail server, or you rely on the virus shield that has been installed on the individual workstations when it comes to the outbound mail? (We do use McAfee Enterprise 7.1 on all of our workstations and servers and I found quite interesting a recent message thread about using McAfee Enterprise for email server. Based, on what I read, that fellow excluded file extensions and folders similarly as I set up McAfee on the workstations to scan messages in Eudora Pro spool folder. Anyway, I don't intend to use this method on our Imail server, I just wanted to share my thoughts on this subject.) Geza, Boy I know this always causes a problem on this listBUT using DECLUDE anti-virus with F-protect had really saved my butt. It also lets you block certain (definable) file extensions and pass worded zip files which some virus scannerscan't get into. Italso checks inbound and outbound traffic. From the documentation that I have read for iMail, I will need to install the EZSignup.exe program to allow for the ability for the user to sign up automagically via ASP. However, I am unable to find any documentation where the user can also create their own List on the ListServer via ASP. Is this possible? If so, is there an sample Code/Apps that anyone may have that they would be willing to share? Also -- as noted above, we are using 2 web servers that are load balanced. Will I need to get a 3rd server specific to iMail or can I install iMail on one of the existing web servers? Thank you in advance for any assistance. Hopefully, a future IPSwitch customer. Re: [IMail Forum] SMTP Service Stops Processing
Jeff, We have experienced the same situation under 7.15. No errors at all to include nothing in the event viewer or Dr. Watson. We opened a support ticket with IPSwitch, but we never had anything to go on. They advised us to upgrade to 8.x and see if that helped. We did upgrade our backup server to 8.x which introduced a whole set of different problems so we kept the primary on 7.15 and wrote some monitoring code (windows service) to keep an eye on the queue for this issue. If your interested in our queue monitoring application (QueueMon) you can check it out at http://www.invariantsystems.com.
