Hmm. Make sure the mbstring and xml extensions are enabled in your php.ini
file?

After installing Debian 9 after a hard-drive died I'm now having
problems getting my local installation of mediawiki up and running. I'm
using this page as my guide [1] and copied and pasted the stanza "sudo
apt-get install apache2 mysql-server php php-mysql libapache2-mod-php
php-xml
Did they change your version of php?

Actually, I was the culprit. I changed from a Linux Mint LMDE version to
a server running Enterprise Ubuntu cloud. Also, yes php and Mysql all
changed. I actually own the hardware. Just made an error and had to
find my own solution. However I had that same problem with a server

* restart the web server to ensure PHP configuration has been reloaded

I'm not much into web developement, I don't really know if mediawiki
uses any of Zend functionnality, perhaps am I totally wrong ;)
If zend is installed, it will use it. Zend is only used to speed up php.
