In some apps I've worked on Rails 5.1 and prior, environment variables,
saved directly into the source code.
In rails 5.2 Custom credentials encourages us to check-in only the
encrypted version of our configuration, and keep our master.key keyfile
outside of our repository.
My question is
f so, this would be a compelling reason for us to upgrade to Rails 5, as we
think we are loosing a significant amount of traffic due to this bug.
If not, I am wondering if others are seeing this too and what can be done to
address this issue.

I don’t believe the MAC address is passed in a TCP/IP request, this is used by
the networking (switches routers) layer only.
Passing MAC addresses around the internet seems like it could lead to people
spoofing other people’s machines easily, so that’s probably why it isn’t done.

does Netbeans let you “bundle install” (My IDE of choice, RubyMine does this)
If so, do a bundle install both on the command line and also inside of Netbeans
and make sure they run smoothly with no hiccups

You definitely have run into a snag with Asset Pipeline. It can be a little
tricky if you aren't familiar with it, and you should be sure to rule out
caching issues.
here's how:
1) If you have compiled assets (you ran rake asset:compile), your Rails app
will serve the compiled assets
Debug the code directly using debugger, binding or pry.
try this (assuming thing is your variable)
thing.save
You should see a message false telling you that the object wasn't saved
then type
thing.errors
and you should see what the validation errors are
