I added an entry in my hosts file and it did run a lot faster (use
to take 30 - 45 seconds, now done in just a few seconds), but still the
last debug line doesn't add the scanner. here is the debug output after

Hello. I have a new Canon Pixma MX925 on two OSs - Ubuntu 12.04 and
Ubuntu 14.04. Behavior of the scanner is the same on both. Some
functionality doesn't seem to be available. Some front ends don't work
at all [such as XSane], and some that do seem not to work fully. If

Chances are, you have two copies of sane installed, and the config
files for one of the copies are messed up. Try enabling debugging on
the the DLL backend, and see where it is trying to load files from:
SANE_DEBUG_DLL=255 scanimage -L

Ubuntu 14.04 still comes with backend version 1.0.23, which doesn't
support that scanner. You need to install the git version of sane.
