You need to set the permissions of the device file when it is created
by the OS. Different distros handle this in different ways, so I
cannot give you any Mint specific instructions. Generally, you will
look for udev or hal rules or hwdb files, and modify them. My distro
sets up permissions for

accounts of this on many scanners and many Distros. I have gone thru a
laundry list of changing ownership, permissions, etc. The problem is

That said, I just ran xsane and it found the scanner and scanned a document.
So it appears that getting the latest hplip, installing it and then
installing the printer in CUPS was enough.
Strange that hp-setup couldn't find it at all.

can display the PDF but spits out a lot of diagnostics on standard out
(or perhaps standard error).
If I scan the same document with the same scanner and with
simple-scan, the PDF elicits no warnings from evince.

I was running this software without any problems. However when I now open
the programme all of the various dialogue boxes seem to open but then all
but one disappear. How can I ensure that they remain open.

Sounds like a bug in XSane. I would suggest you contact it's author
