Hello everybody,
The TCP Idea Mill is churning today, and I'd like your input :)
Some people in the community have talked about wanting a tech comm
wiki, and we're considering putting one on the TCP website.
* What do you think of the idea?
* How/for what would you use it?
* Would you use it
Hi everyone,
It is every poster's responsibility to make sure the content of the TCP
list remains professional. You should never make comments that would be
offensive in a typical business situation. In particular, sexual, racial,
and political comments, and profanity (whether overt or disguised
So, where are you at in your technical communication career? Are you in
management? If so, are you happy being a manager? If not, would you like
to be a manager? Is that one of your career goals?
I am not a manager, and while I wouldn't turn it down if the opportunity
presented itself, managing
Hi everyone,
I'm on Windows XP using:
* IPA 8.1
* FrameMaker 7.0 p579
* PhotoShop 9.0.2
* Corel PhotoPaint 8.369
* Acrobat Distiller 7.0.7
* Acrobat Professional 7.0.8
I have found a new use for IPA, the I3D software I've been using to
animate 3D CAD files. I can also save static images and put
Thanks for all the advice and comments about graphics clarity and size. I
ran some tests based on the information, and decided to use tifs converted
to gifs. I also figured out why the gifs wouldn't work before--I made the
original tifs very large to improve the crispness of the lines, but hadn't
1) You are using relative pathing, correct, where all files live withn
the same folder structure and not out on some network drive.
This is hard for me to answer. I didn't create this file--it was done by a
contractor who filled in while I was on leave taking care of my dad last
spring. I had
Hi Carol,
I do something similar when working with our regular translation vendors.
I've been doing the translation coordination for 8 years, and didn't send
anything like that at first--you can imagine how many problems that led
to! Over the first few years, I made a checklist for myself and an
I have a question for those of you who have used the Archive utility for
FrameMaker. It says that it has a limitation of not archiving OLE objects
included in documents. There are a number of these in my documents, and
while I would like to phase those out if I get the utility, but I won't be

As the I3D (interactive 3D documentation) project continues to grow
and change, we've realized that our customers will need to have some
training in how to use it, so they can make the most of it. We have a

Hello everyone,
Tomorrow, I send my manager on his way with an updated copy of the I3D
presentation I made for the sales manager a couple of weeks ago, which
he will show at our company's service conference in Georgia next week.
I would have liked to make the presentation myself, but the budget
Oh, how funny!
That makes me wonder, how many of you have less-than-adequate
equipment for your jobs? I have everything I need here, but on my
first tech writing job, I continually had to wait for the computer to
catch up with what I'd typed or clicked.
What kind of process do you have to go
Good day, everyone!
As promised, the notes, resources, and Why I Like Being a Tech

class at the local community college are now on the TCP website. :) I
hope they will help you if you someday have the opportunity to make a

This time, we have the URLs and a couple of typo corrections. :)

Hey everyone,
Please do keep the off-topic banter off-list. I don't say this because
I don't like to have fun but because I understand that poor
signal-to-noise ratios on an email list cause problems. That, I
believe, is what sets TCP apart from other online resources.
I'm glad to see new people
I don't know of any offhand, but I have a couple ideas.
* Do a search on www.youtube.com
* Talk to the faculty or students in the film department of your local
university. If they haven't done something like this, they might be
willing to do it for a project.

Hi everyone,
I'm sure what I need to do is simple, but I can't remember how to do
it, and can't seem to find it in the help. I want to change all the
Fig Ref cross references to another cross reference format. What is
the simplest way to do that? I'm using FM 7.0p579 on Windows XP.
Thanks!
Lisa
Hi Carla,
I did this in a manual a few months ago, and I numbered the examples for the
same reason you mentioned: if tech support needed to help a customer, they
could refer them to an example number rather than trying to explain which
one they were talking about.
