I generally use the phrase placeholder when discussing autonumbering, and

They are used when multiple autonumbers exist in a string.

Example:
You have a TableTitle paragraph format that displays as Table 4-2.
It uses the following autonumber string: Table $chapnum- n+

In the example, the is the placeholder, which might represent the
autonumber value of figures. Since you want to leave the figure value
unchanged, you must tell FM to ignore it. The common description for that
 is placeholder.

The FrameMaker 9.0 User Guide refers to auto-numbering building blocks
as counters. It's been the term used going back many FrameMaker
releases.

Re: [TCP] placeholders

2010-01-07 Thread Peter Gold
Hi, Matt:

From the FrameMaker 9.0 User Guide, page 50:

The counter in the Head2 format keeps the value of the first
counter the same but doesn’t display it. If the
counter is not in that position, the A+ in the Head2 format refers
to the first counter (not the second), and
FrameMaker produces [incorrect results].

Interestingly, on page 51, the table for Japanese numbering options,
Building block is the heading for the column that contains
constructs like zenkaku n (meaning Fixed-width Arabic numbers.)

It's a good example why it's important to observe a doc set's style
guide diligently, if there is one, and to have one if there isn't one.

Peter
