Here is my setup:
tomcat: 3.3a
mod_jk: 3.3a
Sun JDK: 1.1.8v1
IBM JDK: 1.1.8
OS: Debian
perspective but I couldn't find much that's client-related.

the JSSE jars into $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/ext, but I'd like to
understand why this would be required...
