I have found that the presence of the counterpart "utilities-
terminal.png" icons under /usr/share/icons/gnome fixes the use of the
Humanity one (even though the ones under the "gnome" folder are unused),

it doesn't crash, it hangs, with xorg stuck at 100% cpu, and no there's
nothing in /var/crash
it does seem to be a new issue, tho as i said, i don't watch all that
much really.

Thank you for getting back to me. I am sorry for taking up your time
because I now think this problem may have been due to a faulty hard drive.
Since I replaced that drive with a much newer 1Tb drive about a month
ago, reinstalling Ubuntu, this problem has not recurred.

fetchmail integrates with resolvconf via /etc/resolvconf/update-
libc.d/fetchmail; I think this warrants another look.
