tea for one, I suspect that this issue was fixed when LP: #1686257 was
fixed this week. Could you install all updates and see if GDM works for
you now?
Victor, it sounds like you are affected by LP: #1559576 The workaround
for that bug is to install xserver-xorg-legacy

I have actually used Ubuntu 16.10, installed using ubuntu-gnome-desktop*
and ran into the same issue.
My configuration however is a bit more complex, as I have 2 NVIDIA GTX
970 FTW with the latest nvidia drivers from ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa
(which I could only get running after also enabling

Yes, I did install gnome-shell manually via synaptic, I have done this
at least half a dozen times with vanilla Ubuntu (inc Unity) 12.04 and
14.04.
Previously, I have never encountered a problem.

There doesnt seem anything useful in that Log, can you uncomment the
debug line in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf and get the journal log again.
