I followed the exact advise to fix my own problems with my microphone
using either skype or MSN.
It fixed the problems momentarily. I left my computer on overnight and
have not restarted it. I did close Skype and aMSN and started both upon
waking up. Again, I have no microphone functionality
Since this bug appears to be fixed, it's being closed.

I have Ubuntu (Studio) 8.10 + external mic and after infamous update my
mic stopped working. My audio controller is nVidia Corporation CK804
AC'97 Audio Controller (rev a2).
I have tried the following suggestions:
+ * killing pulseaudio
* remove pulseaudio,
*PHIUF!*
This is how I managed to solve this problem..
- installed gnome-alsamixer (sudo apt-get install gnome-alsamixer)
Then checked that out (gnome-alsamixer) and there the Capture setting
was okey - So I went to volume control and changed device from NVidia
to Realtek ALC658D (OSS Mixer).
Gee, I knew it wasn't that easy. Now my sound volume is very very very
very low if audible...
