I just did a fresh reinstall of Xubuntu 10.10 RC, and yes the problem is
that 'xfsettingsd' is not running for some reason. You can fix this by
adding 'xfsettingsd' to your Application Autostart group in the xfce 4

Nvidia Quadro 140M NVS, Maverick RC and 260.19.06-0ubuntu1 installed and
I'm still seeing poor system performance (eg. scrolling or running a
verbose script in gnome-terminal eats one of the cores of my CPU).

Disable special CPU/motherboard/IO services. I mean: append kernel parameters

I hit this issue today, installed x11-common by hand to get the latest
version (sudo apt-get install x11-common), now my upgrades is on its way
again.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.4 (Lucid) and I had this problem with getting a
black screen when switching users also.
Following Igor's advice fixed it for me.

when i get home, ill try to boot with an xorg.conf that doesnt use
nvidia driver, but i think ive done that last night and the described
problem stayed the same but im not sure so ill try.. if theres some
output you need please tell me soon before ill format again and switch
back to 10.04

The Ati's hotfix worked for me too, but I had to generate and use the packages
for Ubuntu/lucid too. With the generated packages I run
ati-driver-installer-8.771.2-x86.x86_64.run and installed it normally. After
the installation finished I installed the generated packages in the following

screens I drag my Firefox window. The worst corruption is far right.
