Damien,
Thanks for the info. I did experiment with frames but nothing worked.
What do you all mean be a partner with Youtube? Is it being a Youtube
employee or a preferred videoposter? What is it? And how do you become one?
Just curious :)
Thanks.

Hi Guys,
There is a lot of out dated information in this string. Here are the facts, as
of February 2010.
1. You need to be a Youtube Partner to get access to customizable (upload your
own) thumbnails.
2. YouTube used to pull it's thumbnails from preset points in the video

Thanks everyone for replying to my message. Yes, I figured there's no way to
get my own thumbnail frame besides the 3 offered by Youtube.
Kevin, what do you mean by inserting the poster frame in the middle of a
timeline? You mean it's not hidden anyhow? I can't imagine putting a certain

For me it's not big of a deal that the thumbnail frames are not perfect, but
since the client wants this video embedded into his website, he'd like to have
a better front frame than Youtube currently gives. I'll try different

That's one of the many reasons I still prefer Blip and Vimeo over YouTube.
Both Blip and Vimeo allow you to upload a custom thumbnail, and Vimeo even
gives you the option to choose a thumbnail from 12 clips. Maybe in a future
version YouTube will allow more thumbnail options. Until then, we're
As a workaround, the trick I've seen involves inserting the poster
frame right smack in the middle of your video clip's timeline, so
Youtube picks it up as the video thumbnail.
I'd love to see how others creatively workaround Youtube's mechanism.

Aside from the options already mentioned in this thread, if you click on Edit
Video you will notice that YouTube has selected 3 possible thumbnails for you
to use. The default is the middle screenshot, but you can use any of the 3.
Just be warned that it'll take some time for it to take effect.
