CULTURAL QA 04-2025-22

Very interesting simple QA from Quoradigest- compiled

Q1              IfBhishma and Dronacharya were punished with death in the
Mahabharata War forremaining silent during the disrobing of Draupadi, what
punishment didYudhisthir get for staking his own wife Draupadi in the game of
dice?

A1              LakshmiTelidevara, Studying Vyasa Bharat again and again.6y

No one is beyond justice.Everyone has to endure punishment in this birth or in
the next birth. Yudhishtirgot his due in that birth itself.

He lost his son who would have continued his lineage.Prativindhya died at the
end of the war. He was not married by then. So Yudhishtiradid not have the good
fortune of having his grandson at least to succeed him.

Yudhisthira had to satisfy with his brother’s grandsonParikshit ,inherit the
throne of Hastinapur.

Yes .Abhimanyu was the beloved of all the Pandavas but History won’t record the
legacy of Yudhishtir .That certainly was apunishment in true sense.

Thirteen years He and his family suffered in exile andincognito. His mother had
to take shelter in Vidura’s house. It definitely wasa punishment since the duty
of a son was to take care of the mother and serveher in person. Yudhisthira
lost that opportunity.A punishment indeed for theEldest son.

At the end of the war,Yudhisthira lost his mental peace overthe loss of his
relatives and sons .

Not only that he lost his Elder brother Karna ,whoserevelation by Kunti,
shattered him from the bottom of his heart. For, it wasYudhisthira who
celebrated Karna’s death more than any one of his brothers . Heeven went to see
his dead body and rejoiced. Now his doing must have hauntedhim throughout his
life. A punishment indeed .

Yudhisthira had to endure the death of his mother who wasburnt in forest fire.
Again a heart break for him.

On the whole We can definitely come to conclusion thatYudhisthira did suffer in
his life for what he did to Draupadi. But     Repentance saves a person and
redeems himof his sin.

Yudhisthira repented and washed his sins by visiting tirthas, sacred
places….That is why he still got his due as the emperor of Aryavartawho
performed sacrifices and ruled the kingdom for thirty six years.

Everyone got thepunishment for making Draupadi endure what she did in Dice
hall. No one is anexception.

Arjuna lost his dearest son Abhimanyu while he, the fatherwas the greatest
warrior who could not come to his son’s rescue. Lifelong helived with the pain.
That was his punishment for not being able to saveDraupadi who was his
responsibility more than others.

Hence equal justice to all those who were involved in  Draupadi’s humiliation.
No one was spared.

Q2              How doextremely old people just drop dead if they don't catch a
disease?

A2              C.S.Friedman, Novelist for 35 Years2y

In the book “How we Die” (which is so depressing I don't recommend reading
it)the author says that “no one dies of old age”. We die from things that
aregoing wrong inside an older body. Cancer, heart disease, hardening of
thearteries, gradual organ degenrreration, thee are a hundred things that start
togo wrong or break down over time, and eventually they happen to all of
us.Whena very old person dies and an autopsy is performed, many of those
conditionsare discovered, that the person may never even have known about. The
questionis which one was the first to get bad enough to cause death.

I know this was true of a friend of mine, whose elderly daddied just after I
had read the book. He was quite active into his late years, and worked right up
until the end, but when he died of heart trouble and theydid an autopsy they
found all sorts of health issues no one had known about, including cancer in few
places.

After decades of accumulating conditions that place stressupon the body, it
finally gives out. Or it catches a disease and lacks thestrength to pull
through. One's immune system declines with age. Pneumonia is amajor killer of
old people.

Q3              Is ittrue that when you use an airplane toilet, your waste goes
straight overboardand into the air? Is there a risk that it could land on
someone and causecontamination?

A3              AneesMalik, Mar 30

On a long-haul 747 flight, each passenger uses the toilet anaverage of 2.4
times, producing 870 litres of waste - roughly the volume of afour-person
Jacuzzi.

There is so much unwanted material,  it would take miraculous engineering
toprocess it all. This is where the flush function of airplane toilets comes
inhandy.

Currently, these toilets do not work with traditional siphonsand water.

As early as 1982, airplanes began installing newtoilets with non-stickbowls
that used a blue substance called Skychem instead of water, and powerful
vacuumsuction devices that left almost nothing in the bowl.

Skykem helps eliminateodors and sanitize the toilet bowl. Additionally, vacuum
toilets use much less water thansiphon toilets, are much lighter, and can be
installed in a variety of ways, making them more fuel- and space-efficient - two
very important factors on anairplane.

When you flush, a trapdoor at the bottom of the toilet opens and the Skykem
liquid fills the bowl. The loud noise you hear whenflushing is not the trap
door opening out as many people think. It's simply thesound of a vacuum
suction, like a large vacuum cleaner.

Waste is sucked in through the toilet hole and travelsthrough pipes to the rear
of the plane, where it ends up in a tank that can only be accessed fromoutside
the plane. Pilots can't empty this tank in flight even if they wantedto.

When the plane lands on the ground, the tanks are emptiedby a special tanker
truck, which attaches a hose to the plane and vacuums upthe waste. Once the
plane's tanks are empty, they are cleaned with adisinfectant.

However, there havebeen many incidents in the past where waste from airplane
toilets has fallenfrom the sky and landed on houses.

This was a commonissue in the 60s and 70swhen airplane toilet pipes weren't
properly sealed, causing leaks. Urine andwaste would mix with the Skykem and
leak out of the pipes, usually onto theoutside of the plane near the rear
landing gear. When this liquid comes into contact with the cold air athigh
altitudes it turns into blue ice .

As the plane descended toland, the ice began to melt, falling off the plane and
eventually onto the roofof a house. In 1971, a hugeblock of blue ice fell on a
building in London, blowing a hole in the roof.

There have been several instances of this kind of incidentaround the world in
older aircraft over the past few decades. Although it isnow very rare, it does
happen from time to time.

Has a plane ever intentionally dumped waste while inflight?

The answer is yes. In the early days of civil aviationin the 1930s,aircraft
such as the British Stranraer and Short Sunderland had toilets that opened to
the outside.Anything that fell into the bowl was dumped outside.

However, as time passed and commercial air travel increased, this practice was
soon phased out.

My note- As boys many of us believed that toilet waste was emptied while
crossing sea/large water body. Physics about their  ice block formation in the
heights never camein our mind.

Q4              Arethere any animals other than humans that are as vengeful?

A4              AneesMalik, Apr 6

"An African hunter found a young elephant that hadfallen into a pit and with
great difficulty rescued it.

Years later, when the hunter is now an old man, he visits acircus in New York
City, where he finds an elephant parade and the one herescued.

The hunter had almost forgotten the incident, but theelephant did not, and in a
moment ran over to where his former saviour wassitting, lifted him up by his
trunk, and lowered him into a more comfortableseat.

I also read a story once about a zookeeper who was suddenlycrushed by an
elephant, only to discover later that the elephant had once beenphysically
abused and bullied by the same human.

Of course, if such stories were true, revenge might well havebeen exacted
whenever someone harmed an elephant. And that's exactly whathappened.

Here are some facts about elephant memory:

Elephants have incredible memories, storing up social andecological knowledge
and remembering the smells and voices of many people andplaces over decades.

Mirror self-recognition suggests that elephants areself-aware, and many
observations, including empathic behaviour, suggest thatelephants have a
rudimentary theory of mind.

Elephants have incredible memories, intelligence and socialskills, but, like
humans, these traits make them especially vulnerable tostress, trauma and its
long-term psychological effects.

Elephants have extremelylarge and complex brains. At an average weight of 4.8
kg, elephants have the largest brains of any livingor extinct land mammal. They
have the largest volume of the cerebral cortexavailable for cognitive
processing of any land mammal. In 2006, an increase inattacks on humans by
African elephants led scientists to wonder if the animalswere taking revenge.

It is thought that many of the elephants may havepost-traumatic stress disorder
as a result of poaching in the 1970s and 1980s.

So next time you think about bothering an elephant, thinkagain. The elephant
mightremember, and would remember.

Q5              Why isgoddess Lakshmi related with broom?

A5              VijaySingh, Jan 24

Broom is considered a symbol of Goddess Lakshmi. Broom cleansthe house and
brings positive energy, so it is considered a symbol of Lakshmi. It is said that
where there is cleanliness, Goddess Lakshmi resides there.

Some special thingsrelated to broom and Goddess Lakshmi:

Broom is considered a form of Lakshmi.    Broom is considered auspicious to buy
abroom on Dhanteras.    Broom removespoverty from the house and brings positive
energy.    Putting feet on broom disrespects Mahalakshmi.

Broom should always be kept clean.    Broom should not be used in the
eveningafter sunset.Broomshould not be kept outside the house or on the roof.

Friday and Tuesday are considered the best days to buy abroom.

Broom is always consideredmore auspicious to buy a broom in pairs.

My note- A few of us atleast consider broom as Alekshmi and keep in hidden
places. While elders prefer lengthy brooms, workersprefer worn out brooms for
better cleaning of compound, terrace etc. Hence we keep somewhat  worn out
brooms also.

Not knowing these details, however I use to purchase always palm leaf brooms 2
nosand coconut brooms 4-5 numbers(difficulty to get one when wanted urgently).

I keep one good coconut and one good  palm leaf in work area of kitchen. One
coconutbroom near bathroom. However I keep good looking quality broom inside
home andothers new in outside almirah. There can be different thinkings that
broom isalekshmi and keep in corner and wornout brooms are to be thrown out.
