Doug has made significant contributions to the Java 2D text APIs
and their implementation starting in 1997 and in every release from
JDK 1.2
up to and including JDK 6. As part of the Taligent (later IBM) team

java.awt.font package, and as part of the ICU team directly handled
integrating bidi text and ICU opentype layout in JDK.
Doug has also been a JavaOne speaker on the JDK's text APIs
and implementation.
