Went to the Notting Hill Arts Club on Monday evening
to check out what Christian Vogel is up to these days.

He didn't pitch up. Arse....

Chicks on Speed and the Rough Trade DJ collective were
on the same bill.

The CoS wear home made foundation year art student
outfits, project a few scatty slides, jump up and down
and shout a lot over a vaguely tekno DAT backing tape
which starts off as a bit Hip Hop flavoured and ends
about 45 mins later with a thrash punk attitude.

They were clearly anxious, edging on stage in dribs
and drabs very late, gave the sound engineer, and
punters at the front eardrums, a 10 minute nightmare
by fiddling nervously with the mixer settings and left
at the end visibly distressed. Audience response
generally positive but muted.

To be fair some of the lyrics are very sharp and
witty, and when the did get the timing right there was
a punky energy and some arty flair on display. File
under : 'pink folks still can't rap much but 3 girls
from Munich merit points for giving it a go'. Has
potential but far from a finished article.

Stars of the evening were the Rough Trade boys. I came
in to the bluegrass strains of 'Froggy went a
Courting' followed in quick succession by 'My Old
Man's a Dustman', Suzi Quattro's 'Devil Gate Drive',
Chuck Berry's 'Route 66' and a old Ska track I didn't
recognise. I admitted 'spotters defeat after
this.....and concentrated on laughing, dancing,
wallowing in warm nostagia, exclaiming in disbelief
and marvelling that it was possible to play classic
tunes from 40 years of pop so that as each tune ended
you thought 'That songs *still* brill, how can they
top that?' Except they nearly always did........
...&...
.....two hours later they had got round to a mix of
indie guitar, Hip Hop and Techno..... ;-0/

Eclectisism at it's best and the most I have enjoyed
DJz playing back to back ever.

Er? Still haven't been able to help with the CoS
tech-house track id thougth....
