Thought I would just preview a couple of records that may be (indirectly) of interest to 313-ers.
Speedy J: A Shocking Hobby (Novamute) Just got this today. I am not overly familiar with Speedy's previous work but he seems to be one of those folks newly enamoured with 'The Breakbeat''. This album has a mix of experimental and dancefloor tracks and is, I suspect, a grower. I think I preferred Luke Slater's Wireless, an album that I felt was underrated, and even misconstrued, within 'techno' circles. DJ Q: TwentyFour7even (Filter) This is a quality 'tech-house' album that features the single Optimum Thinking. DJ Q has won respect from the likes of Carl Craig and Derrick Carter and that's understandable. One of the tracks is actually a dedication to Carter. There's a classic Detroit influence on a handful of tracks, Way Back Then and The End Of The Beginning. I would say that this is a worthwhile record but not outstanding in the way that Laurent's is. But then, to be fair, Laurent has been at it a whole lot longer. In other news: I'm told that Planet E's catalogue is now getting distribution through Siren in Australia and that the People Make The World Go 'Round single should be out about now. So, um, that's fabulous. Also there's a Giorgio Moroder 'tribute' coming out with remixes. On the good side Felix The Housekat, Roger Sanchez and Danny Tenaglia contribute, on the bad there's Paul Oakenfold and a bunch of wack German trance producers (ie. no one good like DJ Hell or Ian Pooley). The track list is at least novel; I wish I had a copy, someone read it out to me on the phone. I just think it's a shame (obviously) that there aren't any 313 cats on there. C
