Actually there is currently a fairly strong distinction (Stateside, anyway) between that music and hard house. Hard house is much more loopy and 4-4, and definitely less complex. It is closer to tech-house than to trance/hard trance/acid trance. Derrick Carter plays techy and hard when he comes to Detroit, and it always upsets me because elsewhere he plays much more upbeat and eclectic.
