> Second: does anyone know of any good books about techno in particular, or
> electronic music in general?

Any books on Herbie
> Hancock or Miles Davis about the "Bitches Brew" period?

I have "miles' diary" but it is really just photos and record reviews, I
know there is a miles biography that is meant to be good but i can't
remember it's name (check amazon or something)

miles: the autobiography (with quincy trope)

i just read this a couple weeks ago, and highly recommend it. autobiographies aren't always fascinating, i think for 2 reasons: 1 - the subject/author is often talented or famous for a reason other than writing ability 2 - the subject/author 'edits' his or her life to present it in a positive light

but the davis/trope collaboration is engagingly written (swear words included) & miles seems to have no fear of exposing his flaws. this book will blow you away, especially in his finely detailed retelling of the earlier years. he talks about every jazz musician you've ever admired & many you never heard of but will now rush out & buy their stuff. parker coltrane evans hancock jamal gillepsie roach -even prince. really illustrates the progressions these guys made off of each session - from bebop to cool to fusion to electronic.

only complaint is that the last five or so chapters are a bit less interesting - you kind of feel like he got a bit bored with the whole autobiography process.
